General Manager’s MessageBy Bill Wagner, CCM

I am proud to report to you that once again, RivieraCountry Club has been selected by The Club LeadersForum as a Platinum Club of America. This excellentrating, which is conducted every three years, is intended to

identify America’s most highly regarded private clubs. Riviera ranked number53 among country clubs throughout the United States. This designation wasarrived at when over 6,000 of this nation’s club managers and club presidentswere recently solicited for their opinions of club preeminence in five differentareas: quality of membership, tradition and heritage, amenities, governance, andprofessional management and staff. To be selected as a Platinum Club meansthat Riviera stands among the top four percent of America’s private clubs. Themembership and staff has a right to be proud of this honor, because it stands asa tribute to everyone who contributed so much to this achievement.Congratulations, everyone.

Camp Riv is up and running and from all indications is a resounding success.Thank you to Lee Nacarato, Athletic Director; Barry Phillips, Golf Pro; andAlina Pila, Tennis Pro, and their staff of summer counselors that help keep ouryoungest Riviera members busy and happy throughout the summer.

Whether you are traveling for the next couple of months or remaining here toenjoy the Riviera amenities, I hope you have a most enjoyable summer.

Bill Wagner

Riviera has been judged a five-starPlatinum Club since 1999.

Welcome New Members

Play it Safe!

Although Riviera Country Club is considered by most of us tobe an oasis and safe haven in the middle of our bustling city,it is important not to leave purses, briefcases, and otherpersonal items in view in our vehicles. Most parking lotbreak-ins happen when an item is in plain view. The result is asmash and grab!

We do have security personnel walking through the parkinglots from time to time, but please help us remove thetemptation.

Texas Hold ‘Em Tournaments

It has been suggested by some of your fellow Members thatRiviera host poker tournaments during the year.

• A maximum of 33 players would be able to participate in each event

• Club prizes would be awarded• Deli Buffet would be provided

In an effort to gauge interest, please let us know how often you would be interested in playing: once a year, twice a year, quarterly, monthly?

Please e-mail us at [email protected] call 305 661-5331 ext. 245 with further suggestions.

R.W.G.A. By Virginia Wheeler

The RWGA season of major tournaments is over, but the summerseason has begun, with many ladies participating in the weeklyevents. The starting times are now from 8:00 to 10:00 A.M. onTuesdays, to accommodate those who wish to beat the heat. Theshotgun start times will remain at 8:30 or 8:45 A.M. Turn in allscorecards to the Golf Pro Shop, and they will record your scoresfor handicap purposes.

The Rules Seminar that Kevin Carlson conducted was very wellattended, which means everyone will be playing by the rules orwill be able to look up a rule, if necessary. Kevin recommendedthat the rule book be kept in your golf bag. He pointed out thatoften knowing the correct rule can be to your advantage. Knowinghow to look up the rule is even more helpful. Good luck!

Once again for all those who are out of town for the summer, please record your scores and submit them to the Golf Pro Shopto ensure a proper handicap when you return in the Fall.

A special thanks to the Golf Pro Shop for all their assistance overthe year, to Dottie Norton for stepping up to take the presidency, and to her Board who worked so well together.

Have a wonderful summer!

July Riviera Fitness Schedule(see the website for possible changes to the August fitness schedule.)

Swim only in areas where you are in a lifeguard’s line ofvision. If there is no guard on duty, swim with a partner ormake sure someone reliable is watching. Arm flotation devicesare a great idea for young children, but are not a replacementfor parental supervision.

If you have a pool at your home, keep the following close byfor use in an emergency situation: an 8-foot pole, a sturdy rope, and a personal flotation device.

Summer is ‘lightning season’! If you are caught outside duringa lightning storm, do not hide under a tree or any other largeobject, and do not congregate with other people. Separate, staycrouched low to the ground, and cover your ears!

Exposure to South Florida sun during the summer season canbe extremely harmful, even after only a short period.Thoroughly apply SPF of 15 or more within a few minutes ofsun exposure. Children should be covered immediately and sun block reapplied frequently.

WELLNESS TIPS FOR SUMMER…

Don’t forget your lips when applying sunscreen! The lowerlip is one of the most common sites for skin cancer. Use a clearor colored sunscreen lipstick or, for better protection, an opaquesun block.

For great BBQ hamburgers that are lower in fat, substitutebeans or grains (bulgur or rice) for some of the chopped meat. This will also enhance the flavor and boost the fiber content ofyour burgers.

When shopping for new sneakers, take your old pair withyou, so a knowledgeable salesperson can evaluate the wearpattern to help you choose the right shoe. Wear the type ofsocks you normally exercise in, and run around the store a bitbefore you decide to purchase!
