This is the parish website. It hosts pages for events, societies, community links and Parish Council news . You can post local upcoming events on the parish website www.stogursey-online.uk

Stogursey News is posted every month on the website - useful if the delivery of your paper copy is

Stogursey News This is an independent voluntary initiative. It is printed free of charge as a contribution to the community by Hinkley Point B (EdF).

The News offers an extra page monthly for the use of Hinkley Point C (EdF) to keep local residents well-informed.

Editorial This edition celebrates the awards received by members of our community in recognition of their contributions to the Parish. Congratulations to Mike Maddison, to the Stagecoach Team, to the Stogursey Well Employment Hub, and of course, to Allan Searle. As an Editorial team we appreciate that people need information in good time to make choices about which activities or meetings they would like to attend. We do our best to ensure that Stogursey News is available for delivery by the beginning of the month. Sometimes (as happened last month) there is a problem with the actual printing of the magazine and there are delays. We are sorry about this but we continue to be grateful to EdF for providing the News free of charge.

The Editorial team will miss the contribution made by Aubrey Knowles. Aubrey was one of the first to volunteer when the present team took over and his support for it was constant during his time in Shurton. We send our best wishes to Aubrey and Sally on their move but we will miss them.

Many people will have benefitted from the painting and decorating that Evan Marnell did around the village. Evan died at the end of May and there will be a tribute to him in next month’s edition. We remember Fran and Evan’s family especially at this time.

There have been some sad times this year already but reading the comments made by the children about their time at Kilve Court provides a wonderful balance.

Enoy the Summer.

Thank you

We just wanted to say thank you to everyone who came to the celebration service for Caroline Farrimond at St Andrew’s Church on Saturday 20th May.

The bells rang out welcoming everyone to a full church, and the many colourful and scented flowers created a cheerful atmosphere.

Bishop George caught the right mood of celebration with his address and the bolstered choir raised the roof with the hymns.

Caroline was able to plan much of the service and we are sure that she would have approved.

We know that some of you could not make the service, but have supported us in other ways. The donations to the hospice has raised over £700 and we are sure that they will make good use of this money in supporting others, just as they did Caroline. Paul, Victoria and Edward

DAMAGED CAR

Could I please make a plea for drivers to slow down and take more care as they drive through Stogursey High St.

Sometime overnight during the 6th/7th June my car, which was parked on the road, was damaged by a white vehicle resulting in significant scratches and a dent.

No one bothered to stop and leave their details so I am left with having to pick up the repair bill.

We now have more vehicles than ever using the High St at all times of day and night. Many of us don’t have driveways or garages to park our cars and have no other option but to leave them parked on the road. The High St is narrow in places and care needs to be taken, particularly if you are driving a larger vehicle than a car.

And if the person who hit my car, is reading this and has found their conscience, please feel free to contact me.

Stogursey Flower Show Saturday July 25th Not long now until the Flower Show and I hope that plenty of people are feeling inspired to have a go this year.

The schedules are ready to be collected from the Post Office, the Corner Shop, the Greyhound Inn or the Babbling Brook. The children will all receive one from the school.

It’s a great day out for the family including a Car Boot Sale in the field, refreshments and various stalls.

Stogursey Band will be playing from the start of the show at 2.00pm. See you there

Fiona

Thank you Aubrey Aubrey Knowles has moved to be nearer his family.

Whilst he was in Shurton, he was a founder member of the Stogursey Oral History Project, and as well as conducting many of the interviews, he used the transcripts to produce the book, “Stogursey Voices”.

Aubrey was also part of Stogursey News’ Editorial Team. His monthly contributions, “We will remember them,” commemorating those of Stogursey Parish killed in WWI, were written after extensive research.

We wish Aubrey and Sally all the best in their new home near Gloucester.

50/50 AUCTION We are delighted that so many people from the village are pleased that the 50/50 auction is returning after a year’s absence. We can confirm that the auction will be held in the Victory Hall on the afternoon of Saturday, 9th September.

Information regarding the delivery of items to the Victory Hall and the collection of large items is in the process of being finalised. Full details should be ready in time for publication of the August issue of the Stogursey News. St Peter's Church, Stolford There will be an open meeting to discuss the future role of St Peter's in and for the Stolford community at 7.30pm on 11th July in the church. All welcome. Stogursey Arts Festival 2017

What I found does the most good is just to get into a taxi and go to Tiffany's. Truman Capote: from a short novel and three stories - Breakfast at Tiffany’s

If you didn’t manage to get a ‘taxi’ or even a ‘limited edition’ ticket to our sell out fundraiser, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, it was a huge success: great food, lots of fun, good company and an excellent atmosphere.

