A REPORT - REvIEw & LEssONs LEARNTALUMPICS
Scope: The scope o this note as indicated inthe heading is to analyse the various aspectso Alumpics as a eedback or the uturemanagers.
Alumpics was conducted or the rst time inthe present ormat on the basis o suggestionso well meaning riends last year and wascontinued in the same orm due to its success.Since there were no complaints on the ormat, team ormation etc., the same orm was
continued this year also. This was also done toavoid delays o orming teams aresh etc.
Alumpics was intended to start in October/ early November but could be started onlyby late November due to various reasons. There were urther delays due to weather, non availability o majority o members /captains due to various reasons, interveningexternal tournaments etc and against theplanned completion by January 2012 could be
completed only by 18th March. Nine gameswere included and the ormat was retained aslast year but or some change in points system.
LeSSon 1:Alumpics must be started latest by October15th giving about 3months or the newlyelected committee to settle down and cometo terms with the scenario and early enoughor games to be completed beore say January20th. Schedule o external tournaments eg:TNTA , Cricket T-20, Bridge tournamentsetc need to be conveyed in advance tothe Alumpics Committee by the SportsSub Committee (SC) Members to help the
scheduling.
Sb cmmitt mmbsivlvmt: In some quartersthere was some reluctance onthe part o the SC membersto consider Alumpics as a parto the regular activities o the
group and quite some persuasion had to bedone beore events could be planned.
LeSSon 2:The MC / Sports Secretary need to ensurethat all SC members are inormed o their

role o SC member and a written acceptanceobtained on the same. There were instances omembers saying that I am not the SC member.Three games, TT, Chess & Carrom have noSC member and all those activities had to be
managed by the Alumpics committee resultingin extra strain.
Mmbs tiiti wasvery less compared to lastyear (100+ in place o 200+).While the concept was wellreceived, when it came to
participation there was a lot o reluctance. One reason could be that the Home teamcaptains have not personally written /spoken to the individuals and obtained theirconcurrence beore inducting them intothe team or inormed them o the schedulein advance. A high tea meeting o sorts withbudget provision o about 5-7.K per team mayhave yielded better results. The initiative orthis has to come rom the house captain. Thethinking that registrations should be called orbeore including them is rather not practicalsince even last year when registrations werecalled or only 20-30 members registered .About 1000+ mails, SMS & Phone calls (IDwise ) were sent by the Alumpics acilitatorto all members but still the response was whatit was.LeSSon 3:Communicate and earn the condence oyour team mates.
Wds: All wards were
permitted ater some initialreluctance to participate butthis led to some imbalancein some games / teams.
While the intent was to promote wardsparticipation and spot talents, wards abovea certain age are much more stronger thanthe members leading to the imbalance andreluctance on the part o the members tocompete against stronger opponents.
LeSSon 4:Either wards should be completely excludedrom Alumpics or an age limit o 15 years or
less ( say 10-15 ) only should be permitted toparticipate. A separate tournament or wardsonly in specic age groups could be thoughto. Some wards who participated were 25+years. This could also take care o examination
time blues. Some good young wards have beenspotted in Chess Siddhu Pillai & PrajdevPillai, Pooja Sukumar, Siddhu Ilango etc.Promoting / sponsoring them in externaltournaments either by the club or membersshould be seriously considered.
Tm fmti: Last yearthere was no complaintregarding team strengths. But this year there were
complaints o some teams being stronger thanothers in specic games, at least vocierouslyin one game. This is bound to happenbecause once a member is chosen or a teamor a particular game then he continues tobe a member o that team or all games. It isimpractical to have all teams equally strongin all the games and while one team mayhave a good team or game A or Game Banother team may be stronger. In spite o thecomplaints it must be noted that in almostall the games / majority o the games, thelast our comprised o one team rom eachhouse which is a good refection o the relativestrengths and the draws.
LeSSon 5:To get over the diculty all captains need toreview their team strengths at rst and comeout with their observations or adjustments byconsensus or by spotting new people.
Sdls:The Chairman &House Captains along withthe game SC members haveto work out a schedule and tryto complete the same. Whilepostponements and last minuteabsence are inevitable there
has got to be a give and take policy among thecaptains rather than insisting on scratches and/ or asking or postponements on a quid pro
quo basis. Conveying o schedules sucientlyin advance and conrming attendance shall bethe responsibility o the SC member and

