Grand Knight’s Report

My Brother Knights,

Vivat Jesus!

As Knights of Columbus, we greet each other with the words, "Vivat Jesus!" These words testify to the fact that we place our faith in a living reality — a reality that makes a difference in the way we live. Furthermore, we dedicate ourselves to the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. It is my privilege to report the efforts of the council have again resulted in Star Council status! This is the third consecutive year we have attained this award and I couldn’t be more proud of the efforts of each and every member.

The month of July is booked up with meetings at the diocesan and district level. Our state and district leadership is laying out the plans for our next fraternal year. I will have more to share at our August business meeting.

The council has three major events planned for August:

On Saturday, August 13 the council will be participating in the community build of the new play structure for the OLS school. This will be an all hands on deck project. For more details, please see the article on page 8, or contact Bill Moylan.

On Thursday, August 18 the council will be again setting up the lawn crosses on the side of the hill at the intersection of Shiawassee and Raphael. Paul Ferrini and Henry Testa will be co chairing the event.

Our annual corn roast will be on Sunday, August 28 at Island Lakes on Kent Lake. Please see Page 9 for more details, or contact Paul Toth.

Fraternally yours,

SK Joe Hejka Grand Knight

Elections

Prayer for Vocations Lord Jesus, you once called the first disciples in order to make them the “Fishers of all men”.

Continue to let resound today Your sweet invitation: “Come and Follow me”, Grant to young men and women the grace of responding promptly to Your voice.

Sustain our bishops, priests and consecrated souls in their apostolic work. Give perseverance to our seminarians and to all those who are fulfilling the ideal of a life of total consecration to Your service.

Enkindle in our communities a missionary zeal. Send Lord, workers into Your fields and do not let mankind be lost because of lack of pastors, missionaries and people dedicated to the cause of the Gospel.

Mary, Mother of the Church, Model of Vocations, help us say “Yes to the Lord Who calls us to collaborate in the divine design of salvation. Amen.

4th DEGREE NEWS St. Francis of Assisi Assembly #2136

Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Faithful Navigator: S.K. Mike Mitchell FN

Sir Knights, Ladies, Family and Friends: Vivat Jesus!!

The last fraternal year went out with a Big Bang! At the end of June we honored our land with a Flag retirement ceremony at the American Legion Post 346.

Several assemblies joined in this event. A fitting tribute to the flag of our country and a grand salute to the American people. We tip our hats off likewise to the men and women of our assembly who worked hard to put this event together. Thanks Color Corps commander Eddie Waldecker for bringing out the best of our Color Corps. Once again the great Henry Testa and Norm Pranger. Their names are synonymous to success. My heartfelt thanks to the officers and members of our assembly, headed by the incoming FN Mike Mitchell. We could not say that our undertakings were successful without their unselfish cooperation. Thumbs up gentlemen.

Our next fraternal year began on July 1st. With the election of our new officers last June, we stand prepared to meet whatever comes our way. We will be celebrating the Pride of our nation. The honored legacy of the great men and women who gave their all that this land so conceived and dedicated to the principles of justice and freedom will always stand as a lasting monument to the American people's love for country and unwavering faith in the Almighty!!

Let us celebrate together and shout with one accord that we will never let our nation be overwhelmed by the forces that seek to destroy us. The world will always have trials and tribulations, but we always stand ready for all these.

And when the dawn of peace and quiet finally comes to us. When the darkness that hovers above us has finally rolled over to the light of the shining sun, let it not be said of us that when trials came we lost our footing and allowed ourselves to be trampled upon. Rather with unwavering Faith and a strong resolve we stood ready to defend our country to the last drop of our blood.

Long Live America!! Sir Knight Fred Arganoza Past Faithful Navigator

Next Meeting Wednesday July 13—OLS Church South Hall

Prayer for the Armed Forces Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad.

Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in their trials and temptations, give them courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pro-Life

Pro-Life Efforts

By St. Francis K of C Knights Needed

I invite you to join me and other Pro-Life Catholics and Brother Knights on Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Northland Family Planning Center located at Evergreen Road just south of 10 Mile.

This is a non-confrontational protest where we recite the Rosary (takes about 20 minutes) and we go out for breakfast after. Remember, a small sacrifice from you today could save the life of an unborn child.

Call our Former District Deputy and Past Grand Knight Bill Mc Keever (313-766-9110) for more information.

Prayer for the Unborn Heavenly Father, You created us in Your own image, and You desire that not even the least among us should perish.

In Your love for us, You entrusted Your only Son to the Holy Virgin Mary.

Now in Your love, protect against the wickedness of the devil, those little ones to whom You have given the gift of life.

I ask that you help Another Way Pregnancy Center reach those considering abortion, and by Your Grace, changing their hearts and

Monastery Project—In the News Through the efforts of Tom Rancour and Keith DeVore, look for the following write-up that will appear in the July web update (http://www.kofc.org/un/en/knights-in-action/index.html#/) and eventually in Columbia magazine. Charles Bugelli (foreground) of Father Arnold Kosco Council 12808 in West Bloomfield, Mich., and Alex Franz and Geoff Downer (on ladders) of St. Francis Council 4401 in Farmington apply paint at the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Farmington Hills. 31 Knights from seven Detroit-area councils united to prepare, prime and paint an outdoor breezeway for the cloistered Dominican sisters of the monastery, whose mission includes continual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, daily liturgy and contemplative prayer. Several councils donated a total of $1,200 for paint and supplies, and the service project involved an estimated 400 volunteer hours during April and May.

The New OLS PLAYGROUND Project is a GO! The 2016 PTG Auction, held on April 30, 2016, proved lucky for the OLS School. Under the theme of “Roaring 20’s: An Evening of Glitz,” the event raised 95% of the $100,000 goal for the new OLS Playground project. The PTG’s ambitious goal to replace the aging playground equipment will benefit our children in many ways:

• Improved Safety • Fun Engaging Activities for Sensory, Balance & Motor Skills • Active Problem Solving • Stronger Cognitive Development • Better Core Strength, Concentration & Visual Tracking • Activities That Engage Older Children • And Much Much More!! In early May, the PTG successfully negotiated with Penchura, the playground equipment manufacturer, and Michigan Recreational Construction [MRC], the installer, to make up the difference. Craig Sheffer of MRC gave OLS a $3,000 price reduction and agreed to unload the equipment from the freight trucks when it arrives at no charge. Lance Shipman of Pechura advised the OLS-PTG about a program called HGACbuy.com, which is a purchasing co-op. Membership in HGAC will give the OLS school lots of opportunity for discounts on items. Most importantly, it gives 8% off the playground equipment. With these concessions, the awesome news is that OLS School has 100% funding for all equipment except the pre-school structure.

On May 31, 2016, the Parish Finance Council approved the playground project at their monthly meeting. On June 22, final approval was granted by the Archdiocese of Detroit.

In July, MRC will start the removal of the old playground equipment and prepare the site. In early August, the initial installation of the major structures will begin. The Community Build portion by the OLS-Knights of Columbus and friends is scheduled for Saturday August 13, 2016. Watch for more details.

Member Recommended Destination—K of C Museum Joe Gromola recently visited the Knights of Columbus Museum, in New Haven Connecticut. Joe was impressed with the museum, which serves the educational interests of the general public through periodic exhibitions of artwork and related content. He put together a short slide show at: http://www.photosnack.com/joegrom/knightsofcolumbusmuseum.html#sthash.Mi4OJl7b

The museum was established in 1982, in the same city where the Knights of Columbus was founded 100 years earlier in 1882. It also serves as an archive, repository, and gallery for documents and artifacts pertaining to the Catholic fraternal organization’s foundation, history and activities.

The museum offers free parking and free admission, and is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If your summer travels bring you close by, more information can be found online at http://www.kofcmuseum.org/en//index.html

Family Prayers

A Family Prayer Composed by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family.

