Newsletter A Note from Mrs Van Dyk’s Desk

Since our last newsletter many functions and events have taken place. The Music Carnival, Lady of Fatima Tour, Heritage Day and Arbor Day Celebra-tions, Bishop Bavin Speech Competition, St Dunstan’s Eisteddfod, Angel Mass , Gr 7 Farewell Dinner as well as many sporting and cultural activities . I thank every staff member, parent and pupil who helped in any way , to make all these events successful.

The following prayer was read at the angel Mass:

A Prayer for our earth (by Pope Francis) All-Powerful God , you are present in the whole universe

And in the smallest of your creatures.

You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.

Pour out upon us the power of your love ,

That we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace, that we may live

As brothers and sisters , harming no one.

O God of the poor,

Help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,

So precious in your eyes.

Bring healing to our lives,

That we may protect the world and not prey on it,

That we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.

Touch the hearts

Of those who look only for gain

At the expense of the poor and the earth.

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,

To be filled with awe and contemplation,

To recognize that we are profoundly united

With every creature

As we journey towards your infinite light.

Thank you for being with us each day.

Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle

For justice , love and peace

October 2016

As we reflect on this prayer let us remember to be thankful for our earth and to never be too busy to pray and strive for justice, love and peace within our school and the communi-ty around us!

On 28 September the St Dominic's Gr 4 girls participated in the Super sport let's play challenge. The aim is to see the amount of students that can get through an obstacle course in 45 minutes. The girls managed to get 74 through in 45 min. Unfortunately St Dominic's did not go through to the semi finals but however did make the top ten and first in the all girls school group. Well done to all the Gr 4 girls that took part in this fun event and well done to all of the girls.

The Junior School celebrated books during Book Week which was held from the 22 – 16 September. The week started off with a book character dress up and picnic. The girls looked wonderful and had creat-ed beautiful outfits from household items and a little imagination! Various reading activities prepared by the Grade 7 Media Committee were held in the Media Centre at break, including a birthday party quiz to celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday. Many girls came together to test their knowledge of Roald Dahl books. A competition to “Guess how many books are in the Media Centre” was won by Geneiva Ackerman from Grade 6G, well done! Her guess was only 52 books short of the actual number of books.

The Readers Warehouse book sale was enthusiasti-cally supported and many girls left the book shop with lots of reading material. Thank you to Ms de la Hunt for arranging them.

The Book Week ended with a performance by Hooked on Books, which is always very popular with the girls due to the actors’ antics on stage. This year they included books across a wide variety of genres. Ad-venture books such as My Brother is a Superhero and The 13-Storey Treehouse to books on poetry such as Poetry Pie.

All the books presented by Hooked on Books are available in the Media Centre along with many excit-ing adventures waiting to be started. Keep reading!

Hooked on Books On Friday 16th September, the Grade 0 – 3 girls were treated to a perfor-mance by Hooked on Books in our Jubilee Centre. The performers present-ed excerpts from six children’s books, stopping at crucial points in the sto-ry, motivating our girls to go out and find these books to read to see how the stories will end.

The books presented were:

Geronimo Stilton’s Treasure of Easter Island. This is a funny “whisker licking good” tale of Geronimo the mouse’s adventures as he goes off on Wild Willy’s plane to find his sister Thea, and the treasure on Easter Island.

The Step Monster. A story about Tom whose mother, Flying Freda, has gone off to join the circus. Tom’s father has met a young lady who he wants to introduce to Tom. All Tom knows about step mothers, he has learned from fairy tales and he is afraid that this lady will become his “step-monster.”

Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants. King Collin has a pair of gold-en underpants. These underpants are stolen by a giant and Sir Scal-lywag, who is six years old, has to get them back.

Poetry Pie. This is a collection of “delicious” poems by Roger McGoush. Cinderboy. This is a story loosely based on the fairytale of Cinderella.

Cinderboy loves soccer. When his step family refuses to take him with to watch Royal Palace United play in the final, his TV godmoth-er arranges to get him to the match, warning him to be back before the final whistle.

Explosive Adventures. This book contains two stories. The one which was presented was The Bubblegum Tree. This book follows the ad-ventures of Billy as he flies to India to find the Bubblegum Tree.

This was the perfect way to end our book week. Our girls are encouraged to look for these books in our Media Centre or to go to www.hookedonbooks.org.za to find out where they can get hold of these books.

Angel Mass

Our annual Mass of the Archangels is the final Mass which the matrics attend with the whole school before their own Valedictory Mass and the start of their final exams.

The matric girls and Grade Ones walked in procession in front of Fr Mark James, who cele-brated this special Mass for us.

The theme of caring for and stewardship of the earth, inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laud-ato Si’ was evident in the posters made by all classes and displayed behind the altar.

The Archangels, Mi-chael, Gabriel and Raph-ael were brought up at the Offertory by the Grade Fives.

Thank you to all those girls who brought in non-perishable goods.

Angels before you, guide and direct you

Angels behind you, guard and protect you

Angels above you, keep watching over you

Angels beside you, care for and comfort you.

Learn to Cook General Information The cookery courses last for six weeks and are run in the afternoons and evenings, Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays in the form of 2-hour work sessions which are “hands on” classes.

Two classes will also be available on Saturdays 9-11am or 11.15 -13:15

Only 12 students can be accommodated in each course.

Basic cookery will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Saturday mornings. (a variety of main meals) and baking will take place on Wednesday. However, depend-ing on demand I may have to alter this schedule to accommodate clients. Evening classes will only be available if numbers are suitable.

It is school policy that girls and boys who are studying Consumer Studies as one of their elective subject choices in Grade 10/11 or 12 are not eligible for the courses; however, children are welcome from Grade 5 upwards.

The new sessions will begin on Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st, Thursday 22nd and Saturday 24th

of September and continue until 25th October 2016.

Another set of classes will begin on Tuesday 1st November, continuing until 6th December.

Work sessions begin promptly at 14:30 in the afternoon and 17:30 in the early evening. It is important to arrive 10 minutes before starting time.

Venue:

The venue is the Cookery Centre in the Senior School. Please use the Kruger Street gate. Secure parking in the visitors’ carpark is available.

Attendance:

A certificate of participation will be issued on completion of the course. However, students who miss more than two sessions will not qualify for the certificate.

Absence:

Please advise Mrs. Lithgow of absence via the school office or by email.

It may be possible to make up a lesson but this is not guaranteed.

Certificates:

As this is a course of practical sessions, please note that individual enthusiasm and participation are essential for success.

As with any practical course, mistakes will and do occur, some meals do not always turn out well at home. This is all part of the learning process, bear in mind practice makes perfect. Success does not always happen at the first attempt.

Everyone is attending the course to LEARN TO COOK!