the team captain respectively and in case ochanges all must be inormed in advance sothat there is minimum disappointment orthose who come and are told that the match ispostponed. Some members putting conditions
o availability only on certain specic times, days etc puts a lot o strain on the scheduleand captains need to take responsibility toavoid such scenarios. The SC member is onlyresponsible or scheduling, making the venueavailable organizing reerees etc i required, but ensuring the presence o the participantsis the sole responsibility o the team captain. This year at least two games were postponedby 1+ month due to the non-availability othe concerned players. While scratching canbe resorted to it preempts the original intento Alumpics: maximum participation omembers in as many games as possible. Hencehas to be avoided to the maximum extentpossible unless the participating team itselrecommends their being scratched. This yearthe number o scratches has been rather high
pits sstm: This yearor some games(Rummy , Chess ,Carroms & TT) thepoints were reducedrom 8 & 4 to 5 & 3respectively on a trial
basis since a particular captain elt all gamesare not equal and these games are per se notpopular etc . It is recommended that thisdecision be reversed back to the old system o10 & 5 or all games. All games are equal andi some games are not popular giving equal
importance would give them the necessaryllip. It also gives an equal opportunity to allteams to take a shot at the cup. I still desiredor some games more events can be conductedviz., Billiards & Snooker as two events eachhaving a total o 15 points , singles anddoubles in Tennis , & Shuttle , Round robinin Cricket so that all teams get some point say10/5/3/1 etc.
LeSSon / MoraL 6:
Winning is important but participation isequally important and the ormer is onlya bonus. It is very sincerely hoped that the
uture managers would be made aware o theissues , corrective actions as required be takenand ensure the continuation o the Alumpicsensured.
The club spends a lot o revenue inmaintaining the sports complex, about 4 to8 lakhs per annum and the ull benet canbe derived only i sports activities are giventhe necessary llip by conducting moresuch tournaments, triangular (Club , Sta &Students o AU) not conducted or a long timenow, inter club tournaments etc
Viv L almis d esiit - D-cs f talmi clb.(With inputs / eedbacks rom some Captains,Chairman, SC Members, Participants etc).

The third and seemingly last part o the Madagascar ranchise, Madagascar 3: Europes MostWanted, eatures our amiliar band o New York natives, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria theHippo and Melman the Girae, once again attempting to make their way back to their home the
Central Park Zoo. Ater nding themselves in Monte Carlo, and with the help o their riendlyrenegade penguins, they are orced to go on the run, passing themselves o as circusanimals to escape the clutches o Chantal DuBois, an animal control ocer with apenchant or big game trophies. DuBois is determined to hang Alexs head over hermantelpiece and will stop at nothing to capture him.
Part three o the series is denitely a step up rom the lacklustre sequel set in Arica.Part Two eatured a amilial reunion, much like the Lion King but unortunately, ellshort o the epic mark. Part Three is much more promising, alling back into the amiliar routine oadventures, un new charactersand a dastardly villain. The

It had been a pretty dry period or Tamil movies ater the memorable perormance o Vazhakku En18/9 the only void ller being the famboyant advertising o Saguni. The trailers and promotionswith the sprightly Karthi and ever entertaining Santhanam were everywhere, raising expectationsrom all sides. Could Saguni satisy the high hopes? Well, it did try and manage or the rst twentyminutes or so. Saguni is a classic case o a good actors potential going down the drain, no thanks to abad script and redundant editing. In act, it is one o those lms where no amount o good acting canrender any value because the characterization has been etched ineptly in the rst place.
The political scene in Tamil Nadu is going through some very bad times. Prakash Raj, the chieminister is not one known or his ethics. Meanwhile, Kamalakannan (Karthi), a simple lad romKaraikudi comes to the city with a personal agenda. Over the course o his struggle, he aces the wratho the CM. In retaliation, he determines to bring the CMs regime down by helping some worthyopponents gain power, aiding them with his shrewd political advice and Machiavellian tactics. Akingmaker in Indian politics it is easy to empathize with the optimism that the team might have elttowards the concept. However, the rst hal o the lm is unnecessarily stretched with little substance.Nevertheless, this part o the movie also oers some o the most enjoyable moments o the lm withthe brilliant chemistry o the Karthi - Santhanam duo. The movie could easily have done away withthe heroines role and it would not have made an iota o dierence. We are all aware that, barringa ew exceptions, the Indian lm industry is almost regressive when it comes to portraying womenwith strong characters. However Saguni takes that statement to a whole new level. On the bright side,Muthiah does a ne job with the cinematography and G.V Prakashs background score is mentionworthy. Manasellam Mazhaiye is a heart stealer. For generositys sake, we could just about try beingkind, keeping in mind that it was the debut venture o the director. However, in the end Saguni is asad case o wasted possibilities.

