1 Newsletter No. 40 - Term 4 Week 10 14 December 2017 From the Principal…………. CAROLS EVENING What a fabulous family night! On Tuesday we held our Carols evening at school and nearly all the Kalinda community was there, including some of our future families, to share the wonderful weather, the sausage sizzle run by our hardworking members of Parents & Friends, and the excellent renditions of Christmas songs, sung by all the teachers and students. The Highland Dancers, as always, were a highlight of the night. Thank you so much to Paul Todd and Cheryl Henry-Wild for their tireless work with the students. A big thank you to Chris Mann for his wonderful support as our Sound Man. Everyone was so enthusiastic, even turning up early to get a good viewing spot, right through to the end of the program, and still enjoying themselves after dark on the way home! SAD TO SEE YOU GO! Every year we have movement amongst our teaching staff. This year we will be saying farewell to Karen Johns, Steve Harvey and Mitchell Peacock. It will be extremely sad to say goodbye to Karen Johns. Karen has been here for 17 years and has worked hard in, not only her grade, but within the school community as well. She has been extremely supportive to hundreds of children who have passed through her care. I know Karen will be very sad to leave us, but she has secured an exciting position at Clyde North Primary School as Science Coordinator. Karen will be setting up a brand new Science room and formulating a Science curriculum for a large school. As well as this appointment, Karen has also been accepted as part of a team of the world’s leading female scientists and researchers to conduct research in the Antarctic. The team, known as Homeward Bound, is a ground-breaking leadership, strategic and science initiative for women, set against the backdrop of Antarctica. The vision of Homeward Bound is to equip a 1000-strong global collaboration of women with a science background to lead, influence and contribute to policy and decision making as it informs the future of our planet within 10 years. We congratulate Karen on this appointment and achievement and hope to hear of all her adventures in Antarctica. Steve Harvey has been with us for seven years as our Physical Education Teacher and our Facilities Manager. I congratulate Steve who has secured an Assistant Principal position at Birmingham Primary School. Steve has been a wonderful asset to our school in many other ways, other than the two I have just mentioned. He has been a great support for all our staff and has kept his professionalism through some trying times. Steve accompanied a group to India and brought back our game of Kubbity, which the children very much enjoy. As Facilities Manager, Steve has worked tirelessly within our Masterplan to incorporate the changes in our beautiful facilities. Lyse Carlson is also leaving us for a year. Thank you for all you have done for your students over the last 13 years, and we wish you all the very best in your future endeavours. One of our Integration Aides, Sue Crowe, is also leaving us and we thank her for her work in our Integration Program where she has supported many of our children. Mitchell Peacock has been here for a few months and we wish him all the very best for the future.

Monday 1st

– Friday 15th

December

The Junior School Council Representatives, on behalf of Doncare, would like to thank everyone for donating all the wonderful toys and books to

our Wishing Tree this year. There are many families who will have a happier Christmas

because of you!

Thank you very much from the 2017 JSC Reps & Doncare and Merry Christmas to all families.

Kalinda String Group Concert In the afternoon of Friday 8th December the Kalinda String Group presented a wonderful concert of repertoire, ranging from favourites from the year (Click Go the Shears), to perennial favourites (Dindy’s Spring Tide, Wilson’s Promontory), to solos, duets, quartets and an array of Christmas Songs, some from hundreds of years ago and others from more recent times, from In Dulci Jubilo to We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The captivated audience of schoolchildren and family members sung and clapped with furore. A hearty congratulations to violinists Colin, Karli, Lanna, Jaylen, Jason, and cellists Hayden and Taya. A job well done! Thank you too to parents for helping to set up and pack up the concert.

Welcome to Gene Holland Holly Caldwell will be leaving Kalinda Primary School at the end of 2017. She has accepted a Master of Music (musicology) research position at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. There, she will be researching the important role that Australian classical composers play in shaping youth perspectives in terms of understanding of culture, identity and place. She has very much enjoyed working with the strings and piano students at Kalinda over the past 10 years, developing the Kalinda String Group and undertaking many projects, including co-directing the Mullum Mullum: Morning, Noon, Night collaborative project with Monash University in 2013, the strings workshop with visiting German composer Jobst Liebrecht in 2015, and the regional tour to Lake Bolac Eel Festival in the same year, as well as many more. Holly is pleased to announce that Gene Holland will be continuing in her place as piano teacher and ensemble director. Gene Holland is a composer, improviser, pianist, trombonist and educator. He graduated from an Honours Degree in Composition at Monash University in 2015. Gene participated in several projects with young students throughout his degree, including writing for and leading rehearsals for Norwood Secondary College Concert Band, and collaborating with kids at Kalinda Primary School to jointly write a piece about the Mullum Mullum Reserve. Gene currently works with In Helvetica, a dance and theatre trio who create original shows for kids. As an instrumental teacher Gene sees instilling a passion for and skills in music as one of the most valuable contributions he can make in people’s lives. Having played a variety of brass instruments and specializing in trombone, Gene is also able to teach beginner to intermediate brass. Gene will be joining Kalinda in 2018. For more information, please contact Gene on 0412 772 657 or at [email protected] ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Gene Holland (BMus Hons) Brief Biography Gene Holland is a composer, improviser, pianist, trombonist and educator based in Eastern Melbourne. He graduated from an Honours Degree in Composition at Monash University in 2015, in which his research project concerned ‘extramusical’ elements within group creation, an area he continues to pursue in his projects and performances. Gene participated in several projects with kids throughout his degree, including writing for and leading rehearsals for Norwood Secondary College Concert Band, and collaborating with kids at Kalinda Primary School to jointly write a piece about the Mullum Mullum Reserve. Gene devotes a significant amount of attention to engaging with and working with children and young people. He has been working since May 2016 with In Helvetica, a dance and theatre trio on creating an original kids show, My Brown Paper Clouds, which will be toured regionally and interstate into schools, community halls and fringe festivals. Between February 2016 and June 2017, Gene taught 12-14 piano students weekly at Wendy’s Music School in Diamond Creek, and also teaches privately. Having taught several piano methods for a while now, Gene is developing his own method and has been compiling his own exercises, worksheets and instructional CD’s. Gene sees instilling a passion for and skills in music as one of the most valuable contributions he can make in people’s lives. Having played a variety of brass instruments and specializing in trombone, Gene is also able to teach beginner to intermediate brass. As a composer, Gene regularly records and publishes his piano improvisations, and writes for various ensembles. He loves interacting with artists from other disciplines and reimagining his sound in different performance environments. He has been influenced by a wide array of Modern composers but has always retained a love for melody. The Kanawinka Volcanic Region has been of particular interest to him over the past year or two, and he has visited several times to discover more about the land and gather ideas.
