The end of the year always brings sad farewells. Last week we gathered at the Winter Gardens to say a final goodbye to Year 11 at their wonderful Prom. Arriving in all sorts of transportation, from a horse and cart to a fleet of motor bikes to a vast array of limos, fire engines and service vehicles, they looked splendid and so grown-up in their ball gowns, dinner jackets and suits. It was a joyous event but with much sadness, on both sides, as we saw them leave us as young men and women who had grown, in so many ways, over their 5 years at the school. The staff present felt immense pride in how they had all turned out. It was also lovely to see so many parents and family members gather outside the Winter Gardens to witness and photograph the arrivals. We shall miss them all and wish them every success in the future.

We shall, of course, see many of them back at school on August 23rd, to receive their GCSE results and then on 21st November at the Awards Evening and Celebration when they will receive their certificates.

This is also a time when we say farewell to staff who are moving on to new ventures. The leavers are:

Marie-Neige Smith – MFL teacher, is retiring after 20 years at Willingdon. Marie-Neige has been a most dedicated teacher over her years at the school, helping develop MFL and carry it through the many changes it has been faced with during her time here, including the introduction of Spanish. A wonderful form tutor whom many a student will remember with great fondness. We will miss her sorely but wish her well in retirement.

Bill Holland – Assistant Headteacher and DoL of Science, is leaving to take up an Assistant Headteacher post at Longhill School, in Brighton. Bill has been an outstanding teacher and Head of Science and over the last 3 years taken on the intervention mantle as Assistant Headteacher. Many will remember his unforgettable performances in our pantomimes. He will be a great loss on many fronts.

Ann Sinclair – Science Teacher,

A Fond FArewell

is leaving to re-locate to London. Ann has been an excellent science teacher who has contributed significantly to the development of science in her time at the school and has been a much valued and respected form tutor to many a student. Her commitment to the school and her students will be much missed.

Val Slack – has worked for the school in a variety of support staff roles for nearly 30 years. She retired from her full-time role many years ago now but has been working for the staffroom committee for the last 7 years. She has now decided to retire fully. We shall miss her dearly and wish her a long and happy retirement.

Hayley Mallipoudy – ADoL English, is going on maternity leave for the year.

Jake Lambert – Cover Supervisor, is leaving his current role at the school to take up a History GTP placement here.

I would like to thank them all for everything they have done for the school and its students. Their dedication, commitment and professionalism will be much

missed by us all and I wish them all well for the future.I am delighted to say we have made some excellent new appointments but I will introduce you to them in September.

Twitter …as part of our move to keep in contact with parents, you can now follow me as Headteacher, on Twitter. I will not be using it to inform you of key information, as we will use the usual forms of communication for that. However, I will be adding additional comments to events and happenings at the school which you may wish to follow should you be interested and skilled in the world of Twitter. Please do not use it to contact me for I will not respond, as that should always be done through the usual channels. You can follow me at@wcsheadteacher.

…and finally may I thank you all for the support you give the school and your children and wish you a relaxing, warm and dry summer break.

Students return to school at 8.30am on Wednesday, 5th September.

Ian Jungius. Headteacher

On Thursday 5th July, one hundred and fifty eight Year 11 students attended the Winter Gardens to celebrate their five years at Willingdon Community School.

As always, the arrival of the students in their many varied forms of transport brought Eastbourne traffic to a standstill; with many friends and family anxious to photograph this unique occasion. A special thank you to Mr

Nash and Mr Barrow for their help with directing the traffic.

All the boys and girls looked stunning in their suits and dresses.

All those who attended enjoyed a

Prom 2012

delicious three course meal, a sweet buffet, Mr Roche’s parting speech and a raffle followed by the first dance by the senior prefect team. This was a very entertaining dance and launched the celebrations to a new level, with the entire year group soon joining them on the dance floor.

Students also spent the night posing for our photographer and attempting a high score on the rodeo bull! Top score was by Bethan Statham with 32 seconds!

I wish every member of the year group well with their future studies and careers.

On Tuesday 4th of July, we held a Celebration of Success evening at which many

students were rewarded for the hard work they had put in over the year. Each subject area of the school had nominated several students for the awards but as ever, there could only be one winner. The winners of the awards were presented with a trophy and certificate to mark their success. The runners up

will each receive a certificate in the final assemblies of the year.

