In November and December, the Seward County 4-H

Junior Leaders provided leadership to both the 4-H

Achievement Party and Holiday Maker Day. Thank

you JL’s for sharing your positive spirit, organizational

skills, and dedication during both of these events. Next

Meeting: Sunday, January 6 @ 4:00 p.m. at the

Extension Office. 4-H’ers who are ages of 13-18 are

welcome to join! We would love to have new members

join us in the new year. Contact Ann Dobesh,

[email protected] for more information.

The Special Garden Project is a way to offer 4-H

members the chance to grow unusual and fun projects

in their gardens. This year the Special Garden Project

is focused on the unique Carmine Splendor

Okra. Carmine Splendor Okra is as unique as it is

tasty. This plant is high yielding and produces

uniform, red pods. The stout 5-pointed pods are deep

red when small and at the best eating quality. The

tropical-looking, pinkish flowers are also edible and

have a sweet, mild flavor. The mature seed pods also

give a fun twist for winter interest in a container.

Youth should enroll for the Special Garden Project

through 4-H Online. Once enrolled through 4-H

Online, youth are then to call their local office to let

them know they enrolled for the project. By enrolling

through 4-H Online, youth will have access to the box

folder with the

educational materials

including the growing

newsletter and evaluation.

Cat Club is a monthly webinar series offering

educational information about caring for your cat and

showing your cat in 4-H. Youth do not need to be

enrolled in 4-H or in the 4-H cat project to participate.

Cat Club is a great resource for anyone interested in

showing cats in 4-H whether you have one now or

not! Youth of all ages are welcome to join.

The Cat Club series is held on the second Thursday of

each month at 6:00 pm CT. Add this to your calendar

by downloading the 4-H Cat Club recurring

event .ics file. The Cat Club will convene on the

following dates:

January 10, 2019 @ 6:00 PM CT

February 14, 2019 @ 6:00 PM CT

March 14, 2019 @ 6:00 PM CT

April 11, 2019 @ 6:00 PM CT

The Pick Your Project, available

at https://4hcurriculum.unl.edu, has been updated

for the 2019 program year. Like last year, the

printable, 2-page 2019 Nebraska 4-H Project

Listing is available and can be distributed to 4-H

members, volunteers, and parents. This printable

4-H Project Listing shares a link to the Pick Your

Project. Both of these resources can be publicly

accessed at https://4h.unl.edu/resources.

Seward County 4-H will be awarding scholarships to

deserving 4-H’ers in the 2019 graduating class. To be

eligible for these scholarships, 4-H’ers must have

submitted their Career Portfolio. Letters for the 4-H

scholarships were mailed out in November to eligible

seniors. They are due January 10.

4-H members may also apply for one or more of the

statewide Nebraska 4-H scholarships; criteria and

application forms can be found at: http://

ne4hfoundation.org, then click on the Recognition

most frequently checked!

Please enroll as soon as possible so that you continue to receive emails, letters, and newsletters.

Enroll means to sign up to be a 4-H member or volunteer for the

year. (It does NOT register you for the fair).

A project is centered around a topic of

interest to members. Members can choose one or more topics to learn about. There are a whole range of projects for 4-H’ers, everything from animals, to gardening, to safety and more! A project should include a series of learning experiences related to that topic. When you enroll in 4-H online, you sign up for projects.

An exhibit is the specific item or animal 4-H’ers bring

to the fair. There is a separate registration process for county fair that will happen this summer. April 1—Sign up for Projects July 10—Sign up to bring exhibits If you have any questions, let us know and we’ll be happy to help.

February 15, 2019 marks 150 years since the

day the state of Nebraska chartered the

University of Nebraska. This means that on

February 15, 1869, the University of Nebraska

became a part of the fabric of our state.

Flat Herbie is here to celebrate this milestone.

Cut out Herbie and make him part of your

community by taking him on a tour of your

town. Snap a picture of him at local events,

favorite landmarks or 4-H activities. Upload

the pictures to your social media channels with

#N150Herbie or email us at

[email protected].

We encourage everyone (students, faculty,

staff, 4-H families, and alumni) to get in on the

fun with Flat Herbie throughout 2019! Flat

Herbie will be available to pick up at the

extension Office starting January 10. All club

leaders will receive a Herbie at the Leader

Training in February.

Participate during the month of February to

win the Grand Prize! All photos submitted

during Nebraska 4-H Month will be included in

the N150 Grand Prize Drawing, sponsored by

Nebraska 4-H. Two winners will receive a

UNL Prize Pack filled with Husker Gear.

Teens and adults are invited to share their skills by

teaching a one-hour—five-hour hands-on workshop

related to a 4-H project. This is a great leadership

opportunity for teens! Contact Ann to share your

ideas.

4-H Council has enacted a late fee of $15 per member for those that are late with animal ID sheets and county

fair pre-entry. Identification forms and/or entries may be submitted up to 7 days past the specified due date

(County Fair only) and are subject to this late fee. ID FORMS AND ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

AFTER THIS 7 DAY PERIOD. If you are late with identification forms for State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben, you

may be ineligible to exhibit at these shows.

We know that the various deadlines can be confusing. Animal projects, in particular, DO have additional

requirements. Part of the project is understanding and meeting these requirements.

How can you make sure you are on track?

1) Read the newsletter. It is now primarily delivered by email. Make sure that the office has the email address

that is checked most frequently.

2) Attend 4-H club meetings.

3) Call, email, or visit 4-H staff at the Extension Office.

4) Like our page on Facebook, and follow our Twitter account, for reminders and announcements.

5) Sign up for Remind.

Year End Treasurer’s Report—Due December 31

As we near the end of the 2018 4-H year, 4-H clubs will need to prepare a Year Ending 4-H Club Treasurer’s

report. Even if your club does not have a treasury and does not have an EIN Number, please complete the Year

Ending 4-H Club Treasurer’s Report and submit it to the Extension Office.

Extension staff will then forward the information to the IRS for the Form 990 or Form 990 EZ. This is important

so that Seward County 4-H and the Nebraska 4-H Foundation can maintain their tax status.

Volunteer Enrollment

All 4-H volunteers need to re-enroll in 4honline every year. Please make sure that your club organizational

leaders, as well as anyone who helps in any way with your club, is enrolled. You may re-enroll for the 2019 year

after October 16. Go to https://ne.4honline.com/

lists. Thank you to all of the 4-H club leaders, who do the important work of positive youth development.

4-H Club Meeting Minutes are needed for each organized meeting your 4-H club holds. Thank you to those clubs

who have been turning them in after each meeting. If your club has not turned them in yet, please do so before the
