SYNDICATE NEWS

Senior News - In Mathematics, the senior classes have been busy learning about multiplication and division, learning new strategies for solving problems and practising their basic facts.

In spelling, all classes have identified an opportunity to develop more ‘word power’. We have started a syndicate programme of meeting a new and challenging word each day. Through these we have been practising our steps in learning how to spell, including syllabification, looking at word shape, identifying the tricky bits and prefix/suffix combinations. We are also enjoying finding out what these words mean.

All classes are busy developing their ideas and processes to create a movie. This is involving drama, language, technology and music. This is proving to be a highly stimulating, creative and rewarding process.

Middle NewsChildren in the middle syndicate have been using SOLO Taxonomy as a tool to help them better understand the learning process. SOLO can be used to create learning steps for virtually anything and help children to identify the next steps, as well as to aspire to improved learning outcomes. You may hear children talking about the different levels used and what they mean for their learning. One of the important ideas that we have been talking about is that it takes effort to get better at something new – it is not due to luck! More information about SOLO Taxonomy can be found on the HookED website www.pamhook.com

Character descriptions are our current focus for writing. We have begun by focusing specifically on physical descriptions, and are on the lookout for techniques authors use to describe characters. We will move onto describing other aspects of the character. You can expect children to come home with their writer’s notebook to jot down ideas about somebody that they have loved, respected, admired, been fascinated by, or inspired by. We look forward to sharing their work with you.

Starting next week, our fitness programme will involve us doing lots of step running as we work towards climbing the equivalent distance that Sir Edmund Hillary climbed when reaching the summit of Mt Everest.

The Middle Syndicate has been working hard on Mathletics and achieving certificates each week. Due to this success, we are considering a free trial run of Reading Eggs this term, which is run by the same company as Mathletics.

Junior NewsWe are on our way to being moviemakers and each class is plotting and planning their part in the whole school movie. This is our main topic focus this term as we ASPIRE to become movie stars. PMP finishes next week due to the squash court arriving for whole school use in the hall. Also Rooms 11,10 and 9 are off to gymnastics for the next few weeks. Room 8 and 12 are off to Redroofs on Tuesday afternoon so Monday will be our last PMP day for this term. We will let you know if there is a space for it again at the end of the term. Thank you to the super team of parents who have come along to help each week. Fun Friday has one more week to go. A big thank you to the parents and grandparents who have supported our Friday afternoons. Your support is vital to the success of this programme. We will let you know the dates for Term 3 later in the term.A huge thank you to the 48 dedicated parents who turned up on a dark, cold Dunedin evening to attend the Junior Reading Talk. If you were unable to attend and wanted any handouts then please see your class teacher. With all the coughs and colds of winter please keep your child home if you suspect they have a temperature or are unwell. In any classroom it is difficult to stop the spread of germs and sick children cannot focus. Warm hats and coats are necessary for these chilly winter days so we can play outside if it is fine. Our next Kaikorai Kiwis afternoon is next Wednesday. Any 4 year olds intending to come to Kaikorai in 2013 or 2014 are welcome to come along.Come on in and see our new kidney shaped teaching tables we are all thrilled to have this wonderful new resource.

SCHOOL NEWS

Winter WeatherThe recent cold weather and snow has caught us all a little by surprise. Unless we have an extreme event specific to Kaikorai Primary School we will follow the general school postponements and closures released by the Otago Primary Principal’s Association. These are regularly announced on Classic Hits (89.4FM) and More FM (97.4FM).Once the decision has been made to postpone or cancel we will send out a push notification via smart phones, email and update the school website. If you hear nothing then you can assume school is open as normal.

Our new phone system once installed will also have up to date information on it relating to school closures.iphone - https://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/kaikorai-primary-school-nz/id577033419?mt=8Android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skoolbag.kaikorai&hl=en

If you have returned the sheet please do so as soon as possible. We will begin delivering milk to classes on Monday and we are interested in any feedback both positive and negative.

School Ski TripFollowing on from the success of last years ski trip to Cardrona we will be running two weekends this year. If you are interested in attending one of these weekends please contact Anna Ollerenshaw at [email protected] for an information sheet.

TOILET PAPER FUNDRAISER

So, if you would still like to place an order for Toilet Paper then it’s not too late! Remember that you can also get orders from other people – extended family, neighbours, friends, work colleagues, etc. The more orders, the more money we raise for the school.

Orders can be brought to the School Office or emailed to Tor (see below for email address). Payment can be made by cash, cheque (made out to Kaikorai School Parents Group) or internet (bank account number is 03 0905 0043005 00). If you don’t have an order form and you would like one, just let Tor know and it can be emailed to you.
