Volunteer Spotlight: Cristina Cernaby Robin Clough, Volunteer & Recreation Coordinator

Originally from San Miguel, El Salvador, Cris-tina Cerna came to Santa Clarita to be with her family. They immediately introduced her to the SCV Senior Cen-ter to enjoy fitness classes and other activities. A volun-teer invited her to assist, and Cristina has been volun-teering at 7:45 in the morning ev-ery day for the last eight years!

Food Service Director, Joanna Vallelunga, says, “Cristina is dedicat-ed to helping us set up for our Nutrition Program Services on a daily basis. She ensures that all of the silverware and plates are prepared and assists with the timely prepara-tion of seating for 165 people.”

These tasks and the enormous time commit-ment seem daunting to most, but Cristina raised

eight children so is used to hard work. She en-joys helping others and states, “I really like it here, and I am very willing to help with anything. I have

made many friends and en-joy talking to them and my fellow volunteers. It makes me happy!”

In addition to volun-teering, Cristina has a pas-sion for learning. She is an avid reader and particularly enjoys educational material. Cristina is also the proud grandmother of five grand-children.

Cristina says that the Senior Center feels like her extended family. “My friends are my family here,” she shares. “And my life is better because of the Cen-ter.”

The SCV Senior Center is grateful for Cris-tina’s volunteerism and that she is a part of our family!

You open your mail to find a letter saying you may be able to get help paying for the costs of Medicare. It appears to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) …but is it for real? Here’s what you need to know.

Is this letter a scam? No. Every year in May

and June, SSA sends letters (example below and the full

letters here) to people with Medicare who may be eligible for two money-saving programs that can help them afford their prescriptions and health care costs.

What are these money-saving programs?

Did You Receive a Letter from Social Security? Here’s What You Need to Knowby Brandy Bauer, National Council on Aging

• The Medicare Part D Extra Help pro-gram (also known as the Part D Low Income Sub-sidy, or LIS) helps pay your Part D drug plan pre-mium and saves you money on medications at the pharmacy. If you qualify for Extra Help, you will pay no more than $8.25 for your prescriptions for each drug your plan covers.

• The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) pays your Part B premium each month. It also may help pay for other costs in Medicare, such as your Part B deductible and co-pays at the doctor’s office.

Why did I get this letter?Social Security sent you this letter because

you are enrolled in Medicare and, based on your monthly Social Security benefit, you appear to have an income that qualifies you for these programs.

Getting this letter does not mean you auto-matically qualify for these programs. You still need to fill out an application for each program.

Social Security does not have access to in-formation about your other income and resources, such as any pension or retirement account you may have. If you apply for Extra Help or MSP, you will be asked for more information about your over-all finances.

Where can I get help with an application? To get in-person help with an Extra Help/MSP

application:• Contact your State Health Insurance Assis-

tance Program (SHIP). SHIPs are federally funded Continued on facing page

It’s free, confidential, and can screen you for thou-sands of other benefits programs at the same time.

How do I know if other letters I receive are a scam?

Scammers are known to pose as agents of the federal government. If you receive a letter from Social Security and are not sure if it is real or not, you can verify it by calling 1-800-772-1213. SSA also encourages people to set up an account at My Social Security to be able to check notices and your benefits at any time.

to provide free, objective assistance to people with Medicare and their families. Find your SHIP at www.SHIPTACenter.org or call toll-free 1- 877-839-2675.

• Find out if there’s a Benefits Enrollment Cen-ter: https://www.ncoa.org/map/ncoa-map/ (BEC) near you. BECs help people with Medicare apply for all the programs they may be missing out on. NCOA funds 59 BECs across 31 states.

• You can also ap-ply for Extra Help online through BenefitsCheckUp® website: https://www.ben-efitscheckup.org/medicare-rx-extra-help-application/.

Anne’s CornerJune is often known as the

most popular month for weddings. Related to that comment, following are a few situations that have oc-curred.

Marriage SeminarMany couples have a problem communicat-

ing with one another. One couple went to a Mar-riage Seminar to deal with this problem. Bill and his wife listened to the instructions. “It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.” The speaker addressed the men. “Can you describe your wife’s favorite flower?” Bill leaned over and touched his wife’s arm and gently whispered, “It’s Pillsbury, isn’t it?”

It is not what you think! An elderly gentleman entered a new drug-

store. He handed the druggist a piece of paper and asked if the items were available in the new store. The druggist looked at the paper, which had the following items listed: large bottle of vitamins, heating pad, wheel chair, crutches, folding hospital bed, liniment, sleeping pills, cough medicine, and ear plugs. Curiously the druggist asked if someone in his house was ill or injured.

The gentleman replied, “No.” He said, I am 85 years old and my fiancée is 81. “We plan to get married in a month from now and she wanted to put these items on her bridal registry from your store.”

Depends on how you look at things.Someone stated that “I am” is the shortest

sentence in the English language?Others have said that “I do” is the longest

sentence?Did you know?*There were five flavors of Jell-0 that did not

survive? Celery, coffee, cola, appleand chocolate.*That the color of the tabs on the bread clos-

ing indicate the freshness?Blue, green, red, white and yellow in that order.*If you place a wooden spoon over an open

pot, it will not boil over?*That marshmallows can cure a sore throat?

(Eating them, that is.)

The Language of CowsI recently heard something

that struck me as very strange. At first, I thought it was a joke, but it actually turned out to be quite true. Did you know that English cows speak with different accents de-pending in which part of England they are raised? It appears that

dairy farmers in Somerset have noticed a local twang, and experts have confirmed that different herds make different sounds, one expert in pho-netics states that within a herd, you would en-counter identifiable dialectical variations. Another expert says that the accent may be learned from relatives. I am not sure if the relatives she refers to are related to the cows or to the farmers who are raising the aforementioned cows. It is undeniably true that when humans are learning to speak they adopt a local dialect, that which is spoken by the parents. Could the same be true of cows? Do the mothers and fathers teach their babies to say moo in different dialects? It gives one pause for thought. And one has to wonder if this phenomenon could be brought on by the close association between the farmer and his herd. As one farmer states “I spend a lot of time with my cows and they defi-nitely moo with a Somerset drawl.”

I find this all very fascinating. It makes me wonder if there could be a difference in the way cats and dogs meow and woof. The next time I am in England I intend to make a study of the subject. I will listen closely to the cats and dogs that I en-counter on my visit to ascertain whether or not they sound different from the animals raised in America.

Returning to the subject of bovines, could it be that a cow raised in California would sound different from a cow raised in Texas? It certainly is true that Californians and Texans sound quite different from each other. Could the same be said of cows? If any of you are acquainted with a herd from Texas, could you perhaps check this out?

So now I am going to call my cousin in Eng-land, I shall ask her to put her cat on the phone to speak with my cat Stanley, just to see how well they understand each other.
