Tho number of disasters that have occurred in the past few yenrs and have been duo to audi causes led tho inventor to spend a considerable period in devis- ing and perfecting his apparatus. Its Availability for the object it is proposed ' to servo has now been fully tested, nnd gentlemen, who can Bpcak authoritatively about marine nffnirs believe that it will bo a most UBoful and valunblo aquisition to tho equipment of seagoing vessels. The principle of tho invention is so simple that those who saw its work- ings yesterday were surprised that it1 had not been thought of and the present inventor and machinist brought it to public notice., Mr. John Adams is tho patentee, and for the past two .years lias worked diligently, day after day, to bring it to perfection. Tho idea was convoyed to him through hearing tl)e .recounting of tho Stoninglon nnd Narraganettt collision on tho Sound, ono of his nieces having been a passenger. To his mind it sccmoi tis practical to stop a steamer sud- denly, going nt a full rate of speed, as to stop a train of cars on a rail- way train with the air or hand brake. Ho took for his model a fish, calling the body of tho natatorial species his vessel and its "fins" his brake. Just then tho pilot bloyV a whistle of waring to notify tliosu aboard that he was nbout to t6st th? faith of tho invention, nnd J'n another moment there was the slightest perceptible lurch and tho vessel stood almost still. By actual mcnitiromont tho steamer had not drifted ovor tvn feet beforo tho engineer was onauicu to revcrso nis engine and cjiango tho direction of tho vpbkoI. FBIDAY, KOV. 10, 1882.

after tho "fins" were let go. Againunu ngain was the test applied untilit was fairly decided that tho intro-duction of tho brake in no waynlFected the construction of thevessel nor damaged it in any manner.Mr. McAdams, who was on boardtho City 2oiutt then ordered theengineer to stait his vessel, let gotho fins and keep up his steam, tobco if tho vessel would go forwaid.ljut with all tho forco applied thosteamer refused to budge, and btueklike a rock in tho water. The in-

vention consists of a pair of ironshutters or fins, tho area of whichis in direct ratio with tho size of theship, and hinged one on each side oftho stern post. They shut close tothe side of tho vessel and aro keptso by a. simple apparntus on deckwhich is connected with tho pilothouse. When tho signal is given to"let go," tho stays connected withtho liins allow thorn to open at rightangles and cause the stoppage oftho vessel almost instantly. Thowater being a yielding body, acts asn spring or cushion and nono of thatjarring or shock ib experienced suchas is felt on a raihoad when thebrakes aro applied. In the opinionof tho inventor, thoro is no oxcusofor collision with such a device. Many of tho collision reported, oninvestigation, showed that tho pilothad over livo minutes warning toallay tho speed of his vessel andavert disaster, but was unable to doso in that time. Tho present con-

trivance is guaranteed to stop anyvessel, no matter what size or rateof speed, inside hor owi length atleast, and yesterday's experiencecertainly prored tho truth of tho in-

ventor's plea.