Yogurt
Yogurt or curd is yet another good conditioneror your hair. Rich in proteins, this has similar
properties like mayonnaise. Plain or mixedwith avocado, a generous portion o yogurtcan add the shine to your hair perect i youare allergic to eggs.
OilsAncient Ayurveda has it that warm oil is notjust therapeutic but also relaxing. Apartrom the usual coconut oil, there are many
more options which you can look towards, like canola oil or instance. Warm the oil andmassage it gently to your scalp. This will helpin better blood circulation and keep yourhair lustrous.

Planning and executing a wedding is nothingless than a high voltage, blood pressureraising, ulcer inducing eat o tactical andstrategic nesse. Planning and executing anIndian wedding is exponentially tougher.
In my unortunate case, however, the octaveso general chaos and conundrum are a ewpitches higher because you see, mine is across-cultural Indian wedding at that. Anunlikely alliance o the North and South, where Macher Jhol & Bhat meets Idli, Dosa& Sambar. A Bengali Brahmin girl marrying aTamil boy hailing rom the uber conservativeReddy community o Andhra Pradesh -thelowest o the lowest rung in the ladder o all
possible pre-approved permutations andcombination o cross-cultural marriages. Sowhen I announced my grand designs to marrythis unorthodox groom, all hell broke looseas expected. My grandmother went into areligious overdrive, praying desperately thatthis is just a temporary t o insanity and thatthe crazy og lits quickly. My mother wentinto denial and my ather sat on the encebetween cautious optimism and measureddisappointment. In Muthus amily the
sentiments were mirrored. Aside rom the actthat this is a love marriage (which is criminalin itsel), how would such a wedding takeplace? Where will the ceremony be held, whatcustoms would it ollow, would we have to get
married twice to appease the religious ritualso both parties, what about the dress code andvows? And so on it went.
Our horoscopes were consulted and ound to
be violently incompatible. Muthu and I werebeing tossed about like a volley in a tennismatch between our respective amilies. Attimes o such comic upheaval, we turned toChetan Bhagats middling novel The TwoStates our Bible as ar as cross-culturalmarriages are concerned. Taking a page outo this book, we decided to get our amilies tomeet. Only this time we were decidedly absentin the entire proceeding rather than serve as ashining example o everything our respective
cultures stands or.
It was a gamble but one that paid o. Ourparents may have had conficting agendas orthe marriage but they ound common groundand solace in their identical sentiments inthe logistical nightmare this wedding wouldinevitably turn out to be. That and also theact that they did not vehemently despise eachother as anticipated. In act our delectableroshogollas went down very well with the
Radhapurams as did the steaming rava idliswith the Banerjees. And so an auspicious dateand time was nally set - the beginning o ahappily ever ater you say? It was just the calmbeore the storm!