Enlighten our hearts and minds that we may live more fully this vocation of love. In our daily life and work, may we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son and the Holy Spirit. Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home and in the faith we profess and live.

May our family always be a place of generosity, understanding, forgiveness and joy. Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be witnesses to your eternal design for the family; and grant that the Holy Family of Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a fam-ily. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

A Prayer for Every Family on Earth Composed by St. John Paul II

Lord, from you every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. Father, you are Love and Life. Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, born of woman, and through the Holy Spirit, the fountain of divine charity, grant that every family on earth may become for each successive generation a true shrine of life and love. Grant that your grace may guide the thoughts and actions of husbands and wives for the good of their families and of all the families of the world.

Grant that the young may find in the family solid support for their human dignity and for their growth in truth and love. Grant that love, strengthened by the grace of the sacrament of Marriage, may prove mightier than all the weaknesses and trials through which our families sometimes pass.

Through the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that the Church may fruitfully carry out her worldwide mission in the family and through the family.

We ask this of you, who are Life, Truth, and Love with the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen

July Theme Because God is the Father of orphans and widows, we want to reach out to all those who are lonely and abandoned.

God takes care of us; he is our guardian. The psalmist declares him to be the "Father of orphans and defender of widows" (Ps 68:6), a title significant in the ancient world, when orphans and widows were considered the weakest elements of society. Without parents or a husband to take care of them, they were defenseless.

God does not leave us defenseless. Instead, he cares for us by sending us Jesus Christ, his only Son. Like the Good Samaritan, Jesus was especially close to the sick, hungry, lonely and poor. Through his actions toward those in need, Jesus provides the answer to Cain's question: "Am I my brother's keeper?" (Gen 4:9). No matter how lonely, depressed, ostracized or angered are those in our communities and families, God has entrusted each of them to us. We are truly our "brother's keeper."

July Meditations From an address of Pope Francis given on Dec. 29, 2013.

Jesus wanted to belong to a family who experienced these hardships, so that no one would feel excluded from the loving closeness of God. The flight into Egypt caused by Herod's threat shows us that God is present where man is in danger, where man is suffering, where he is fleeing, where he experiences rejection and abandonment; but God is also present where man dreams, where he hopes to return in freedom ... It is an example that does our families great good, helping them increasingly to become communities of love and reconciliation, in which tenderness, mutual help and mutual forgiveness is experienced. 1. How is our family rich in companionship? How can we

reach out to those we know who lack the love of a close family?

2. Do material things and busy schedules isolate members of our family, perhaps excluding a parent, spouse, child or sibling? Is there a way to ensure that those in our family do not feel alone?

Do the elderly in our family feel lonely? What are some ways we could make them feel more included in the family's love?

Scripture Reading of the Month Isaiah 58: 6-9

The sacrifices and fasting we offer to the Lord lead to many blessings

Is this not, rather, the fast that I choose: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking off every yoke? Is it not sharing your bread with the hungry, bringing the afflicted and the homeless into your house;

Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: "Here I am!"

“A Family Fully Alive”

Building the Domestic Church—May Theme

Family Project Like the Good Samaritan, we are called to live out the corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick and the imprisoned, and burying the dead.

Ask each family member to help create a list of ways that your family might help the poor, the lonely and those in need. Once a month, dedicate time to such a person by making them dinner, assisting them with projects around their home, offering your prayers and support, or simply providing them company.

Even our own family members, relatives, friends and neighbors may be alone, needy or new to your parish or school. Extend an invitation to your home for dinner, and ask each of your family members to help prepare for the meal in some way.

Benefits

Only Having Insurance “Through Work” Doesn’t Work Do you know anyone whose life or career has drastically changed during these years of economic downturn? It’s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could change employers, or even lose your job.

Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary. But only having “through work” insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family’s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short.

In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive.

While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I’ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know exactly where you stand.
