Plywood is an extremely versatile material. It can be used for virtually every building application, from boat construction to decorating, even in the most demanding technological environments.

The Joubert Group has been able to take advantage of the mechanical specifications and natural beauty of this material. Our products are manufactured using only the most meticulously selected woods (Okoume, Sapelli and Igaganga). Each stage of the production process is quality controlled at the highest level, meeting optimal international quality standards.

Our quality and attention to detail is symbolized by our ability to produce exceptional products, perfectly adapted to every industrial need. The outstanding quality of Joubert’s products is marked by a history and tradition of manufacturing excellence.

Plywood vs solid woodPlywood has more dimensional stability when exposed to moisture variations than solid wood. Indeed plywood is formed from several thin sheets of wood veneer called plies that have been glued together under heat and pressure. The wood grain in adjacent layers is arranged perpendicular to each other. Because of this layered construction, strength and other properties of plywood are more uniform than solid wood. Furthermore the glue acts to limit water absorption, so plywood is less susceptible to gain and loss of moisture than solid wood.Joubert plywood with Exterior gluing class 3 have been manufactured with waterproof resins.See chart for dimensional variations of plywood compared to solid wood

Installation recommendationsFor exterior cladding:For a better appearance, we recommend sorting the panels prior to installation in order to get similar shades next to one another.

Support:The supporting battens are fixed vertically, leaving an air space of at least 10mm and they must meet the requirements of the Service Class 2. If they have to be fixed horizontally, they should be cut and fixed in such a way as not to hinder the air circulation nor the flow of accidentally entered water.

Installation:Prior to installation on the site, the panels must be prepared in the workshop. After being cut, the edges of the panel should be sealed and then a primary protective layer should be applied on both sides. Cladding requires finishing: 3 layers of stain or paint are to be applied on site. The panels can be installed on a cement, metal or wood frame. A 2 mm space per metre should be left between the panels. If the frame is wooden, the panel is protected from water by a rain membrane and the screws must penetrate at least 25 mm. The fixation of the panel onto the uprights is done by using stainless steel screws.

Horizontal joints:The joints can be done by either overlapping or with the help of a rain flap. The edges of the panel must be sealed. Each lower edge must act as a dripstone and the edge of the base panel must be at least 20 cm from the ground. U-shaped metal or plastic strips are not allowed on the lower edge.

Vertical joints:The joints must be done on a support and can be:> Hollow and not covered: in this case the support must be protected by

a rain membrane and the edges must be sealed> Covered: for this, reference should be made to the Professional Rules

of the SNJF (National Union of Joints and Façades)> Protected by a capping strip.

Eaves fascia:The thickness of the panel is at least 15 mm. All the edges must be sealed, and the first protective layer on the face veneers must be applied in the workshop.

Cladding on soffits: The thickness of the panel is at least 10 mm and is made up of at least 5 plies. The distance between the supports must not be more than 50 times the thickness of the panel. For panels grooved on the face veneer, the thickness is measured from the bottom of the groove. The cutting and the first protective layers on both face veneers must be carried out in the workshop. The plenum must be ventilated.

General rules of use for panelsThe risks linked to wood dustWood is a natural material, however its transformation produces dust which can affect the health of people exposed to it.

Wearing an individual protection mask of a minimum P2 kind is compulsory when the wood dust concentration in the atmosphere of the workplace exceeds the limited value of professional exposure of 1mg/m3.

For further information, you can consult the National Institute for Research and Security website www.inrs.fr.

Protection of the panelsIn very humid or exterior environments, a protective treatment is essential for both the decorative aspect of the panel and the preservation against biological attacks.

The general rules for the application of paint or varnish on wood can also generally be applied to plywood (brush, roller or spray gun).

Plywood is a highly versatile material, with exceptional resistance and durability. However, in order to maintain its characteristics and numerous advantages, it is necessary to respect a certain number of rules in terms of logistics, use and installation.

StoragePlywood panels are not fragile, but their storage does require some care. They should be laid flat on a level surface, preferably safe from moisture and laid on battens spaced 50 cm apart. When storing packs on top of one another the intermediate battens should be aligned vertically with the ones below. Storage in a temperate place, without significant changes in temperature, helps to avoid moisture return which can cause panels to bend. This phenomenon is reversible and does not affect the mechanical characteristics of the product. It can also appear during transport if the weather conditions are particularly bad.

When panels are curved, it is important to stack them one by one and to separate them with battens installed at regular intervals in order to allow their ventilation. This helps to eliminate excess moisture and also its spreading throughout every panel, allowing it to return to its original flatness. If the panels have to be stored temporarily outside, the stacks must be covered with a waterproof but vapor-permeable sheet.

Direct contact with the ground can bring about significant moisture absorption in the panels located at the bottom of the pile. It is therefore necessary to place the panels on battens (preferably spaced 50 cm apart). Storage by laying on the side is to be avoided particularly for panels with machined edges. The top of the stack must be covered with a protection to keep the panels free from dirt.

General installation of NF Extérieur CTBX panelsWhile designed for exterior uses, some common rules of use should be applied in order to maintain all the intrinsic qualities of the panels:

> The panels should be kept at their average humidity rate of 10% (+/- 3%) with relative humidity in the air of 50 to 70%

> The panels should be allowed to stabilise at the worksite prior to installation, particularly if they have been kept for some time in a very dry or humid environment

> Make sure that works bringing significant hygrometry onto the worksite do not take place after the installation of the panels; take precautions to let the plaster breath before the installation of the panels. Do not place flooring on a damp support.

> Ventilate the reverse face of the panels (air space) to allow the evacuation of humidity

General technical characteristics

HandlingWhen handling the stacks of plywood panels, the edges should be protected in order to avoid damage.

Obviously, this is even more important for panels whose surfaces have been painted or veneered.

Cutting and machiningPlywood is machined easily. It is one of the many advantages of this material.

SawingSaws with very fine teeth avoid the fibre tearing. The use of tungsten carbide tipped tools is recommended.

When sawing, the panels must be placed in such a way that their face is cut first. The cutting speed of the blades must be 50 to 60 m/s. The

blade projection should not be higher than 10 mm in comparison with the face of the panel.

GroovingGrooving is generally carried out in the direction of the grain of the face. The grooves can have various profiles according to the desired effect. Cutters with tungsten carbide tips are used, and at a striking angle of 20°. Optimal speed is 40 to 50 m/s.

DrillingThe use of augers is perfectly adapted for drilling plywood and the usual rotation speed ranges between 2500 and 5000 rpm.