Many thanks to Carole and David Balston, who hosted the themed, ‘masked’ event in their fabulous home. In addition to the cooking and entertainment, there were some excellent raffle prizes with lucky winners walking away with gourmet delights, such as jars of Audrey Heartburn’s pickled Jalapenos and some dry and spicy George Peppard corns!

Seeking opinions on access and use of the Dog Pound, Lynn O’Driscoll and her team have collected many more great ideas, to add to those originally suggested by the SAF team. They range from pop-up shops, plant sales, pet shows and Tai Chi to dog training! We now have over fifty households’ responses to the village-wide survey; all respondents felt access via the Dog Pound to the Church Rooms was an excellent idea and should be reconsidered. It was good to read the Parish Council’s information on access to the Dog Pound last month. So, given these wider soundings, we are going

to compile a report and add to it via the suggestion box in the Post Office. Do send us your ideas.

We are currently working with the PCC on changes to the Church Rooms enabling us to start up a film club. We hope to open the film club during this year’s festival, premiering a film by Richard Tomlinson, who some of you will remember worked with Stogursey School to make the Church Projections in 2016. The film is being made for a major retrospective of Hans Schwarz, the portrait artist who lived our village from 1964 until his death in 2004. The film will feature some local Stogursey residents and will be on display with Schwarz’s work at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton.

We have had a lot of requests to repeat our drawing day at Fairfield House, so by popular demand we are planning another day on the 15th of July. All abilities welcome, tutoring is on hand if you need it.

If you would like to find out more, look at Stogursey Arts Festival Facebook site or contact Tim Kaye on 734550. Leave your contact details and we will add you to our mailing list.

The Stogursey Arts Festival will run from the 11th to the 15th of October 2017

WI NEWS

At the June meeting, WI members learned about the history of our local area of Bridgwater through anecdotes of the "Worthy and not so Worthy" characters living in and around Stoke de Courcey, related to us by Mr Chris Sidaway.

With the aid of slides highlighting the local historic buildings such as Doddington Hall, Chris gave a very informative and amusing talk explaining the origins of local village names.

Although we were few in number, the business part of the June meeting was very constructive:

A date for the Summer outing to WILLOWS AND WETLANDS CENTRE at Stoke Gregory was set for August 30th, where those attending will enjoy a cream tea.

There is a tea party planned for the under 5's of the village on September 29th to be held in the skittle alley at the Greyhound.

Volunteers are required to help with the stall at the Flower Show on July 29th. If you have any items that you think would be suitable to add to a large hamper for the main raffle prize, please let Linda Brown have them or bring along to the July meeting.

The theme of the meeting on July 12th is BAKING AND CAKE EATING. This will be held at Yellow Door Cottage, Shurton. You are asked to bring along a cake of your choice for others to sample.

Reminder: The August 9th meeting will take place at Jarvis House in the form of a croquet afternoon (weather permitting). Competition will be to wear a floral arrangement of some form (corsage/ hair ornament etc).

Abseiling “My favourite activity was abseiling.”

Ruby

“I loved abseiling.” Stephanie

“When we wanted to come down, the man would come to us one at a time and let us lean back and walk or climb down. There’s another thing, Miss Glenister walking down the abseiling tower.”

Lily

Archery “My favourite activity was archery. It was really cool. We learnt how to bend a bow. They had left-handed and right-handed bows. I hit the target a few times.”

Ace

“My favourite activity was Archery. 100% it was the best. I was excited about it so much and it inspired me to start an archery club. What you had to do looked easy, but it was harder than it looked for some. It was the best experience in my life, I really hope to do it again.”

Residential at Kilve Court Just before the half-term break, the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils spent three days at Kilve Court.

Having had half-term to recover from their action-packed residential, the pupils wrote about their favourite activities. They shared their memories with the rest of the school in Assembly.

“Hinkley Point”

“Hinkley C Station”

“They give us energy” . . . “Electric” “Hinkley Point has lots of electric.” “The workers, they work.” “When they are working they have yellow stuff on.”

“Hinkley Point has loads of things.”

“We built things with lego.”

“We built Hinkley Point.”

“We made tractors and lorries.”

“and I made a truck, a dumper truck.”

Box-of-delights day The first day back after the half-term holiday was ‘box of delights’ day for all the classes.

The children from Oak Class (Reception and Year 1 pupils) talked about their day. Inside their box, “there was a sign.” It was a radioactive symbol, and so the class spent the day thinking about . . .

