OURMISSION STATEMENT

Pastor’s Ponderings by the Rev. Dr. Rex Stewart

Dear Friends,

I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the thoughtful celebration in July of my 25th anniversary serving as your pastor. It was so much fun and I was filled with joy! Your kind words, both spoken and written in notes, along with your generous gifts of gift cards to local restaurants and movie theaters will continue to give both me and Carol “warm fuzzies” for quite some time.

It seems hard to believe that so many years have passed since we came to Youngstown. But when I look at photographs of our family when we first arrived, with David and Robert so young and little… and then see them now, all grown up, mature, married, and towering over us, I realize that, yes, 25 years have come and gone!

We have accomplished much together as a church in those years, and more accomplishments are no doubt in store. The sky’s the limit! I’m looking forward to this new season of activity, of praise and prayer, of service and growth in faith—in myself, and in you. I hope you will once again avail yourselves of the joys of working and worshipping together as a family of faith as together we seek to follow more closely our Sovereign One, Jesus Christ!

Peace Be With You!

Welcome

Sunday School for children starts on 9/16/18

Dear Church Families,

Now that we are settled into our rental home, we would like to say thank you to everyone. The Fix-It Club and everyone that came to help pull things out of our house and move things to storage, that was truly amazing. Everyone that helped clean clothes, monetary contributions, Rex and Carol for opening up their home to us. Thank you, Thank you. We truly still get emotional at the amount of support everyone has given to us.

As we slowly move forward, we will be rebuilding on Elm Street. Thank you for all of the continued thoughts and prayers. We could not have done it without you.

With all our heartfelt appreciation,

The Kromer Family

PW HappeningsWell, it’s nearly September and time to put on our running shoes and get ready, always keeping our eyes on the Cross, the Prize, moving toward Him, knowing then, we can never go wrong:

I’d like to thank all the members who made our “Over 80 Luncheon” so much fun! Ann, Winnie, Debbie, Phyllis, Pat, Gwen, and Kate for prepping food and the dining tables. Ruth Lagace led several menfolk in cleaning up, and our Deacons and Jan Howard kept the conversations and encoruagement going, Donna and Claudia for leading our annual sing-along. A great day was had by all, even the ladies from Lockport Home.

Chili Sauce making has been rescheduled to September 6th, in case you’re interested in helping. At about 9:30, we need 4 or 5 helpers to prep the vegetables and then about 2 pm, we need 3 other helpers to help jar the finished product. Got pint jars you want to unload? See me.

The PW annual Tea is at the home of Pastor Rex and Carol J Rogers on September 23 at 2 pm. PW members are asked to bring something to share on the tea table; Guests, just please come! You are beloved and we’ll have a lovely afternoon!

On the radar is the Fall Bazaar. The Rip & Stitch raffle quilt of ‘Wonky Squares’ is ready. The Knitters have been busy, sewers, crafters also. Heads up bakers! Your time is coming soon.

End of summer song of the insects drifts in from open windows. Orioles, hummers and warblers will soon be migrating out those snowbirds by design, but we sure love them when they return.

Have a blessed day,Peggy

The Horizon Bible Study will begin September 18th at 10:00 in the Tower Lounge. This year’s topic is The Promise. The study booklets are $10.00 and can be picked up at office from Emily.

We will trace the repetition of God’s most frequent promise. God’s words “I will be with you” or “I am with you” as they wend their way through scripture. We will journey together in the process of discovering God’s presence in the lives of women and men of scripture and find God’s fingerprint in our own stories. I am excited to discover God’s enduring presence in, with, and among us.

We will continue to meet on the first and third Tuesday’s for a total of nine lessons. Each lesson is based on the theme, but it is not necessary to attend all sessions to be part of our study group.

If you have any questions, please call Jan Howard @ 570-6652. Hope to see you on the 18th.

Whew! It has been a whirlwind summer for YCM! Youth Group enjoyed their “Moving Up Camping Weekend” on August 10th-12th and we added an extra mission trip to ROC SALT Prysbeterian Mission in Rochester, NY this year, from August 8th-10th. A total of 20 youth particpated as well as 4 adults. Thanks to Kim Alexander, Joyce Casper, and Beth McCalister for roughing it for several days of service, worship, fun and fellowship with a boisterous group of teenagers! This was our fourth annual camping trip, and it’s a wonderful way to introduce new youth group members to “veteran” youth and to share our traditions as well as make new memories!

