FRAUDULENT MESSAGE

It’s come to the attention of the local NHW that a rather nasty online fraud scam is cir-culating which purports to come from NatWest. The head-ing usually contains the words “Cashback Plus”, a recently introduced benefit where ac-count holders are offered the chance to earn interest on household bill payments. The email has a box to click for you to set up your online de-tails which, when you click on it, asks for your debit card number and date of birth de-tails etc. The web page and email look entirely genuine, but do not follow any of these instructions as it is a fraudulent message! The NatWest Fraud office has confirmed that it is a false site so delete the email from your in box and take no further action. If, by any chance, you have put your details on this site, please let NatWest Fraud office know immediately.

History WalkHistory WalkHistory Walk For the first time as part of the Crosspool Festival we conducted a Guided History Walk Round Crosspool. Proving very successful we were asked if we could repeat the walk in the evening so that people who are at work during the day could come along on Wednesday September 2nd at 6.45 pm. Meet outside St Columba's on Manchester Road. The walk will take approxi-mately one and a half hours and will finish near the Plough on Sandygate Road. Thanks, Jan Millward Lindsey Beagles

Lounge @ Crosspool

The precinct tea and coffee shop has closed for building work, before reopening under new management. Outgoing owner Paula, who set up the cafe in

April 2012, is retiring. She said:“After making 38,000 pots of tea, 20,000 coffees and lots of burnt tea cakes I have sadly hung up my soggy, flour covered apron for good! I have had the best 3-and-a-half years and real-ised my dream. I have learnt so much taking my little sad shop and transforming it into a very successful business that I will always be proud of. I have made some amazing lifelong friends and thank you so much for let-ting me into your lives. Heartfelt thanks. Paula xxx” We’ll miss you, Paula!

Volume 12 Issue 3 Page 3 Chester Zoo Trip

Earlier this year, the Crosspool Fo-rum subsidised a day out for the families of Crosspool to visit Ches-ter Zoo. Transportation was kindly provided by FirstBus. Two young members of the group tell their story of the memorable and a very enjoyable adventure they experienced with their friends.

To Chester Zoo We met at the pub early on Friday morning and waited for a big coach to arrive. It was exciting as loads of my friends and people who I knew from School were there too. I sat next to Isla at first and then moved next to Finlay. The coach was fun. When we arrived at the zoo we all had our photo taken together but then we all went in different directions but that was good as we did all keep bumping into each other.

First we went to see the monkeys, they were all playing and chasing each other, they were very funny. We saw a lot of animals; we saw Giraffes, Lions, Tigers, Bears Orang-utans, Elephants and Zebras. My favourite animals were the otters and penguins.

Before we left we walked through the bat cave it was really dark and lots of bats were flying around - this was really cool but my mom was a bit scared so we had to leave quickly.

When it was time to go we met all of our friends in the shop, we all got something new.

We then got back on the coach and went for tea in a posh hotel. This was great, I had a burger and profiteroles and the best part was all the kids played outside for ages.

It was late when we got back and we were really tired, it had been such a fab day. Bella (aged 7)

The Zoo

We met really early and I was so excited to

go on a coach. The coach was really fun

and I sat next to Erin and we watched

programmes on my iPad.

Everyone who went to Chester Zoo was very

surprised to see how big the zoo was. My

favourite animals were Elephants, Mon-

keys, Giraffes, Bears, Snakes, Penguins

and Zebras. The Giraffes were called

Lillia, Dasher, Amelia (who was a baby)

and Petal. Amelia was cute, but still very

tall compared to me!

When at 4 o’clock we were finished at the

zoo, we went to a hotel for dinner. The

dinner was yummy and when everyone was

finished we all went out into the field in

the grounds of the hotel to play tig!

On the way home my little sister Anna fell

asleep and we got stuck in a traffic jam,

but it was ok as I was sitting next to Erin

again.

The whole day was brilliant, thanks to

the Crosspool Forum & FirstBus!

Historic Marker Post Adopted

A series of information posts has been installed in the Rivelin valley by Rivelin Valley Conservation Group volun-teers, to give visitors an even greater insight into the river’s industrial, natural and artistic heritage. Walkers with smart phones can scan the QR code on each post to unlock photos, videos and information related to each location.

