Let Us Know Who’s Serving: Military Service Board We need your help updating our Active Service Military Board maintained in the Narthex so that our parish may continue to pray for those on active duty service throughout the world. If you would like a family mem-ber or close friend added to the board OR to update current information on the board, please contact Carolyn Ditsworth at 214-222-6701 or [email protected]. Please provide name, service branch, rank, current location, and relationship to yourself. A photo is appreciated.

Dear Friends in Christ,

So many Catholic men and women from the Diocese of Fort Worth are serving and placing their lives in harm’s way as members of the mili-tary branches of service to protect us from our enemies. These men and women and their families require pastoral care, including access to the celebration of Mass and to the other sacraments especially when they are far from home.

Pope Saint John Paul II established the Archdiocese for Military Ser-vices (AMS) in 1985 to provide for the pastoral and sacramental needs of these brave men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and also to men and women enrolled in in U.S. Military Academies, patients and staff at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam, and those working in civil-ian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders.

While the salaries and retirement of military chaplains are paid for by the government, the AMS receives no funding from the military or the government in support of programs and services vital to the mission and ministry of its mission, including Vocations, Evangelization and Catechesis, Sacramental Records, Tribunal and Veterans Affairs.

Unlike the Diocese of Fort Worth and other dioceses, the AMS has no parishes or parish registries. The AMS has no weekly collections and relies solely on the generosity of private donations to support its pro-grams and services. Your support of the 2019 Triennial National Col-lection for the AMS will bring the Gospel, the sacraments and other forms of spiritual consolation to our family members making the sacri-fice of patriotism in military service to defend our freedoms. Please pray for these heroes and be generous in this special collection. I remain,

Gratefully Yours in Christ The Most Reverend Michael F. Olson, STD, MA Bishop of Fort Worth

Second Collection: Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA Weekend of November 9/10 Next weekend our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdio-cese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). This collection is only tak-en up once every three years, so please take this opportunity to assist the mission of AMS. Including families, AMS priests and deacons serve approximately 1.8 million Catholics who hail from 50 states and U.S. territories. Bishop Olson’s letter this weekend describes the extent of the needs of AMS and what your donations can do to help. To learn more about the AMS, go to milarch.org/nationalcollection Donate to the collection using the basket provided in the Narthex next weekend, or anytime online at stphilipcc.weshareonline.org

Growing in Grace Christ the King

Prayer for the Week Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, assist me in my last agony.

“Purgatory basically means that God can put the pieces back together again. That He can cleanse us in such a way that we are able to be with Him and can stand there in fullness of life.” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Purgatory: The Church Suffering According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “Purgatory is a state of final purification after death and before entrance into heaven for those who died in God’s friendship, but were only imperfectly purified; a final cleansing of human imperfection before one is able to enter into the joy of heaven” (CCC, #1031). Many people mistakenly believe that Purgatory is a place invented later by Catholics, but there are several references to Purgatory in the Scriptures: 2 Maccabees 12:46, when Judas Maccabeus made atonement for the dead so they might be deliv-ered from their sins, and 1 Corinthians 3:15, where St. Paul speaks of a “cleansing by fire.” Based in Scripture, the Church has consistently taught this doctrine and defined it throughout history (see Council of Florence, Council of Trent).

Help the Holy Souls in Purgatory The Holy Souls cannot earn any merit to get out of Purgatory. It is up to us, the faithful, also known as the Church Militant, to assist them. This is why it’s important not to assume that our departed loved ones are in Heaven; they may still need our prayers!

Offer Masses: Stop by the church office and ask about offering a Mass for your dearly departed. Also remember to pray by name for the faith-ful departed at Mass.

Pray: The Rosary; St. Gertrude Prayer (several times a day); the Morning Offering; Read Psalm 130 “De Profundis” (The Church uses this in the liturgy as the official prayer for the souls in Purgatory); Pray the Novena for the Holy Souls composed by Alphonsus Liguori. Pray daily: Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Visit a cemetery or columbarium and pray for the souls there.

Fast: Fasting is not just for LENT. You can fast any time and from many things. It can be very simple or very complex: you can fast from screen time or giving unsolicited opinion; if you love cheese burgers, skip the cheese! Courtesy of St. Philip Stewardship Committee

VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK - Nov 3-9 National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long cele-bration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaco-nate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations.

During this week, a good question to ask ourselves is, “How am I being called to respond to the love of God in my life?” The first part of that answer is “to love God in return.” This is what is meant by the Second Vatican Council’s “universal call to holiness.” Holiness is nothing more than allowing the love of God to live in us and then through us to others. The more we allow God to love us, the more readily we will give of our-selves in loving and helping others. It is an amazing journey that God invites us to undertake. It leads to our ultimate happiness and fulfil-ment.

Every person is called to serve God and neighbor in some particular way; in the Church we call this our vocation. God calls some to mar-riage, some to ordained ministry, and some to consecrated life. It is important that we ask God how He wants us to receive His love, and how He wants us to share that love with others. It is only in living out this two-fold call to love God and to love our neighbor that we come to know God’s will for our lives, which is our surest path to joy.

It’s Time to Return the Haitian Pilgrims Coin Boxes! On November 9th and 10th the Haitian Pilgrims will be collecting the coin boxes you received in July. We sincerely appreciate all the sacri-fices you've made these past few months to put your loose change in the boxes. Of course coins make the boxes quite heavy, so we're hap-py to accept cash and checks . We will be using the funds to help the people of St. Joseph's parish in Flamand, St. Nicholas parish in Dumont, St. Therese parish in Boileau, and our thirteen students who have received college scholarships under the Moise Nacier Scholarship Program. Haiti is suffering terribly, more now than we have experi-enced in the past 20 years. This year of severe drought, food, and gas shortages have left the people in severe need. We pray that you also are blessed for your generosity and support of our mission to help the poorest of the poor in the Western Hemisphere.
