Although a great start and a great finish are okay too, as Doug Kent can attest to. Kent became the sixth bowler in Denny’s PBA Tour history to win two Majors in one sea- son, defeating Chris Barnes, 237- 216, Sunday to win the 2007 Denny’s World Championship at DeVos Place. Kent won the season-open- ing USBC Masters for his sec- ond career Major title, then cap- tured his second career World Championship in the season’s second-to-last event. He is the first bowler since Walter Ray Williams Jr. in 2002-03 to win two Majors in a season and the eighth bowler all-time to win multiple World Championships. “This one really feels great, to win two in a season is very rare and just to be in this posi- tion is a great feeling,” Kent said. “Chris is a great champion, it just came down to who would catch the breaks and I caught one early to get ahead which meant he had to play catch-up, and that’s not the best place to be.” Though he’s been fairly quiet in the second half of the season, with two Majors under his belt Kent threw his name in an al- ready crowded Player of the Year race with one event – and the final Major – remaining. “The last five or six weeks I just haven’t been in synch and haven’t felt great, but I just knew if I stuck with it I would get here again,” Kent said. “I always get up for the Majors, and winning Superman two is something everyone dreams about. It’s another step closer to the Hall of Fame, too.” Kent jumped out to an early lead in the title match, striking in the first four frames, but Barnes clawed back with four consecutive strikes of his own in frames 5-8, while Kent had three spares in that span. With a chance to get within one pin of Kent, Barnes left the 4-pin in the 9th frame, however, and Kent struck with his first ball in the 10th frame for the ninth win of his career. The Newark, N.Y., native ad- vanced to the title match with a 235-219 win over Danny Wiseman. Kent had a chance to win by striking on his first ball in 10th, but a spare and a strike gave Wiseman a chance to tie with three strikes in the 10th. Wiseman struck with his first shot, but then left the 4-6-7-10 split to give Kent the match. Barnes advanced to the title match with a 246-226 win over Tony Reyes. Kent earned $50,000 and a four-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption through the 2010-11 season with the win. Barnes (Double Oak, Texas) took home $25,000 for second, Wiseman (Baltimore) earned $13,000 for third and Reyes (San Bruno, Calif.) earned $10,000 for fourth. Guys do it again as Mark Huertaswas certainly on his game. Hewon a thriller that went to thefinal ball edging upstart BretHaynes in the title game to takehome a nice $1,400 for his stu-pendous effort at host KeystoneLanes.

In our return to Keystone wehad a nice turnout of 187 en-trants in the two day event. Ittook a nice +64 men, and +22ladies to make the Saturday cutto the semis. On Sunday morn-ing in the 10:00 AM squad, which also took 1 in 5 to thesemis, we saw Men +64 andWomen -+35 making the grade. Also added were Super Seniors,Joe Nolan, Tom Dahl, LeoTartamella, and Bobbie Mc Col-lum to the board.

Leading the Semis wasFontana’s Mark Huertas whofired up a big +141 topping thefield with Roger Wrase at +119.So Mark would sit out and bowlfor the title. Wrase would receivea first round bye in the singleelims and enter in round two. Ittook a +68 (men) and +42 forthe 3 guaranteed ladies to make

the Sweet 16 Single Elim Finals..The Bowlers took to the

lanes. In the first round singleelims and losing were RolandSuase, Sean Johnson, MelissaRocha, Jackey Nichols, TonyRodriguez, Sue Purdie andKathryn Gonzaleaz. They gotchecks of $100 in 10-16thplaces.

In round two, being elimi-nated were Eddie Katz, GaryGordon, Don Johnson Sr. andRoger Wrase, and they cashed in6-9th places and $107 each.

Round three had Haynesdown Brian Reyes 217-178.Kmel Cunanan got to GabrielTrejo 227-207. Losers were 4thand 5th and $125 each and$112.50 each.

It was now Kmel and Bretfor the right to meet Huertas forthe title. In a good match Haynesfinally pulled away to win 221-203. Kmel was third for $200and Bret off to the title game vsHuertas. The title game was setand the horses were paid as Bretreturned $29 for the people whohad him in the horses!

Two super guys would nowmeet for the title. Bret led off

and struck, as did Huertas.Mark then had a turkey to leadand then Bret came right backwith a four bagger in frames 6-9to take the lead. Huertas doubledin frames 7-8. In the 9th he left a7-8 split. He picked it up tokeep in the game and the doublein the 10th forced Bret to havethe first strike for the title. Helet go a great shot and the pinswere blasted. Altho hit twice the10 pin remained. Mark won hisfirst title. In a game such as thisit is too bad someone had to lose.Great bowling Mark andcongrats to a fine young manwhom I have known for severalyears and it is heart warming tosee him win the title. Great bowl-ing Mark! Great bowling byBret Haynes also, and on anyother day he would have won.He had some bad luck on that 10pin for sure. Bret is one of thegood guys! Bad Beat Bret!!

Nice to all in our club! GreatBowling! The same can be saidfor Kmel Cunanan who bowledso well at Keystone!