Mr Jungius opened the proceedings with a speech of welcome and the awards swiftly followed. Mrs Townsend - Smith introduced her latest successor, Mr Roche, who will now be Director of Student Progress for Year 7. Each Director of Student Progress read out the awards for their own year group and made two awards of their own – one for Most Improved Student and the Community award.

The evening was punctuated by performances by ‘Natural Selection’, a band of students from each of the year groups which was formed for the express purpose of performing at the awards. They arranged the music and rehearsed it without supervision, their talent and passion for music being the only motivation they needed. They performed two songs by the band Train. Both were received with delighted applause.

The evening concluded with a few brief words from Mr Jungius and the audience were invited to share a buffet and stroll down to the ‘Inspired’ art exhibition in the drama studio. It was a very pleasant evening for all involved.

The Art and Media Exhibition was a great success this year and celebrated the talents and commitment of students from across each year group. We were particularly thrilled this year to also display a selection of lights, designed and created by students on the Product Design course. The light installation corner looked stunning under the spotlights of the Drama Studio and really showed off the talents of the students on the course. This year’s ‘Creative Thinkers’ project focused on the theme of ‘The 2012 Olympics’. Year 7 students were looking at how artists, since the invention of photography, have described movement and looked at the contemporary designs for posters to advertise the 2012 Olympics. The students then worked in groups to design and create an A3 poster for the event. The project was very successful and demonstrated the excellent art-making and teamwork skills of our current Year 7’s. The Year 7’s were also represented in their Japanese collages which looked stunning, exhibited together with

a selection of workbooks. The year 9 exhibits were highly impressive and it was great to not only see the 9 1/1 group’s incredible drawings on Balinese Masks like that of Millie Shoesmith, but also the Year 9 science fiction towers from across all Year 9 groups. In particular, Chloe Fogg and Harry Gape’s structures were excellent and very eye-catching and really exemplified the imagination, creativity and hard-work that all of the students put into their structures. We also exhibited the stunning work by five highly committed Year 9 students who took their GCSE in Art and Design this year; Vanessa Turner, Willow Drewett, Maria McCulloch,

Saffron Saunderson and Ellie Brown. The Year 10 and 11 jackets hanging up and the workbooks underneath on the tables were also quite incredible and demonstrated some highly detailed drawings and collages to support the

Page 12: July2012 Contact Magazine

designs of the jackets. Students like Rebecca Preston and Becky Kearns really stood out and it was fantastic to see such a vast range of detailed and exquisite drawings and designs. The BTEC Year 10 group had their miniature hats displayed, with some amazingly tiny detailed paintwork from students such as Bailey Langford, Ella Kent and Sophie Sandys. The GCSE Graphics ‘Day of the Dead’ banners looked brilliant and exhibited the talents of Abi Lloyd, Becky Marshall and Rebecca Pellett, amongst others.

At the celebration evening, on Wednesday, we also showed the Year 8 Animation films that were created in workshops over the past 2 weeks. The theme of

the Olympics was also chosen for this project and students worked in pairs to create a short piece of film with an accompanying music piece in the students’ music lessons. The films were very comic and showed the fun personality of our students here. Do look out

for them on our school website in the next couple of weeks!

The GCSE media studies films shown outside the Drama studio drew quite an audience and it was exciting to see students push the boundaries and produce such mature and technically brilliant films. The work produced by our students really shows what can be achieved with dedication and hard work and we were very proud to

look around and see what amazing talent we have at this school.Thank you to all parents and students who attended the exhibition and staff for their support, especially Miss Pester for giving up her teaching space in the Drama studio, Miss Walker, Mrs Rodgers, Mr Pavey, Miss Griffiths, Mr King, Miss McCabe and Mr Healey for their help in putting it all together.

