Application of Virtual Instruments in Data

Monitoring & Logging

Abstract Data Acquisition is the process of real world physical conditions and conversion of the

resulting samples into digital numeric values that can be manipulated by a computer.

This system is used to measure various parameters in the industry such as pressure, temperature of plant, control room temperature, combustible gas level, humidity,

weight of the product, etc. This paper shows a cost effective way to design and develop

LabView based Data Acquisition System. Here, 8051 microcontroller is used as an intermediate controller to scan each channel & send data to LabView via RS-232. The

parameter readings are also stored in Excel file as well as EEPROM for further analysis. Virtual Instruments like LabView, can decrease development time to a great

extent, can be integrated to physical world very easily and is very user friendly.

Cold Light Source for Endoscopy using AVR

Microcontroller

Abstract An endoscopy involves the procedure of examining internal organs of the human body

using endoscope. Presently, during endoscopy halogentype or xenon type light sources

are used. The main drawback of these sources is the heat dissipated by them effects the sensor data. Due to high temperature in the surrounding environment, the video tube

or optical fiber used to transfer data may be damaged. Moreover if the lamp turns off

during operation, one cannot change it immediately because of its high temperature.

Thus the redundancy of the system is less. In order to overcome these limitations the

halogen and the xenon light are replace by LED which is a cold light source. Since the LED is operated on DC source, the driver circuit would replace the bulky transformers

used to operate halogen/xenon lamps. This reduces the weightand cost of the equipment. LED has longer life and it provides the better efficiency compared to the

former devices. It also eliminates the use of cooling fan which is used for heat sinking

purpose. In the proposed instrument, intensity of LED light and its life will be displayed with the use of micro controller.

Fuzzy Logic and Energy Model based Speed and Direct

Torque Control of SVPWM Inverter Fed Induction Motor

Abstract This paper presents speed and direct torque controllers based on fuzzy logic for a space-vector modulated pulse width modulated inverter fed induction motor. The direct torque

control has been designed by decoupling the torque and flux based on the energy model

of induction motor. The designed direct torque control system can be accomplished by using constant switching frequency with space vector modulated pulse-width modulated

inverter. In order to control the speed of induction motor conventional PI controller has

been used in industrial applications due to its simplicity. Traditional PI controller does not meet the requirement (such as minimize the overshoot, steady-state error, robustness

under the variation of load disturbance and parameters) for high performance induction motor. In this paper two fuzzy logic controllers are developed to control the torque and

speed of an induction motor. The fuzzy logic controllers are designed using the energy

model of induction motor. The drive is simulated successfully using Matlab/Simulink to verify the performance of designed fuzzy-logic controllers. The performance of the drive

has been examined under various working conditions. The simulation results show that

the proposed fuzzy logic controllers work satisfactorily making the drive more suitable

for high performance applications.

Automation of Heat Exchanger System

using DCS

Abstract Heat exchangers are built for efficient transferring heat from one fluid to another. They have an extensive demand in areas such as petroleum, refineries, chemical plants, petro-

chemical plants, natural gas processing, refrigeration, power plants, air conditioning, space heating and process industry. Automation of Heat exchange can be done optimally

using PID Block. Using PID function block the outlet fluid temperature can be maintained

as desired. The automation of Shell and tube type heat exchanger using Distributed Con-trol System (DCS) is represented in this research paper. Automation is done using PID

block in DCS. The input to PID block is measured variable (temperature of Inlet water) and the set point is desired value of the Outlet water temperature. The manipulated vari-

able is the steam flow rate. As per the changes in the process temperature and the settings

of P action, I action and D action, the output of the PID block is calculated and the steam valve opening is varied to maintain the water temperature. The values for proportional

gain, integration time and derivative time are adjusted to optimize process performance.
