FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT │ APRIL 2, 2017

ST. PHILIP PARISH www.stphilipgb.org PAGE 2

Do you believe this?     Jesus poses this ques on to Martha; the ques on is not only can he raise her brother Lazarus from the grave …does she/ do we believe that Jesus is the resurrec on and the life.

Our religion rests on the pa ern of death and resurrec-on at every stage of our lives; how o en we are

called upon to surrender our me and energy for the sake of others … dying to ourselves. Do we trust that God will bring us to new life, even in the midst of so many demands made upon us? Are we open to the ways that God may surprise us? …giving us new life and hope in unexpected ways? If we can say “Yes, Lord, I believe” then we may be able to share the joy of Lazarus and the new life of Christ’s resurrec on.

APRIL Our “Catholic” focus is on the paschal mysteries as we approach Holy Week and Easter; the Jewish com-munity observes Passover (11-18), and Orthodox Easter coincides with the Roman calendar.

There are numerous opportuni es to respond to Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment, ‘Laudato Si’ : Keep America Beau ful Month, Na onal Garden Month, Love a Tree Day (16) – how about the Cross? – Earth Day (22), Arbor Day (28), and Water a Flower Day (30). Oh, and don’t forget Tax Day!

Lazarus, come out! Imagine a hollow voice coming from within the tomb: “Naww ….. don’t think so.” And Jesus cries out again: “Dude! Are you crazy?” The hollow voice responds: “No thanks. I’m kind of used to it in here by now. Don’t think I could live out there anymore.”

How many people are living in other kinds of tombs? ..and, they prefer to stay there. “Tombs” can come in all shapes and sizes: substance abuse, lazi-ness, resentment, holding on to grudges, etc. For each of these there is a grace if we open ourselves to it; Lent is the perfect me to ask for it.

Development Corner

In recent months this Development Corner has emphasized

the benefits for you and your parish of your suppor ng

your parish through a direct distribu on from an IRA, if you

are age 70-1/2 or older. Such a distribu on, called a Quali-

fied Charitable Distribu on (QCD), counts toward your min-

imum required distribu on. It brings income tax advan-

tages, but a bit differently than other charitable contribu-

ons (maybe even be er for you, depending on your cir-

cumstances)! One considera on is that a QCD does not get

included in your federal income, so even if you claim the

standard deduc on and do not itemize deduc ons, you can

s ll benefit from a QCD.

Feel free to contact the parish office at 468-7848 for more

informa on on this, or your IRA administrator or tax advi-

sor on how it might apply for your specific situa on.

Meatless Meals The purpose of the fast is to remind us of our dependence on God, and our need for God’s grace in our lives. CRS Rice Bowl offers a variety of simple, meatless meal ideas from some of the countries CRS serves around the world. These meals are all the more important in light of Pope Francis’ call to care for crea on, our common home. The food industry is wrought with inefficiencies that harm the planet and priori ze the bo om line over the poor and vulnera-ble—and the earth. These meals become not just an oppor-tunity to fast, but an invita on to engage in global solidarity to bring us into greater connec on with our brothers and sisters no ma er where they live.

5th Sunday of Lent

“Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you believe you will see the glory of God?’”

John 11:40 Many of us say that we believe in God. We go to church on Sunday. We volunteer for events at our parish. But when life gets hard, the pressure is on, things aren’t going our way, do we really believe, do we really put our trust in the Lord? When we live a life of grati-tude, being thankful for the gifts we have been given, we really do see that God is providing all that we need.

ST. PHILIP ALTAR SOCIETY’S Annual Spring Salad Pot Luck Supper is

Also, please save your “gently used” RUMMAGE SALE items for our annual sale in mid-June. We can use adult/child/baby clothing, furniture, household & misc. items. Drop off

… muriendo a nosotros mismos.

Y Jesús grita otra vez: “¡Oye, muchacho! ¿Estás loco? Y la voz hueca responde: “No, gracias. Ya me he acos-tumbrado a estar aquí.