The Crosspool Forum is delighted to have been given the opportunity to sponsor the post that marks “Spooners

Wheel”. Dating from at least 1637, it’s one of the oldest in the valley and was used in the produc-tion of grinding files, saws, fenders, scythes and cutlery. This is the fifth of 20, more can be sponsored at a cost of £200 if anyone is interested.

Crosspool & District Youth Sports Trust

For numerous reasons, and after research,

lengthy negotiations and careful consideration of all the issues involved, the trustees of the

(CDYST), Coldwell Lane, have decided that the proposed laying of a cycle track untenable and,

as a result, will not be progressing any further. They thank everyone who took the time to

respond with their comments about the intend-ed project.

CDYST trustees ask visitors to be vigilant

Trustees at Crosspool & District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST) have noticed that, twice in the

last month, someone has tried to gain access to the mower storage shed around the back by

pulling off the door handle and trying to wedge something in to break open the lock.

They’re asking anyone passing to keep an eye on the Coldwell Lane property – especially

round the back – and report anything suspicious by calling 101 or contacting the trustees.

Among the many readers of the Clarion, I just wonder if there are some who are familiar with the histories of the Plough, the Sportsman and the Crosspool Tavern. For ex-ample, I believe that the very same family were, at one time, involved in the ‘running’ of both the Plough and the Crosspool Tavern and, there again, it is said that several generations of the same family were licensees of the Tav-ern from its opening, as a ‘beer house’, in the early years of the nineteenth century. Can the pubs of those days be described by folk whose ancestors frequented them.. lay-out.. food.. home brewed or bought-in beers, ales… sto-ries, events associated with the two houses? Anything of interest, no matter how insignificant it may seem, will be of interest. Please, give me a ring (230 1032) or do pop round for a chat (please contact the Forum for my address)...I promise to put the kettle on. MARSH LANE: a fascinating

history with links to Saint Luke, Roman conquests,

Sheffield’s one-time grammar school and, yes, even the

Moon itself. Presently being prepared and, hopefully, for

your delectation, to be pub-lished in a couple or so instal-

ments in the Clarion later this year and in 2016

The Plough pub on Sandygate Road has now been listed as an asset of community value. This means that, in the event of it being put up for sale, the group lodging the application would be given time to come up with a bid to buy it. There is no guarantee that this bid would be accepted by the seller. With threat of the pub being sold and turned into a convenience store, a group of regulars have launched an online change.org petition and a paper petition in the pub, that you’re invited to sign. There’s also a Save the Plough Facebook community group which they use to keep everyone up to date. The Plough is one of three remaining pubs in Crosspool and it is believed that a public house has stood on the site for around 400 years. The pub is famously located opposite Hallam FC’s Sandygate stadium, the oldest football ground in the world.

Bullet Points

Cllr’s Geoff Smith & Anne Murphy, PCSOs Gary Hizam & Pam Thompson with guest speakers, Andy Metcalfe (FirstBus) &

Maxine Bowler (Heeley Dev Trust), 8 Forum Management Committee members & 35 Crosspool residents attended.

Ian Hague welcomed everyone & reported briefly on the Crosspool Festival & Summer Fayre. The local History Walk proved so popular it is being repeated on 2nd September. Meet outside St Columba’s

6:45pm. A day-out, organised by the Forum for the families of Crosspool to Chester Zoo May 22nd, went very well.

The Forum has sponsored a Rivelin Conservation Group pole with a QR code (Spooner's Wheel). More are available for sponsorship - cost £200.

Probus Men's Group are looking for new members - meet l0am Thursdays, Stephen Hill Methodist Church. Work starts on a New Rivelin Valley Water Treatment plant later this year - may be some temporary traf-

fic lights/disruption on the Manchester Road - it will be two years before the plant is fully commissioned. COUNCILLOR's Q & As

Anne said there have been meetings with the management of the Claremont Hospital about the ongoing parking problems (staff cars) around Sandygate Park, Carsick Hill Rd & Ivy Park Rd.