Mrs Barnes is hoping that all the school pupils will be able to visit the Power Station to see how the new build is progressing.

Thank-you to Cara, Harry, Jayden, Olivia, Riley, Toby, Sky and Winter-Rose for telling us about their day

Bear hunts in the forest! News from the Pre-School

Tucked into one corner of the garden, the forest (or jungle) with its paths winding between small trees and shrubs is an exciting place for the Pre-school children.

They have been enjoying this outdoor space for several weeks now. (Thank you parents, for coming into school and clearing and making the paths.)

As well as playing chase and going on bear hunts, the children have collected sticks to make a bug house for the insects who live in their forest.

Other Activities and Events

Forest School: During the Summer Term, every class will be spending one afternoon a week in the school field. Wellingtons and waterproofs needed on rainy days!

Charity Bike Day: on 16th June the children brought bikes, scooters and helmets to school and raised £93.10 for Asthma UK.

Bush Craft “My favourite part of Kilve Court was the Bush Craft because you get to build a fire and roast marshmallows . . .”

James

“. . . and drink a nice cup of hot chocolate.” Dylan

Climbing “My absolute favourite activity was the climbing wall. I’ve always enjoyed watching people climb buildings. When I say watching I mean on the Internet. So when I first realised that climbing walls existed, I felt like crying (with happiness). My first glance at the climbing wall, I was overjoyed.”

Matthew

“The climbing wall was really high, fun but really difficult. But I liked climbing because I felt scared but I faced my fears and tried. I tried my best. I thought it was fun because I challenged my fear.”

Kayla

“My favourite activity at Kilve Court was the climbing wall because it was absolutely amazing! I just adore climbing, perhaps one day I shall be an expert.”

Max

“My favourite part was the climbing wall, because I said that I don’t think I will reach the

top and suddenly I reached the top of it. That day I was so happy.”

Ben

“On the climbing wall you need to help the person on the wall get up by tightening their harness. What made me happy was that Ben said to me that he would never get to the top, but when it was his turn to climb, he got straight to the top.”

Jimi

Grass Sledging “My favourite was grass sledging, because we sat in a big sledge, and it had little caterpillar tracks.”

Dylan K

Quantock Walk/Den Building “My favourite memory has to be the Quantock den building. I loved it as we had a nice long walk and chat on the way up to Smiths Combe, then built our dens. We had a whole 40 minutes to build a den.”

“Kilve Court was amazing.” Sidney

Co-op Local Community Fund and WSAB As you may have seen in the National Press, the latest Co-op Local Community Fund is now open, which means that every time members buy Coop branded products and services, 1% of their spend can go to a local cause of their choosing.

For the next 6 months, the West Somerset Advice Bureau will be part of the Fund and will be supported by all Co-op food stores and funeral homes. If you would like to help us, please go to the Co-op member centre and identify us as your charity.

Stogursey OnLine Website – Volunteer Wanted The Stogursey Online parish website team are looking for a volunteer to assist with the redesign of the website. If you think you may be able to help, please contact the team using the ‘Contact Us’ button on the website.

The 1% of what you spend on Co-op branded products will help us make improvements to the WSAB building which is in dire need of refurbishment. Staff at the Bureau work in an old Victorian fire station in Minehead which needs ongoing TLC, and improvements are long overdue. Coop funds will enable us to make private rooms, provide facilities for Universal Credit applicants, maximise the cramped working space that we have and allow people to be seen more quickly. Our preventative advice services help people to avert a crisis, improve living conditions and support the health and well-being of families. Over the last year, we helped 3,500 households including nearly £1.5 million of debt advice and increasing local incomes by £742,057.

I was in the library the other day, and a lady passed on this very interesting piece of information which I’d like to share with you: If you get certain benefits, including Pension Credit and Universal Credit, BT offer a low cost package called BT Basic – it’s about £5 per month, or £10 a month for phone and broadband. It is mentioned in the small print on the back of your phone bill. If you qualify, you can ring 0800 800 864 Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm to get the simple one page application form. You will need to give some information, date of birth and national insurance number to check your eligibility. Libraries are wonderful places - not only for borrowing books, or learning about BT Basic, see above! Many of them have events going on, or clubs you can join. But what happens if you are no longer able to get out and go to the library? The Home Library Service could be the answer. It’s for anyone of any age who is unable to visit their local library, specifically people who are not able to get out for whatever reason: through illness, lack of mobility or caring for someone.

