The next training will be on Sunday 1 July starting at 9am after the radio sched. Prospective new members are welcome to come. The brigade has been quiet this month - no callouts. Neighbouring brigades have been busy with a variety of callouts, from house, car, haystack fires, motor vehicle collisions and power pole fires, to name a few. The brigade held it`s annual wood raffle last month – thank you to all community members who bought tickets to support the brigade. The results were first - Lee Barker, second – John Severyn. The brigade held a dinner at the local shop on Saturday 16 June. It was very well attended by members. Looking at memberships that night, we are a young brigade again, with quite a few enthusiastic members
starting within the last five years. The Officers and BMT are very grateful for their contribution to Anakie Fire Brigade. The two door prizes were won by C.Watts: trailer of wood and D.Tobolov: bunch of flowers (I hope they put Dave into the good books with his partner). The brigade officers have submitted the VESP grant to the region, re proposed works to the station. We are very confident that we will get the money to do the project. We are constantly looking for government grants to better the brigade in any aspect for the future service of the community of Anakie. Fires can happen at ALL times of
the year, in all environments, so be prepared, be safe -

1st Anakie Scout Group report
Winter weather is closing in and our small group is down to seven cubs and upcoming scouts. Ruth has decided to have our tiny group meetings on one night a week, Thursdays from 6.30 – 8pm at Anakie Hall on Staughton Vale Road.
It will still operate during term times as always. Brrr with cold weather here, indoor activities to keep hearts racing and cut down heating costs are all the go!

PS: start piling up your scrap metal - we have a collection day coming over the weekend 10 and 11 November.

Health News & More... echinacea: a group of herbaceous flowering plants in the daisy family. The genus Echinacea has nine species, which are commonly called coneflowers. Extracts of Echinacea do seem to have an effect on the immune system. Research shows it increases the number of white blood cells, which fight infections. A review of more than a dozen studies, published in 2014, found the herbal remedy had a very slight benefit in preventing colds. Note: If you suffer from an auto-immune disease check with your doctor if Echinacea is appropriate for you. dose: up to 1G daily and according to the recommendations on the container; each brand may vary slightly. At the first signs of a cold take 2-3 tablets; you may avoid the cold altogether or at the very least reduce severity of symptoms or days of sickness. You may also want to try Garlic and Vitamin C; both may also be beneficial in treating the symptoms of a head cold. important: if you intend to take supplements of any kind and you already take prescription pharmaceuticals always check first with your GP as some herbal supplements interact with medications. e: [email protected] Ph: 0425 731 295 Be well and create your happiness..!!

Orange Poppy Seed Muffins 1¾ cups (215 grams) SR flour 1 tablespoon castor sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon bicarb soda 1 tablespoon poppy seeds 90 grams butter ½ cup orange marmalade zest of 2 oranges 1 egg, lightly beaten ¾ cup milk icing sugar, to dust Preheat oven to 210. Lightly grease a 12-hole muffin tin. Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder and soda into a mixing bowl. Add the poppy seeds and stir. Make a well in the centre. Combine the butter and marmalade in a small saucepan and stir over low heat until the marmalade becomes runny and the butter melts. Add the butter mixture and combined egg, milk and orange zest to flour mixture; stir until just combined. Do not over mix, the batter should be quite lumpy. Spoon the batter into the tin and cook 10-12 minutes or until golden. Loosen the muffins with a flat-bladed knife and transfer to a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar. Topping idea: beat 60g soft butter, 2 tablespoons icing sugar and 1 teaspoon orange rind until light & creamy. Cut a small section from the top of the muffin, fill with mixture and replace tops. Newspaper pots
1. Lay a sheet of newspaper out flat, then fold it in half lengthwise, twice. 2. Lay a small glass jar at one end of the newspaper strip. Roll up the paper to form a cylinder around the jar, leaving an overlap at the mouth. 3. Fold the overlap into the mouth of the jar, ensuring there are no gaps between the paper folds. Remove the jar, then insert it back into the paper cup base-first and push down to flatten. 4. Remove the jar again, fill your paper pot wit soil and plant with seeds.