Despite having arrangements with the CDYST, Masonic Hall & formerly with Hallam Golf Club, the staff still need more parking. A meeting is to be held 10am Tuesday 4th August. Single yellow lines between 7am

and 10am, and 5pm-7pm & double yellow lines on the comers will shortly be placed on these roads. The present 40mph speed limit on the Manchester Rd entering Crosspool is under discussion; Cllr. Smith

said that there is an online form, on the Council webpages that can be completed. TREASURER'S REPORT

Angela Southward reported that the Festival Week had raised £1300, - Elizabeth Mitchie & Andrea Birch on behalf of Care in Crosspool & Adam Stokes on behalf of Roundabout young people's homeless group,

stepped up to receive a cheque. HEELEY DEVELOPMENT TRUST

Maxine Bowler spoke about the need for Crosspool & Crookes to partner the Trust to become a consorti-um to bid in December for a two year 'pot' of funding from the government. This is the Health & Social

Care Fund, so any ideas on local needs are very welcome. The walking groups, tai-chi & yoga, already taking place, are examples of what can help people. Care in Crosspool & the Crosspool Forum support the

idea and the local GP surgeries are being brought into this as well. ...contd.

FIRST BUS REPORT Andy Metcalfe reported that the no.51 bus route will not be able to run along Sandygate Road during the

week beginning 3rd to 7th August - Amey gave both First Bus & South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE/Travel South Yorkshire) very little notice of Sandygate Road from Coldwell Lane to

Selborne Rd, between 7am to 7pm, being closed to all traffic. Thereby requiring the 51 buses to use an alternative route. (The 273/274 will still run inbound along Benty Lane).

Questions asked from the floor; Disruption/Rerouting may affect the users of the Ryegate Centre? Church Street 51 bus stop, problem with bus drivers sailing past without checking for waiting passen-

gers? Andy to investigate these issues. AMEY REPORT Ian Hague read out a brief update from Claire Tideswell (Amey) – most local street lighting

now completed, any further tree planting will start in November. Crookes & Fulwood Highways work immi-nent.

PCSOs REPORT Gary Hizam & Pam Thompson mentioned the arrest of a team of thieves from Stanning-ton who had been targeting vans. Reminder to residents to lock garages & sheds!

Delays in answering the 101 number - reports can also be filed online. Gary said although Dr. Billings, at our last meeting, said that he was dedicated to retaining the force at its

present numbers, due to a new directive the number of PCSOs, will now have to be reduced from 289 to 250 and that this would impact on the practicality of dedicated neighbourhood teams. It was noted that,

together with the police helicopter, the police horses will be moving to Humberside. EVENTS:

I/ Car boot sale (6th June) went well - it is hoped to run one on 5th September. 2/ Children’s Christmas Disco, date for diary - 6th December. Please contact Steve or Ian to register your

interest, as numbers are limited. 3/ 22nd May, Chester Zoo day out was a great success - it is hoped further community days out can be

organized in the future. 4/ Precinct floral displays are looking good! Big thanks to Geoff & Sandra Cox, and the watering team.

5/ Volunteers wanted for strimming work on the Hagg Copse & the Orchard. 6/ Crosspool Calendar; please send in your photos - especially summer & autumn ones.

AOB: 1/ Gillian Drinkwater said sadly the proposed CDYST mini cycle track was not going ahead - area too small

for the costs involved. 2/ Planning updates, The Plough, now a Community Asset – community will need to find investment &/or

alternative uses. Nothing further is known about the Jet Petrol station or Motor World site. 3/ GT News applied to sell alcohol (with 11pm late opening). Rob (manager) would like people to call in

with suggestions and ideas of other items you would like GT to sell. 4/ Crosspool Person of the Year award: three nominations to date - Keith Kendall, Paula Stacey & Steve

Reynolds, further nominations to Ian Hague by 12th August -

voting slip in the Autumn Cross-pool Clarion.