Sd cikt Gd, SdMark and Steve win the game for Australia
Australia won this match courtesy two peoplenamed Mark and Steve. No, they arentMark Waugh and Steve Waugh but MarkBenson and Steve Bucknor. They were thetwo on eld umpires and the number o poordecisions they made would later go on to haveramications o extraordinary proportions.
I only that test match had had UDRS, theIndian Cricket team would probably be amongthe strongest supporters o the system today.
The Umpiring blunders started rom theAustralian rst innings. Ricky Ponting wasclearly out caught behind down the leg side toSourav Ganguly. A huge appeal by the Indianswas turned down by Mark Benson that leteven the batsman surprised. He was battingon 17 then. However, as ate would have it,
Ricky Ponting was given out wrongly (LBW)by the same umpire ater he had inside edgeda Harbhajan Singh delivery on to his pads. Hehad already made 55 by then.
Andrew Symonds, batting on 29, nicked aIshant Sharma delivery to MS Dhoni, whocompleted the catch. The noise was so loudthat it would have been heard by the 30,000spectators at the SCG, the entire Indianteam and the entire television audience.Unortunately, the man who mattered, SteveBucknor, heard nothing. This let everyonewatching the match, fabbergasted. Buckorhad made his rst blunder or the game.
Symonds got another reprieve on 48, when theAustralian third umpire, Bruce Oxenord gavehim not out when he was actually out stumpedby MS Dhoni o an Anil Kumble delivery.
He got lucky or the third time when aHarbhajan Singh delivery down the leg sidewas collected by MS Dhoni who whippedthe bails o in a fash. Symonds was outside hiscrease. Dhonis appeal was not even reerredto the third umpire by Steve Bucknor who was
standing at square leg. Why did he not usetechnology when it was available? Symonds,by then had already reached 148. Australiawere nally bowled out or 463 and Symondsnished on 162*.
The Indian rst innings saw no majorumpiring blunders but a controversy o adierent kind the Monkey Gate scandal, the details o which are well known to one andall. India made 523 in their rst innings thanks
to tons rom Tendulkar and Laxman.
In the Australian second innings, Mike Husseywas caught behind o RP Singh and even this

time, the umpire heard nothing. Hussey wasbatting on 45 at that time and added a urther100 runs ater the lucky break that he got.Michael Clarke stood his ground ater being
caught at rst slip. Why did he do that? May behe hoped or another blunder but this was artoo obvious and Clarke was given his marchingorders by the umpire. This was a primeexample o unsporting behavior at its peak.
The Indian second innings saw the umpiringerrors continue to fow. Dravid was the victimthis time, given out wrongly caught behindwhen the bat was nowhere near the ball. SteveBucknor had struck again. Then a asco took
place. Sourav Ganguly was given out caughtby Michael Clarke o Brett Lee. Replaysshowed that Clarke had picked the ball uprom the ground. Instead o asking the thirdumpire, Mark Benson went to Ricky Ponting(remember he had been dishonest and notwalked when he had nicked the ball) to askor his opinion and Ganguly was given out.Shameul were the scenes at the SCG. Pontingalso later appealed or a catch that he clearlyhad grassed.
With so many moments, the test match wasmarred by poor umpiring and controversy. Inthe end, Australia won the match by 122 runs.Umpire Steve Bucknor was removed rom thenext test by the ICC and rightully so.

One Pitch catches are notallowed in International Cricket
This match is remembered or one o thenest test match innings o all time. SachinTendulkar made a brilliant 136, battlingimmense back pain, the erce Pakistani
bowling attack and the Chennai heat. Pakistaneventully beat India by 12 runs in a nail bitingencounter. They got a standing ovation romthe wonderul Chennai crowd.
Now, or the blunder. The match resultcould have been dierent i common sensehad prevailed between the Umpires or thegame Steve Dunne and V.K. Ramaswamy.Sourav Ganguly, batting in the Indian secondinnings, hit a ball into the legs o the silly
point elder. The ball then hit the ground, ricocheted o it and Moin Khan completedthe catch. What was disheartening to see wasthe unsportsmanlike behavior rom MoinKhan. There was no way that he did not knowthat the ball had not bounced. It happenedright in ront o his eyes. He appealed or acatch rantically. The umpires were unsureand instead o asking the third Umpire, theydeclared Ganguly out ater deliberating ora while. God only knows what they discussed,
but a wrong decision was made that turnedout to be crucial in deciding the result o thematch.
pl it d, pl it igtAs we have seen in the above matches, someunsavory incidents have marred an otherwisewonderul cricket match. I only the playersplay the game within the true Spirit o thesport, and other external actors do not hinderthe games progress, the Gentlemens game
would truly live up to its name.

