FLOOD-GATE® FEATURES

Completely Automatic: (both closing and resetting)The building owner does not have to activate the valve or even bepresent to ensure protection from sewage backup.

Effective Operation Without ElectricityFully mechanical - no electricity is required to activate the valve or to reset the gate after operation.

Full Port:Nothing to obstruct the flow or trap debris.

In-Line Construction:Can easily be installed in existing buildings.

Positive Seal:Once closed, it prevents leakage beyond the valve. 99.9% effective in tests with a 45 foot head of water pressure.

Cast Iron Body with Stainless Steel Knife Gate:Long life and dependability. It is designed to cut through normal debrissuch as raw sewage and paper material that would clog regular flapperstyle backwater valves.

No Resetting:Valve does not require resetting after being activated.

FLOOD-GATE® APPLICATIONS

A sewerage backflow into thebuilding/house will happen if a stoppageor similar problem in the municipal/streetsewer, or septic system occurs causingthe drainage water level to rise above thetop of the building/house drain. It is underthese conditions that the Flood-Gateworks.

Once the backflow subsides andthe drainage water level returns tonormal, the counterweight atop theexpansion chamber forces the trapped airout of the chamber and into the drainageline, allowing the knife gate to lowerto a full open position. Now theFlood-Gate is ready to guard againstfuture backflow situations.

As the sewerage backflow occurs the airtrapped in the expansion chamber iscompressed by sewerage backup. Thepressure in the expansion chambercauses the knife gate to rise until the 4”or 6” drainage opening is completelysealed. This action occurs with a 9” headof drainage water for a 4” valve anda 14” for a 6” valve. When completeclosure is obtained in the valve, all back-flow is prevented from entering thebuilding or structure.

FLOOD-GATE® OPERATION AND APPROVALS

The trapped air in the expansion chambercreates an upward force on the counter-weight plate of the diaphragm.

When pressure increases beyond 6”head/water, the plate is forced upwardactivating the closing of the knife gate.

A 9” head/water (4” valve), 14”head/water (6” valve) is sufficient toraise the gate to its fully closed position.

OPERATION

The FLOOD-GATE automatic back-water valve is designed to protect abuilding and its contents from damage due to a backup in the

drainage system. The FLOOD-GATEis intended for installation in thesanitary drain line connecting abuilding’s sanitary system with the

local sanitary sewer system orseptic tank. It can also be used instorm sewer applications.

OPERATION OF KNIFE GATE

Lacking any upward force, the gate is in the open position, which allows for unrestricted flow through a full port opening.

Approvals

The FLOOD-GATE Automatic Backwater Valve conforms to requirements per ASME A112.14.1 for Backwater Valves.

IAPMO Listed, File No. 3758.

The FLOOD-GATE Automatic Backwater Valve has been approved for use in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky,Michigan, Massachusetts, Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

FLOOD-GATE® VALVE INSTALLATION: 4 INCH (7140Y04) & 6 INCH (7140Y06)

CRITICAL INSTALLATIONDATA:The installer must abide by one criticalMINIMUM dimension. This is the dis-tance from the top of the horizontaldrain line, where the FLOOD-GATE isinstalled, to the top of basement floordrain. (See FLOOD-GATE ValveTesting Instructions Illustration forminimum bury depth on page 8.) Anadditional two (2) inches more thanthis minimum is suggested, so that thetop of the valve cover will be situated2” below the pit cover. The FLOOD-GATE valve must have a stable supportblock between the base of the valveand the bottom of the pit. The optionalFLOOD-GATE pit, page 4, is regularlyfurnished with an integral supportblock.

FACTORY TESTED:

The FLOOD-GATE VALVE must beproperly installed with the properdirection of flow (as indicated by thearrows on the valve) to ensure properfunctioning. Each FLOOD-GATE valvehas been thoroughly inspected andtested at the factory. If the valve isdamaged during shipment, or if anyservice to the valve is necessary, return the complete valve to the factoryfor repair or replacement. DO NOTattempt to disassemble or repair theFLOOD-GATE in the field.

The Flood-Gate is installed in a 20-foot deep concrete pit protecting thethree branch lines into a church’snursery and overall environment.

The FLOOD-GATE automatic backwatervalve is designed to protect a buildingand its contents from flood damagedue to a backup in the sanitary sewersystem and can also be used in stormsewer applications. Properly installed, the FLOOD-GATE will provide years oftrouble-free automatic service.Depending on individual circumstances, one of the two following installationguidelines must be followed:

OPTION ONE:The FLOOD-GATE must beinstalled in a ventilated and dryaccess pit in the horizontaldrain line between the buildingand the sewer main (a sealed orflooded pit will restrict the freemovement of the valve).Although this provides completeprotection from flooding, all ofthe plumbing fixtures in thebuilding will be out of serviceonce the FLOOD-GATE is acti-vated. In this type installation, the optional alarm system ishighly recommended.

OPTION TWO:

Another installation, sometimespreferred, locates the FLOOD-GATE where only the fixturesinstalled below grade (as in abasement) are connected on theupstream side of the valve. Allfixtures installed above gradeare connected on the down-stream (sewer) side of thevalve. This allows continued useof the above grade fixtures, while protecting below gradeareas from flooding.

FLOOD-GATE® TESTING INSTRUCTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS

NOTE: X = The dimension from the top of the horizontal drain line to the top of basement floor drain.

IMPORTANT: THIS PROCEDUREMUST BE FOLLOWED AFTERTHE INITIAL INSTALLATION.

1. Place a “Test Ball” through the maincleanout into the horizontal drainline and inflate it.

2. With an ordinary garden hose, runwater into the building drainthrough the cleanout opening (thiswill simulate a backup of the mainsewer).

3. Watch the round opening in the topof the FLOOD-GATE VALVE cover. You should see the end of the valvestem rise as the valve closes. Fullclosure should occur before thewater in the cleanout openingreaches floor level. This means thevalve is closing properly.

4. Deflate the “Test Ball.” This willallow the drain to open and youshould be able to see the valvestem drop; returning to its normalopen position.

NOTE: It is important to test theFLOOD-GATE after longperiods of inactivity to assurereadiness. Follow theseinstructions to test for properoperation.