The mission/camping excursion was the last of three Youth Group trips this summer: the annual week-long Mission Trip was June 24th-29th, followed by our second visit to the Montreat Youth Conference in North Carolina in July. Mission Trip took us to Grand Rapids, Michigan this year, and gave 18 youth an opportunity to work with an immigrant community, a day camp for underprivileged children, a domestic abuse shelter, and a center with therapy horses for the physically challenged. 8 of our youth then went to Montreat, NC from July 28th -August 4th with other high schoolers from our Presbytery for a faith-deepening week with spirit-filled worship services, thought-provoking small group discussions, and lots of opportunities to meet Presbyterian Youth from all over the East Coast. Thanks to all our chaperones: Monica Barner, Joyce Casper, Jason Cramer, and Beth McCalister, most of whom take vacation time from their paid jobs to ensure a safe, sacred opportunity for our youth to step into new responsibilities, gain confidence and independence, and discover who God wants them to be.

Between Mission Trip and Montreat, YCM also hosted another awesome Vacation Bible School week, from July 23rd to 27th. The “Rolling River Rampage” theme invited 96 community children and over 50 adult and youth volunteers to find adventure, acceptance, joy, rest, and peace, through the Living Water. Enough cannot be said about what a wide-reaching ministry VBS is: from sharing God’slove with nearly 100 children, to empowering youth and adults to find their own ministerial skills, and even supporting an outside mission (this year, we collected money for Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper.) God’s love and blessing truly “flowed” throughout the week, and will continue to ripple out through the lives we serve together.

Now, as we gear up for Rally Day and the beginning of Sunday School, Confirmation, and another full season of Youth Group activities, I encourage you all to search your hearts and discover how you are ready and able to continue support for YCM. Help in the kitchen for our upcoming Murder Mystery Dinner? Donate items for a basket/silent auction? Maybe stretch your comfort zone and sign up to be a Sunday School helper (it’s only a couple week commitment!) Or perhaps jump in and chaper-one one of our YG trips to experience firsthand the spiritual growth that takes place when we focus our time and attention on our loving, gracious God!

As our RALLY DAY theme states: “Serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13b (NIV).

I look forward to seeing everyone in September, especially at the Rally Day Ice Cream Social!!

Grace and peace,Michelle

Hymn of the MonthO MORNING STAR, HOW FAIR AND BRIGHT

The author and composer of this hymn (tune WIE SCHON LEUCHTET) was Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608), a Lutheran pastor educated at the University of Wittenberg. It was published in 1598 and thought to have been written the year before in the midst of a plague. J. S. Bach liked its tune so much, he used it in several chorales which probably saved it from being lost.

Follow the Peace of Augsburg in 1555, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V entered a monastery and handed over the Spanish Crown to his son, Philip II who promptly engaged in warring with all of Europe for the purpose of returning the entire population to Catholicism. Although Germany’s Thirty Years’ War would not begin until 10 years after Nicolai’s death, his pastorate occurred while the stage was being set for that terrible conflict. After earning his doctorate, Nicolai assisted his father’s ministry for five years before taking a post of his own in 1583 at Herdecke where he immediately encountered difficulties with the all-Catholic Town Council. After the Spanish invasion of 1586, with the mass reintroduced, he resigned and left town. The following November, he became pastor of a town in Waldock where he encountered opposition from the Calvinists and was prohibited from preaching for a short time. From there, his whereabouts are unknown until 1596 when he became pastor of the city of Unna in Westphalia where he again ran into trouble with the Calvinists. The town was also in the midst of a plague which ultimately claimed the lives of over 1,300 of its residents. His parsonage overlooked the churchyard, and Nicolai was deeply affected by the sight of all those burials. It also gave him cause to wonder whether he might not be the next victim. He is said to have presided at over as many as 30 burials in a single day. To comfort his parishioners and assuage his own grief, he wrote a series of meditations called “Joyful Mirror of the Eternal Life” for which he wrote this hymn and two or three others. The Spanish invasion of December 1598 forced him to leave but he returned the following April. In 1600, he left to become chief pastor in the city of Hamburg where he served until he died from a fever in 1608. While there, at the age of 48, he married the widow of a fellow clergyman who made him stepfather of a boy and a girl.

This hymn, and one other, “Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying” (WACHET AUF) from the “Joyful Mirror” would become famous and initiate a new era of hymnody in the German Lutheran Church which would strive to emphasize the devotional aspect of worship. This innovative hymn, filled with imagery, changed the congregational hymn from being an expression of praise to God, or of sorrow and penitence, to being a hymn of devotion. People became so fond of it that its tune was often chimed by city chimes, and verses or lines from it decorated everyday household earthenware. It became de rigueur for weddings and certain festivals. One of Nicolai’s biographers wrote, “If pure quality, without respect to quantity, were our criterion, Nicolai would have to be ranked as history’s greatest chorale writer, and one of its greatest hymn writers.”