Tel: 0114 2665950 Reflections on Crosspool Festival 2015

June 26th - July 4th saw our sixth annual festival week take place in Crosspool. On behalf of the Festival committee I’d like to thank everyone who took part in events, organised events and donated so generously to our Festival Charities. Thanks also to the local businesses who so kindly supported and sponsored the event. It was great to be able to donate £650 each to Care in Crosspool, our very own good neighbour charity, and to Roundabout, which has been supporting homeless young people in Sheffield for 38 years. Over the week itself the weather smiled on us and we had the usual rich mix of events celebrating local interests and talent, and giving lots of opportunities for people to come together and enjoy meeting their neighbours. A highlight of this year’s Festival Week was the history walk around Crosspool – people turned out in droves, demonstrating the keen interest people have in our local history and heritage. The history walk brochure, put together by Jan Millward and Lindsey Beagles, owes much to the expertise of local historian Judith Hanson. Copies are still available for £2.50 at Broomhill Library and GT news. The brochure enables you to do your own self-guided history walk around the area. The talk on the Sheffield Blitz, hosted by the much-missed Lounge at Crosspool, was also popular. The street market on Selborne Road is a festival fixture, and the variety of stalls and entertainment on offer give a real buzz of energy to this event. As usual the garden at no 55 provided a green oasis and a great place for a sociable cuppa with a view. Thanks to Chris Bachelor and the team whose seamless organisation makes the market such a success. We’re looking for one or two new people to work alongside Chris in plan-ning the street market for 2016, so if you’d like to learn the ropes, do get in touch. We do hope to reach all age groups in Festival Week. Tapton Congregational Church’s “Crosspool Chocolate Factory” was a sticky-fingered success with the kids, and the scarecrow competition was great fun, and something that we hope to repeat. Moving up the age range, we were pleased that Crookes-based Steve McClure’s absorbing illustrated talk on “A Life Through Rock Climbing” attracted a younger demographic that previous years talks have done! The well-dressing this year celebrated the anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, and the well-dressing launch was given an added blast this year by trombonist and local Methodist Minister Revd Will Fletcher who brought his brass ensemble along with him. At the “Picnic in the Park” service at the close of the week, we enjoyed the Bamford Village Singers with their mix of folk and gospel sounds. They enjoyed coming so hopefully we’ll see them again before long. Our festival is bookended by two well- loved events, the Open Gardens on the first Saturday of Festival Week, and the fabulous Summer Fayre on the following Saturday. Both attracted really good crowds as usual, and Open Gardens was the focus of a double page article in the Sheffield Telegraph, singing the praises of Cross-pool as a great and vibrant place to live. Open Gardens raised 1617.76 this year for local charities – each gardener chooses their own preferred charity. With 29 separate events throughout the week it’s impossible to do justice to them all. A personal favourite of mine this year was the Gala concert at Stephen hill Church with Sheffield Folk Chorale and harpist Ciara Noon. Ciara is a year 9 student at King Edwards School, and plays her own compositions on the celtic harp, which she dedicates to members of her family. I found her playing beautiful and deeply moving. And it was good to welcome people into my own church of St. Columba to experience the contemplative calm of our prayer labyrinth. So another whirlwind festival week is over, and a break now until January when the planning starts again. If you enjoy planning events, or would like to learn how to, you’d be welcome to join us, do get in touch – my contact details are below. Revd Frances Eccleston, Festival Committee Chair. CrosspoolCrosspoolCrosspool As part of the Crosspool Festival “Theme of Joy” scarecrow compe-tition, over 20 households in the neighbourhood took the time and trouble to make and display a scarecrow in their front garden. Thank you and congratulations to everyone who, through their ef-forts, as well as raising a fantastic £66 for the two Lydgate schools, brought so much fun and pleasure to local families and the spotters. Following a torrential thunderstorm in the early hours, it was a murky start to 4th July. As the low cloud and fine drizzle slowly cleared throughout the morning, the CDYST sports field & hall on Coldwell Lane were gradually transformed, by an army of volunteers, into the setting for the Crosspool Fo-rum’s Summer Fayre. The event was officially opened by a lifelong Crosspool lady, Faye Buxton, who earlier this year had moved from Sheffield to be nearer her family. As visitors arrived to enjoy the fifty or so attractions, stalls and entertainment by local Irish dancers, the York-shire Chandelier Clog dancers, Richard Francis Duo and the children’s favourite comedian/magician Barney Baloney, the sun broke through and shone for the whole afternoon. A truly enjoyable day was had by all. The organisers of the Crosspool Summer Fayre, would like to take this opportunity to give a big thanks to everyone who attended the event, the team of dedicated volunteers who helped make the whole event possi-ble, and to all the many sponsors who, through their generosity, helped make this year a resounding success. See you all again next year. In addition to the summer fayre, the Crosspool forum deals with and organises many events throughout the year to promote Community cohesion, such as Open meetings, committee & subcommittee meetings, car boot sale, days out, health & educational classes etc. which as you can appreciate takes a great deal of time and effort to arrange and implement. Ian Hague (chairman) & Steve Reynolds (vice chairman) would be pleased to hear from you if you would like to take an active part in any of our activities.
