Ups and Downs and Ups and Downs
By Pastor Gayle Pope
I’ll be honest. I am getting so tired of everything Covid-19.
Just for the heck of it, I googled Covid-19 and got 2,900,000,000 results. It seems like every minute of every day has something to do with this pandemic. It’s affecting EVERYTHING and EVERYONE in our lives. And yet, here in Adams and Hancock Counties, not too many people actually have the disease that we know of for sure.
And that’s another difficult, confusing and scary thing about the situation. It seems like there is more that we DON’T know for sure than we DO know.
Since I have only been your pastor for three months, I am just starting to get to know you. I wonder how people are doing. Has anyone lost your job? Are any of you losing money in your business? I wonder how parents are dealing with kids being home and having to help with school work. Who has had to cancel big plans and special events? I know of some who are close to someone who has the virus. And some who have had loved ones in the hospital who they couldn’t go visit.
Lots of people are expressing positive things about this situation – acts of love, care and heroism, parents spending more time with kids, people turning to faith. So there is fear, grief and anxiety, but also hope and encouragement. Ups and downs.
Myself, I’m a little down today – even though I have everything I need and nothing to complain about. I think I just feel the sadness and frustration of everyone else.
And that’s OK. We’re told to go ahead and “feel the feelings.” Don’t just deny them. There is healing in going through troubles rather than around them. Be patient with yourself. Give yourself time to grieve. I believe that. I can deal with ups and downs because I know a few things. For example:
I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven
and earth. Psalm 121:1-2
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
The one who is in you [me] is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4
Jesus said, “In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!” John 16:33
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor
powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38
Whew! That’s better.
If you want to vent, give me a call!

NEW BOOK IN THE LIBRARY
When God Interrupts
by M. Craig Barnes
When God Interrupts is for men and women who are not living the life they had planned. It is for those who have faced significant loss, loss that has forced them to make a frightening choice. Will they clutch at something else for their salvation? Or can they leave their hands open long enough to re-ceive the life Jesus was dying to give them?
Spouses die or depart. Friendships wither. Health fades. Children grow up and leave home. We move to new jobs and new towns. The dreams and securities of the past are shattered, hopes for the future disappointed. Nothing stays the way it was or turns out exactly as we had expected. Life, it seems, is necessarily dotted with loss, marked by abandonment.
But all this should come as no surprise to Christians, those who are called to lose their lives in order to find them. So if we try to follow Jesus, we can count on a great deal of abandonment. The good—but hard—news of the gospel is that abandonment can be embraced as the opportunity to receive new life.
President John Heinecke called the meeting to order. Present were John Heinecke, LaDonna Houston, Mi-chael Houston, Leslie Frese, Gary Ideus, Eric Cassens, Kurt Schuster and Pastor Gayle Pope. Voting by email were Iris Trantham and Jackson Yingling.
This was a special meeting to vote on Resolution 12 to apply for the PayCheck Protection Program loan from Federal government. Loan is due to the Covid-19/stimulus bill. It will be processed thru local Golden
State Bank a division of United Community Bank (USB) Brown County State Bank. Total loan amount of $11,580, will be for period of two years at one (1) per-cent interest rate. Loan amount received will be used for employee’s payroll.
The motion to approve the resolution was approved.
Respectfully submitted,
LaDonna Houston,
Council Secretary

Any information you would like in the May news-letter must be submitted in its entirety by Monday,
June 22nd—No Exceptions!! Thanks in advance!
A HUGE Thank You from Golden Good Shepherd Home for your financial donation. We are very blessed to have a loving and caring community! Thank You!

Congratulations to Kayla Benali on the birth of her son, Adam Raymond, on April 9th! Cindy Kimble is the proud grandmother. Raymond and Marie Foster are his great grandparents.
Confirmation and First Communion Plans
Cody Shaffer, son of Curt and Kristin Shaffer, will be confirmed during Sunday worship on May 10. If worship is still live-streaming only (as we expect it will be), Cody will be giving his affirmation of faith before a handful of people at church and many more watching from home.
We will celebrate Holy Communion on that special day. Roger Reuschel, who has taught Confirmation for years, will serve as assisting minister. Cody will read the scriptures. I encourage our members to send cards to Cody to encourage him in his faith: 847 N 2450th Ave., Ursa, IL 62376-2201.
We have held two Confirmation classes via ZOOM video conferencing recent-ly, one on the Apostles Creed and one of Lutheran Worship. Roger will teach one last session on Luther and the Reformation before the school year ends!
Pastor Gayle plans to offer Holy Communion instruction for any interested chil-dren and youth as soon as we are able to worship in person again. Information has been sent to parents asking them to let Pastor know if they wish their children to take instruction and make their first communion.
Many of you were scheduled as Greeters, Commun-ion Assistants, Sound System, Video, Altar Committee, Flow-er Committee, Acolytes, Pick Up Cookies and Offering Coun-ters. Unfortunately, we won’t need you to fill those positions in May unless the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. If things change, Karen will notify you.
We would like to thank Julie Bunge for playing the organ and piano, and Rich Futhey for taking care of the sound system and filming each week.
Thank You to everyone who helps to make our Worship Services run smoothly!

CFCAC SCHOOL FAIR
The Community for Christ Assistance Center will hold their 12th Annual School Fair on Thursday, July 30, 2020. This School Fair provides school supplies and services at no cost to any Central Unit #3 student or any CFCAC client. A complete history of the services offered are stated on the information sheet (see the church bulletin board). On the average, it costs approximately $34.55 per student for his/her school supplies. Consequently, there is a grave need for donations to make this event possible.
Please consider making a donation to the CFCAC School Fair on behalf of the children of Unit #3. Any donation should be made payable to “CFCAC School Fair” and sent to:
CFCAC 113 East Jefferson PO Box 174 Camp Point, IL 62320
Thank you for your consideration of this project, CFCAC School Fair Committee
