Summer New Member Class The next New Member Class series

begins July 10! Mark your calendars now and plan to join us Sunday mornings during the Sunday School hour (10:40-11:20am) for the

5-session class ending August 7th. Can’t attend all 5 classes? No problem.

Indicate the Sundays you will be absent when you register, and we’ll be sure to get the corresponding class information to you.

Classes are designed to help you meet other new members, discover ways you can get

involved in the life of the church, and become familiar with some of the history and core beliefs of the United Methodist Church.

Classes run concurrent with Children’s Sunday School and Nursery childcare.

For questions or registration, call the church

office (614)885-5365, or email Pastor John

Girard, [email protected]

Trifles ’n Treasures Save the Date:

Do you have any household items you no longer need? Stop, don’t throw those treasures away! If you put those clean, gently-used items aside, we can sell them at the annual UMW church rummage sale this fall. So mark your calendars with the sale date, which will be the weekend of October 15th, and we will begin accepting donations on Sunday, October 9th. Please keep in mind that we cannot accept large fitness equipment, computers, non-cable ready TVs, adult clothing & shoes. However, we will accept children’s clothing up to size 4T (small hangers for children’s clothing would also be greatly appreciated). Many volunteers will be needed to make the sale a success, so please consider lending a helping hand or two! If you are interested in joining the planning committee or have any questions, please contact Cindy Ryan.

We are at the close of the Capital Campaign and we approach it with gratitude. We are

grateful to those who gave so generously with their time and with their financial support. Through that generosity we enhanced the sanctuary experience, increased accessibility,

addressed maintenance and infrastructure issues, and created new spaces for ministries.

Walk through the building and note the new lighting, the improved kitchen equipment in South Fellowship Hall, two nurseries that are in use by our tiniest visitors on Sundays

and filled with Creative Play Center babies during the week. Go to the Commons and see how that space is now attractive and useful. Oh, did you forget to note the new van in the parking lot and the screen and projector system in the sanctuary? Other major

efforts are not immediately visible such as the new HVAC, coverings for the stained glass windows, and brick, mortar and plaster repairs.

We have achieved 100% of the campaign pledge amount of $1,187,379. We thank everyone who has given abundantly and a special thanks to those who continue to give to the campaign. There also are committed funds that will come in the future. When we

close out the capital campaign, the future gifts and remaining campaign funds will be converted to the Building Fund which is used by the Trustees for facility needs. So please be assured that all campaign gifts have been and will be used for capital enhancements.

Your generosity coupled with the countless hours of volunteer work and careful oversight have come together to complete a successful campaign which will help WUMC share the

love of God. In gratitude,

The Messenger, July 2016 - Worthington UMC

Several years ago our church worked with CRIS (Community Refugee and Immigration Services) in sponsoring and assisting a refugee family move to Columbus. I believe we did this for 3 or 4 years. I would like to report on one of the families I worked with and what they are doing now. It was almost 6 years ago that our volunteer group assisted Samir Rahim, his wife and 5 children, move into the USA after fleeing Iraq and living in Syria for 2 years. Our volunteers spent countless hours in setting them up in their new home (a small apartment), showing them around Columbus, drivers training, etc. We became friends. After they were settled they invited us into their home for dinner. We had the family into our home. After 1 year they bought a house. They had another child. The second oldest and the only boy , Mustafa, was 12 years old at the time. He expressed a great interest in going to school and said he wanted to be a doctor. He shared his initial school papers and was so proud of his work. After some time, they became better adapted to living here and more independent. Other than Facebook, we lost contact with them until last week, It had been almost 2 1/2 years. Samir called and invited us to Mustafa's High School's graduation. We said we would be honored and would attend. Mustafa himself delivered the tickets to us. The graduation was to be held at the Columbus Convention Center. He was so proud, and told us he received a scholarship to The Ohio State University and wants to be a neuro-surgeon. He then informed us that he was a Valedictorian of his class. He also expressed that he was forever grateful for our assistance to him and his family during their very tough times. My wife and I, along with John & Carol Wolters and Ed Shaffer, attended the ceremony. We were all excited to see the family once again. The oldest of the 5 girls, Ghofran, graduated from high school last year and attends Columbus State. I believe there was some debate about our church continuing to work with the refugees families through CRIS and we moved in a different direction with some of our mission work. However, I believe we were doing God’s work at the time and that it was not in vain. I would hope somehow our church membership could be informed of the result of our Church's effort. "A displaced family in trouble and now a happy and productive family in our Columbus community" Best regards, Larry Mottice

Sunday Morning Schedule Review You may be hearing over the next several months about Sunday morning. Lots of things happen on any given Sunday, including worship, Sunday School, coffee hour and choir, to name just a few. There will be a core group that will be meeting soon to discuss how our current schedule is working and if there are changes that will give greater opportunities to a greater number of people. Watch for the chance to give your input later this summer. Ann Wheat, facilitator