MULLAI PERIYAR
BYe. n. SeShaDrI KuMar(M. NO. 455)*
NEEDNatioNal WatEr GriDaND Not aNothEr Dam!The Mullai Periyar Dam is situated in Peermadu and Devikulam taluks. Thehistory is that this region was ruled in 12th century by Pandiyas and later by
Cheras with 90% o inhabitants speaking Tamil. The British rulers in Maduraiwrongly considered that these taluks as attached to the erstwhile Travancore
Samasthanam, which later was merged in 1956 with Kerala. Geographicallyplaced to the west o the Western Ghats, State o Kerala receives a copious 3000mm rain annually. There are 44 perennial West-fowing rivers whose majority o
the food waters drains into the Arabian Sea.
There was no problem till 85 years till 1979. It is indeed a sad state o aairsthat good relationship enjoyed by the states o Tamil Nadu and Kerala had been
marred since 1980 and strained urther since a decade due to this issue.
The ront page news in major newspapers(Jan,2012) that the Mullai Periyar (MP)Dam is sae was declared by Mr. K. C Thomas, then Chairman, Central Water Commissionas way back as 16th Oct.79; but two days later
ater his visit to Thiruvananthapuram, heabruptly said it is better to strengthen it!
Saety o this dam was well known to theengineers o both sides especially ateragreement in talks in early 1980s betweenTamil Nadu and Kerala on three-phasedMeasures (immediate, medium and longterm) to be taken until which the heighto storage would be maintained at 136 eet. These measures were ully implemented by
Tamil Nadu.
Being designed as a Gravity Dam, its weightwill counter the water pressure, so that theresultant passes through the Middle third
o the base. As an immediate measure toincrease weight, a 3-eet thick concrete Capalong its 21 eet breath and 1200 eet lengthon top o the dam was caste. This consequentlyincreased the dams weight by 35 tons/
meter or 12000 tons in total. As a medium-term measure, cable-anchoring was done bypre-stressing method: From the top o theDam, 5 eet rom the ront wall, 95 verticalbores spaced at 9 eet were drilled along thedams height and urther up to 30 eet intothe rock at the bottom o the dam. Concretewas poured up to 20 eet into the hole andbunched 34number- 7 inch high-tensile steelrods were pressed into each bore and the gapwas lled with cement mix. As a long-term
measure an RCC backing was also done. A 32eet thick cement-concrete structure coveringthe length o the dam across its height rom 10eet to 145 eet also was cast, covering the Capmentioned earlier.

Modern Civil engineering techniques wereused to integrate this wall to the dam, or itto behave as a single monolithic structure.Drainage galleries were built to monitorleakage and were ound to be much belowthe threshold levels (in act certain minimumleakage is necessary or the health o anydam!). Additional food water gates wereinstalled to increase expulsion o water rom86000 to 1, 22,000 cubic oot per second.
Thus, there is no chance or dam bustingdue to overloading rom foods. The abovemeasures were done rom 1981 to 1994 at acost o around 18 crores. Despite carryingout all these short and long term measures asmutually agreed in 1980 as well as the recentSupreme courts order, Kerala objected toraise the water level to 152 eet!.
The Arch Dam at Idukki was built in 1976,50 KM downstream 1200 eet long and 555
eet high to hold 70 TMC. It is SEVEN timethe capacity o Mullai Periyar dam. For nearlythree years Idukki could not get sucientwater rom catchments or its designedcapacity vis--vis poor generation o electricity. The eyes o Kerala then turned to MullaiPeriyar dam or augmenting more reservoircapacity. I the real problem is Dam saety, ithas been proved beyond doubt that it is saeand will be so or at least a ew decades andthere is no urgent need to build a dam NOW.
The current Western trend is to avoid buildingnew Dams. In the USA some dams have beendecommissioned, where it was possible. Theinormed opinion o Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
(14th Dec 2011, The Hindu) could not havebeen more appropriate and timely thattheinter-state river disputes can only be resolved bya National River Water Gridwhich has beenadvocated by many experts or over pastdecades, as having signicant and multiplebenets.
With the rivers networked through an elevatedcanal, there would no need or Dams! Thus, there will be NO need or any reservoirs orthe associated inundation o orest and otherareas. Also, the displacement o peoplewill be less than 10% in case o the canalas compared to dams(reservoirs). Further, with the potential energy o water stored ata higher level, the potential or hydro-powergeneration and power-saving due to gravityfow is very high; the present installed capacityin India can be doubled! Again, there willbe positive eects on Ecology, environment, fora and auna. It is high time that the Centreand State Governments look seriously intothe implementation o the National RiverGrid (which is possible in segments and stages
requiring only a minimum budget) or anenduring and lasting solution, The results willbe tangible within a decade.
