Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate the feast of Pentecost. The readings tell us of the experience the disciples had when the Holy Spirit first came to them. We are told that they were trans-formed from scared, timid people, to confident ones who made bold proclamations in the name of the Lord. It was the Holy Spirit that enlightened them, empowered them, and enabled them to be about the work of this new born Church. The gifts of the Holy Spirit gave them the confi-dence and trust they needed to leave their fears behind. Im-agine how incredibly saddened and disheartened they must have felt after they had lost their friend, Jesus, when He ascended back to heaven. They must have felt abandoned and alone. However, in the Spirit, they rememberedJesus' words that He would not leave them abandoned, that He would be with them until the end of the world. As they were filled with the Holy Spirit, their lives were forever changed. Their fears were replaced with confidence and trust. They went boldly into a new future, a new life for themselves and this enabled them to proclaim the message of the Gospel to all the earth.

As we continue in the initiative to Renew My Church, we, too, are being asked to do the same. While we might be feeling saddened, disheartened, or even afraid, as those first disciples, we have every reason to believe that we can do what they did. As the Holy Spirit helped them through tran-sition and change, so, too, does that same Spiritcome upon us and help us to do the same. As we embrace this new identity of Divine Mercy Parish, we take with us our per-sonal histories of Sacred Heart and St. Philip Parishes. These histories will be forever with us, and it is that rich-ness of our past that will lead us to create a bold and imagi-native future for ourselves with God's mercy and love to guide us. The first Twelve did it. Are we ready to do it? If so, then "come and see" what the Lord has in store for us. If it comes from the Holy Spirit, it can only be good!

Sunday Reflection Our Easter season ends on this day, Pentecost Sunday, the 50th day after Easter. From the moment the Holy Spirit de-scended upon the Apostles in that upper room the Church’s mission began and continues in and through us today. At that time Pentecost was an already existent festival, which celebrated “the first fruits of the harvest.” We are called to share our “first fruits,” our many gifts.

The reading from the Acts of the Apostles tells how and to whom the Holy Spirit descended. The Apostles “were all in one place together.” This is the same unity to which we are called; this is one of the reasons we gather as a community to pray and to worship. For them to receive the Holy Spirit they had to be open to it, acknowledging their own empti-ness. If we are not empty, we cannot be filled. The admis-sion and acceptance of our own emptiness is one means by which the Holy Spirit can fill us and make us whole.

St. Paul explains the gifts received by us through the Holy Spirit. “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit.” Paul lists the different ways we may be gifted. In doing that he says “There are different workings, but the same God.” The gifts may be different, but the giver, and the one who provides the strength and ability to use those gifts is God himself. All we are; all we have; all we are able to do is from the grace of God. We are all “one Body” in Christ.