The Royal Voluntary Service will arrange for a volunteer to visit to talk about what you like to read and how often you

would like them to call (usually fortnightly or monthly).

The volunteer will then arrange to go to the library to choose your books and deliver them to you.

Volunteers can also support you to access ebooks through the LibrariesWest Website. There are also talking books and DVDs, If you are blind, partially sighted, dyslexic, or unable to hold printed books, you can borrow talking books free of charge.

If you know someone who is willing to visit the library for you, they can register as a 'good neighbour' and arrange to choose and collect your books for you.

If you would like more information about the Home Library Service or to find out how you can become a ‘Good Neighbour’ please contact your local library on 0300 123 2224.

If you are finding life a bit hard going at the moment, I may be able to help. Please phone me: Izzy Silvester your village agent, on 07931 018045, leave me your name and number and I will ring you back. Or email me on [email protected]. I do only work part-time, so it may take a day or two for me to return your call. Thank you.

Presentation by Peter Montague, Closure Director, Hinkley Point Site A Peter Montague gave a very interesting and thorough overview of the site, going back to basics of how the station operated. He explained – with the use of some interesting props! – what waste they have and how it was generated, as well as some general information on what types of waste there are within the industry. He covered the sites past achievements and their future plans – short, medium and long term. Peter explained how different wastes on the A site are processed, and what the plans are for storage of this waste. A purpose built store - an Interim Storage Facility (ISF) will be built for storing Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) until a national repository is available. The parish council are specifically interested in the planning application to move the encapsulation plant from its original planned location. Peter explained what the encapsulation plant is (a facility to grout (encapsulate) waste into concrete boxes), and how it fits into their plans in relation to the ISF.

Lengths-man Scheme You may have seen the parish Lengthsman working around the parish over the past few weeks. The parish council are grateful to Mark Lewis at EdF for his assistance with securing funding for the provision of a Lengthsman for the next five years. Services are being agreed with Greenslades for this coming year.

Annual Accounts and Annual External Audit to 31.3.17 The Annual Accounts and Annual External Audit Return were approved by the parish council. We are very grateful to Eileen Chave for carrying out the internal audit of the parish accounts. Parishioners are invited to examine the accounts and Audit Return as per the statutory notice which will be placed on the notice boards, from 25 June 2017 until 4 August 2017. The information will also be placed on the Stogursey Online Website.

S106 funding – Recreational facilities in or around Burgage Road Three applications to the fund are ongoing. To complete the tarmac path from the back of the houses from Vicarage Road to the path from Burgage Road, leading to the play area; to provide picnic tables/benches in the play area and to provide toddler friendly play equipment.

West Somerset Volunteer Nominations As part of the National Volunteers week (1 – 7 June 17), the West Somerset Volunteer of the year awards were held on Friday 9 June. In recognition of their contribution to the local community, Nomination Certificates were presented to

Stogursey Parish Stagecoach and The Stogursey Employment Hub. Mike Maddison was presented with a Highly Commended Nomination Certificate. Our congratulations and thanks go to them all for the tremendous work they carry out in the parish.

Enhancements The boxes on the gravel have been planted up with new plants and bulbs– I’m sure you’ll agree they certainly enhance the area. Our thanks go to Chris and Jan Ford for overseeing the planting and for their regular maintenance and watering of the boxes.

The Dog Pound The Dog Pound is constantly available all year round, for use by any individual or group for all sorts of activities. Applications for its hire should be made in writing to the Parish Council. The council is currently sourcing permanent storage for the flag poles and salt.

THE NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING WILL BE ON TUESDAY 11 JULY 2017

I look forward to hearing from you on any issues you wish to discuss. My phone number is 01278 653824 or you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Gillian Orchard, Clerk to the Parish Council.

S106 FUNDING – RECREATIONAL FACILITY There has been little interest or response to the Parish Council suggestions for using the funding for an adult outdoor exercise facility. The funding is now available, because the affordable housing element has been delivered on site by Rosebourne Homes Ltd. However items that the money can be used for is limited – this S106 funding can be used to provide capital expenditure on, or improvements to, items or a facility for, recreational use which is available to the residents of Burgage Road. If the facility cannot reasonably be sited in the Burgage Road area, then it has to be in a location that the ALL residents can access easily on an everyday basis. Parishioners, individually or as community groups are invited to provide ideas and/or suggestions for the funds.

These are Police matters, and the Police need our help to stop them. The number of complaints made from an area are noted. The more complaints received, the more justification to allocate police time and manpower to deal with problems. Complainants’ names are not released to the perpetrators.