It is always an exciting time of year when in May we begin the first heats of the Young Chef competition. The theme this year was “A meal fit for a Queen” to tie in with the jubilee, a sumptuous selection of food was cooked and included, rack of lamb, coronation chicken, crispy coated chicken breast, roast duck breast, smoked haddock and spaghetti carbonara to name but a few. This year as before, my team of judges Mr Pavey, Miss Pester and Mr Roche tried, tasted and applauded the food placed before them by the entrants. Congratulations to Kynitta Cartwright, Chloe Hook, Thomas Sangster, Stevie Metcalfe, Emily Lewis, Emily Newell, Lucy Capon, Molly Shepherd- Chandler, Megan Bowles, Jack York, James Blackmore, who all took part in the first round. Thomas, Chloe, Lucy, Jack, Emily Newell, went through to the Semi finals competing for the place in the final taking place here at Willingdon against St Bedes, Eastbourne Academy, Causeway and Ratton. This year we also had entrants from Y10, Megan Chell, Alex Hatfield, Lois Attwater, and

Dan Reigler cooking alongside each other for the coveted place in the final. Lucy Capon was chosen for the Y7-8 category with her dish of chicken breast stuffed with cranberry, blue cheese and bacon, with new potatoes and green beans on the side. Dan Reigler for the Y9-10 group who created a tower of bubble and squeak, black pudding and pork escalope drizzled with a blue cheese and apple sauce with a side of asparagus wrapped in Palma ham and roast carrots. Quite amazing dishes both totally fit for a queen. On Thursday 5th July both students represented the school beautifully. There was tension in the air as the cooks began to chop, stir and mash to the best of their ability. You could, (if you will pardon the pun) cut the air with a knife!

Lucy and Dan were true master chefs, working under pressure and keeping cool and collected. Against stiff competition Lucy was a runner up in her group with Dan winning the Y9-10 section. The judges described his dish as

Page 15: July2012 Contact Magazine

“Inspired”.Congratulations to Dan who has won a meal for four at the Grand hotel in Eastbourne. Also however, congratulations extend to all those who took part. It is true testimony to their confidence, skills and maturity that many of the students at Willingdon can cook sophisticated meals totally independently. Indeed it has been mentioned that potentially they can cook better than some of the judges! A happy summer to you all, and if you do any cooking take a picture and send it in to me.

The Maths’ department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable summer holiday.

We would like to emphasise that for those students entering Year 10 and Year 11, it is really important that you do not let your maths knowledge and skills slip over the summer. As such, we recommend you spend two-to-three thirty minute sessions a week revising via My Maths or the Maths Watch CD (accessible via Remote access).

Just a bit of revision during the summer, will reduce stress levels on your return to school in September. Please speak to your teachers regarding their recommendations.

Note, that anyone who still struggles with their multiplication tables should practice, practice, practice these over the summer.

Find & Snap Year 6 students enjoyed a Transition Group Work day recently, when as one of their tasks, they were given cameras and a list of things around the school to photograph. Many of the students commented on how it helped their confidence in finding their way around the school. They particularly enjoyed being allowed to take pictures of older children in lessons, and teachers in their ‘offices’. The winner for the loveliest picture went to April for her photo in the ecospace.

During term 6, there has been a competition that involves Years 7, 8 and 9. In this cleverly thought out challenge, students were given an Olympic card. On this card there were the Olympic rings and in each ring there wa s an Olympic value;• Determination• Excellence• Respect• Courage• FriendshipEach student had to go round with their card and get five signatures from five different teachers in each ring. This was a challenging experience because students had to earn these by doing as the value says. Once they had all five signatures in a ring, they were rewarded with a band of that colour and that said which Olympic value they had achieved. They were also awarded with a certificate. Lastly, when all bands had been awarded they were put into a draw to go to the Olympics with the teacher that they are closed to at school! This was clever because it tied to Great Britain’s Olympic theme as we are hosting the Olympics in London this year! The wrist bands were five colours: red, black, blue, yellow and green. The red ring represents Friendship. This means that students had to help out their peers and other members of the school. This could be done,

for example, by staying afterschool and helping people who are stuck in lessons in a catch-up club. The black ring represents Courage. This means that when students were brave or strode forward and kept on trying even though they knew it would be difficult, a teacher would sign it. Furthermore, the blue ring represents Excellence. When the students were getting this band, they had to achieve the best they could in lessons, resulting in the teachers signing it. The yellow ring represents Determination. Students had to keep trying and had to be determined to reach their goals. Lastly, the green ring represents Respect. Students can earn this by holding the door open for people, taking care of equipment in lessons, etc. The PE staff gave out the bands and certificates. Finally, on sports day, the winners were announced. Josh Bennett and Bryn Smith’s names were drawn and therefore are the lucky winners of an Olympic ticket. Congratulations to all pupils who have worked hard to consistently demonstrate the Olympic values and have earned wrist bands.
