Jesus and the Trinity:

1) Introduction.a) The Bible does not use the word “Trinity”. b) The Bible does however teach that there is one God and that this God is three

persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.c) This unity and distinction has existed into all eternity past.

2) God the Father.a) Jesus comes to earth and clearly prays to a worship God the Father who is in

Heaven.Matthew 10:32 32 "Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess himbefore My Father who is in heaven.Matthew 16:17 17 And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh andblood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Luke 10:21-22 21 At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I praise You,O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise andintelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 22 "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Sonis except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills toreveal Him ."

b) Jesus clearly believes that as the Son, He is sent by His Father.John 5:19-27 19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you,the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 "For the Father loves the Son,and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater worksthan these, so that you will marvel. 21 "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor theFather. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 24 "Truly, truly, Isay to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does notcome into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour iscoming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear willlive. 26 "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life inHimself; 27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.

c) The Father is clearly God.

3) God the Son.

a) The Bible clearly distinguishes the Son from the Father.Matthew 3:16-17 16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; andbehold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whomI am well-pleased."

b) The Bible is clear that Jesus is God.i) Jesus is eternal—without beginning or end.

John 1:1-3 NAU John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, andthe Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being throughHim, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Speaking of the Son:Hebrews 1:10-12 10 And, "YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF

THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS;11

THEY WILLPERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN; AND THEY ALL WILL BECOME OLD LIKE A GARMENT, 12

AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP; LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BECHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO ANEND."

This quotes Psalm 102:25-27.

Colossians 1:15-17 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16

For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things have been created throughHim and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

ii) Jesus is the “I AM”

NAU John 4:26 Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He ."The Greek is “I AM, the one who is speaking to you”

NAU John 8:24 "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe thatI am He , you will die in your sins."

NAU John 8:28 So Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I amHe , and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.

John 13:19 19 "From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it doesoccur, you may believe that I am He .

John 18:5-8 5 They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am He ." AndJudas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. 6 So when He said to them, "Iam He ," they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Therefore He again asked them, "Whom doyou seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene." 8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He ;so if you seek Me, let these go their way,"

iii) Paul quotes the Old Testament and uses YHWH to refer to Jesus.Romans 10:9-13 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a personbelieves, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.11 For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." 12

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAMEOF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."

The OT tells us to call on ‘YHWH’s name’ and Paul says call on Jesus’name.

ESV Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall bethose who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors shall bethose whom the LORD calls.

Philippians 2:9-11 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Himthe name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILLBOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tonguewill confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

NAU Isaiah 45:23 "I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth inrighteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue willswear allegiance .

iv) Jesus is called God.John 20:27-29 27 Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see Myhands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, butbelieving." 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" 29 Jesus said tohim, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, andyet believed."

Romans 9:5 5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Titus 2:13-14 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great

God and Savior, Christ Jesus,14

who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawlessdeed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

Hebrews 1:8 8 But of the Son He says , "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER ANDEVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.

2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who havereceived a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, JesusChrist:

c) Jesus Christ is clearly God ‘in the flesh’. While remaining fully God, He becomesfully man because man is made in God’s image.Colossians 1:15-17 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by

Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Colossians 2:8-10 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and emptydeception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world,rather than according to Christ. 9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 andin Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;

Hebrews 1:1-3 NAU Hebrews 1:1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets inmany portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom Heappointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His

power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty onhigh,

Hebrews 2:14-18 4 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewisealso partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject toslavery all their lives. 16 For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to thedescendant of Abraham. 17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so thatHe might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make

propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He hassuffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

Hebrews 5:7-9 7 In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loudcrying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.8 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. 9 And having

been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,Christ has true human flesh. He prays like a man. He dies like a man, suffering and ‘learning’ obedience. “Perfection” in Hebrews references the‘glorification’ of Christ—when He is exalted as ruler over all things. Histask is completed, e.g. mission perfected.

4) God the Spirit.a) Jesus promises that upon return to heaven, He will send the Spirit.

Acts 1:8 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall beMy witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

Acts 2:3333

"Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received fromthe Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

b) The Bible clearly teaches that the Holy Spirit is God. He is a personal being not amere “force”. The Bible also clearly distinguishes the Spirit from both the Fatherand the Son.

c) He is our counselor, which clearly denotes a “personal” being.John 14:16,17 (NIV) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to bewith you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees himnor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you .

John 14:24-26 (NIV) 24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words youhear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25 “All this I have spoken while stillwith you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teachyou all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 15:26 (NIV) 26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, theSpirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

John 16:7 (NIV) 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I goaway, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

d) The Holy Spirit speaks .Acts 13:2-4 (NIV) 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Setapart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they hadfasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. 4 The two of them, sent ontheir way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.

Acts 21:10-11 (NIV) 10 After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabuscame down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feetwith it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”

e) The Holy Spirit can be lied to and offended just like a personal being.Acts 5:3-4 (NASB95 ) 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the HolySpirit and to keep back some of the price of the land? 4 “While it remained unsold, did it notremain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you haveconceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

Matthew 12:31-3231

"Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32 "Whoever speaks a word against theSon of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not beforgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

f) Having Holy Spirit inside the believer makes the believer God’s Temple.1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NIV) 16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and thatGod’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’stemple is sacred, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV) 19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who isin you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

2 Corinthians 6:16-18 (NIV)16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk amongthem, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” 17 “Therefore come out from them andbe separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” 18 “I will be a Father toyou, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Ephesians 2:21-22 (NIV) 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become aholy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling inwhich God lives by his Spirit.

In the Old Testament, the temple was to be the place where God’s glory dwelled. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit who transforms us into theimage of Christ precisely because the Spirit is God’s glory residing withinus. Remember, God does not give His glory to another (Isa. 42:8; 48:11).The Holy Spirit in us is God’s glory dwelling within precisely because theSpirit is co-equal in power and glory with the Father and the Son.

5) The Bible clearly teaches that God is “one” and that there is “no other” accept theLord.Deuteronomy 6:4 4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!

1 Corinthians 8:4-6 4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know thatthere is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. 5 For even if there areso-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, 6 yetfor us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord,Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.

Ephesians 4:4-6 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through alland in all.

6) Conclusion:There is much more we could say about the Trinity and the Deity of Jesus. It is clearthat all three are God. They are different persons but one being.
