MONDAYS 7:00 P.M.

What an incredible summer we are having at the City of Praise Church Ministries!

We got our praise on in the park and celebrated our amazing fathers. We kicked off a 5000-hour challenge that will make a powerful

impact on our community. Our wonderful basketball players showed not only excellent skills on the basketball court, but they also showed wonderful sportsmanship off of the court.

As we think about all of the amazing things that are happening at the City of Praise Church Ministries, we are not just excited about what you are doing. We are also excited about how you are doing it.

Many of us understand the importance of doing God’s work, but it shows great maturity in Christ to do God’s will clothed in compassion. For that reason, the theme of the July issue of Lion’s Roar Magazine is, “What are you wearing this season?” The most fashionable Christians will always be clothed in kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. We hope that this magazine and every scripture in it will be a great blessing to you and your family.

God Bless,

PASTOR & FIRST LADY

Clothe Yourself With Compassion

In Matthew 28: 18 – 20, the Lord gives His followers clear instructions in the great commission. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

As believers in Jesus Christ, you and I have the precious gift of salvation. Quite simply, this means that we will spend eternity with Christ. We also have a spiritual assignment from the Lord to share this good news with people all over the world.Because of these marching orders, churches, para-church ministries and lone individuals have suited up with the word of God. You

and I see them every day on street corners in America. We can turn on the television to see them in all corners of the globe.

But the most well-intentioned Biblical scholar can turn more people away from the Lord than win people to the Lord if they are not clothed in compassion. St. Francis of Assisi is credited with saying, “Preach the gospel always and if necessary use words.” I believe that these words reach to the very core of the great commission.

If we are clothed in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, we will draw more people to Christ than we ever could by memorizing scripture that does not reflect the character of our own lives.

My fear is that we would miss

opportunities to increase the fellowship of believers because we are clothed in jealousy, strife, bitterness and anger all while professing to be in intimate relationship with Christ.

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” These are the famous words that Mahatma Gandhi said after an encounter with people who claimed to be in relationship with Christ. Imagine if Gandhi had seen the same compassion, kindness, humility and gentleness in Christians that he had read about in Christ. Gandhi had the potential to reach literally billions for Christ.

Our witness is not complete when we accomplish the technical task of sharing the good news. Our witness is the ongoing testimony of showing compassion to others.

Clothe Yourself With Compassion

3 - Lion’s Roar

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever griev-ances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these

virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. -Colossians 3:12-14

Praise in the Park

6 - Lion’s Roar

To God be the Glory, on June 10, 2012, The City of Praise Church Ministries celebrated Father’s Day with an explosion of fun, food and fellowship. One of the most precious highlights included tributes from Pastor Joel Peebles’ loving family. Joel, Jr., Jordon, John, Jr., Yolanda, and Danielle Peebles shared their personal experience with Pastor Peebles. They spoke with heart-felt words about how Pastor Peebles is always clothed in compassion and kindness in spite of life’s ups and downs.

One of the greatest efforts adding to the success of Praise in the Park was the commitment by Trenillo “Tree” Waters and his audio crew. First Lady Ylawnda Peebles gave them their public praise and thanks. They spent the night protecting the very expensive sound equipment neces-sary to properly project the joyful noises that are inevitable when God’s people get together!

And the joyful noises came from not only the City of Praise family laughing with joy and excite-ment, but also from amazing performers celebrating God. Those attending Praise in the Park heard joyful noises from gospel artists Jonathan Nelson, Outreach 24/7, and the City of Praise Mass Choir. Because of this excellent and Godly praise and worship, all came to know Jesus better. (Matthew 15:31 and Joel 2:23)

To properly celebrate fathers, Pastor Peebles called all the men who are fathers up to the front to be recognized. For the outstanding recognition of being a father, Pastor Peebles asked everyone with a camera in the audience to act like the paparazzi and take pictures of the fathers. Pastor Peebles did a count down for all to get ready and pull out their camera. On the count of three, all the paparazzi pointed the cameras and flashes of lights were everywhere. Hundreds of bright lights were in the atmosphere to see what Godly fatherhood looks like. And finally surprise guest, Bishop Secular, God’s gifted comedian joined the celebration. He made everyone laugh their cares away and everyone appreciated him, too. Because as Proverbs 17:22 says, a joyful heart is good medicine. First Lady Peebles shared her comments about the picnic: “I had to invest this time to honor our city of Praise Family. The Praise in the Park Father’s Day Festival still has me in awe. We prayed together. We worshipped together. We danced together. We shouted together. We laughed together. We ate together. We loved one another. We appreciated one another. We worked har-moniously, and ALL to the Glory of God our Father, With intense LOVE and ADORATION.”

One of the most famous garments in the Bible had an interesting way in helping one of the Old Testament patriarchs fulfill an important role in history.

Genesis 37: 3 – 4Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe (coat of many colors) for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

Joseph had dreams that he would someday rule over his older brothers and his family. These dreams caused his brothers to hate him even more.

Genesis 37: 10 – 11When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

When Joseph was about 17, his brothers’ jealousy towards him grew to a dangerous pitch. One day Jacob sent Joseph out to check on his brothers who were tending sheep. The brothers who were clothed in jealousy, envy and hate came up with a plan to get rid of Joseph.

At first they were going to kill him and say that animals devoured him. But Reuben convinced them not to shed his blood.

Genesis 37: 23-24 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

Genesis 37:31 -33Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.” He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”

Of course, Joseph’s amazing story does not end there. Read your Bible and draw closer to God.