Champions Crowned at InauguralDenny’s All-American

High School ChampionshipsGRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—With bright lights, ESPN television

cameras and the pressure of bowling for thousands of dollars inscholarships, two players emerged as champions Sunday of theinaugural Denny’s All-American High School Championships.

Ellen Morrison of Winnebago, Ill., and Jonathan Buckert of Roch-ester, N.Y., each earned $3,000 scholarships by defeating their op-ponents at DeVos Place. Morrison won her match 210-190 overKayla Stamm of Shillington, Pa., while Buckert defeated Christo-pher David Ray of Granite City, Ill., 213-170.

The event, which was conducted in an arena-setting on the samelanes as the Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association World Cham-pionship earlier in the day, is scheduled to be televised on ESPN onApril 22 at 1 p.m.Eastern.

Buckert, the 2007 USBC Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow, struckseven times in the boys’ championship match to earn the title.

“It was really hot with the lights and I was a little nervous, butit was fun,” Buckert said. “This proves that all my hard work andeffort has really paid off.”

In the girls’ championship match, Morrison, who has two Illi-nois individual state high school titles to her credit, threw a strike onthe first ball in the final frame to lock up the victory.

“This has been really cool and I think it’s amazing that kids arebeing given the opportunity to experience an event like this,” Morrisonsaid.

“I thought I was going to be a lot more nervous than I really was,but once I got out there and started making shots I calmed down.”

To wrap up Sunday’s finals, Morrison and Buckert teamed upwith a couple of PBA stars in a doubles showdown. Morrison andKelly Kulick defeated Buckert and Tony Reyes 256-233.

The Denny’s All-American High School Championships show-cased 29 varsity high school athletes from 15 states. All playerscompeted in eight games of qualifying Saturday morning before thefield was cut to the top six boys and top six girls, who competed inmatch play to determine the four players on the TV finals.

For their second-place efforts, Ray and Stamm each received a$2,000 scholarship, bringing the total awarded at the event to$10,000.

Denny’s, the PBA and the United States Bowling Congress joinedtogether to create the new tournament for recognized varsity levelhigh school bowlers. The 29 participants were selected based ontheir bowling skills as well as personal and academic achievements.

LAKE FOREST--Lake For-est Lanes’ 9 p.m. Thursday 615Scratch Trios’ fourth segmenttitle race is getting serious. Team4 made a giant move last weektaking 16 of a possible 17 pointsfrom challengers Team 11 to bol-ster their lead.

The scoring wasn’t friendly.Team 4 chopped enough woodwithout honor scores to take 16from Team 11. Bill Brossartpaced the leaders with a 691 us-ing scores of 225, 264 and 202.Chip Southerland and captainHerbert “Spiderman” Jones bothhit 650’s based on 222’s totaling1991.

Team 2, the first seeded trio, led overall team scoring with a2035. Leadoff man Mike Belairdid some fancy shooting; firstpicking up the 4-6-7-10 split, a260 game and a 709 series.Teammate Mario Marquez hadthe evening’s best series, 741with a 269 game.

Tim Timmerman of Team 9sandwiched an evening high 278between games of 213 and 201for a 692 set.

Perhaps the best scoringcame after the league when abouta dozen players contributed toan old fashion pot game.

You remember, everybody

went across 10 lanes. Before the automatic scorers,

a super scorekeeper signed ‘emin and tallied ‘em up. LastThursday that scorekeeper wasMike Tucker who had watchedhis father Frank do it. Pop toldhim, “going across ten lanes isthe only fair way to go, no ‘pie’alleys”.

They used the first 10 lanes,Mike explained, starting the firstgame on lane one, second gameon two, and so on.

Stringing strikes is a littletougher, but as the evening getson it is amazing how fast theplayers find the track.

A few fans who stayed onfor the pot games told about theold days at Del Rio Lanes andRon North’s Thursday 950Masters games. Thursday waspay day, cash in envelope--theyplayed for big dough and hadplenty of scorekeepers--tipswere good.

Maywood, Lynwood andHuntington Park academieshosted the Glasshouse, Trans-portation and Foundrymen’sLeague games. They had bleach-ers and the games went ‘til thewee hours.

Sweetness quote of the week: “Oh look a first aid kit”.

CHEAP TRICKS MEDICATIONS FOR “SPLITS R US”

AND OTHER VIRUSES PART 2THE “CHOPS R US” CURE

Have you ever asked yourself why, in spite of having thrownaccurately to your mark on a multi pin spare you chopped it any-way? Well, in case you are one of those mid or high average bowlerswho suffer from that cherry-picking disease too often, I suggest arather simple solution which allows use of a one board foot adjust-ment instead of the three we used for splits (covered last month). Assimple as it is, I’ve been consistently surprised by how manybowlers weren’t using it, so we’ll describe it here.

This rule applies to all multiple pin spares except splits! Itbasically says that to pick up a multiple pin spare, shoot for theside of the key (front) pin which will cause the ball (not the pin) todeflect into the remaining pins. To do this, merely adjust your feetone board right (or left) of the normal board you would stand on forthat key pin and shoot for the same mark. A single board footadjustment will cause the ball to hit the key pin on the side oppositeto the direction of that adjustment (a one board foot adjustmentequals 2 inches at the pins).

Some examples: For a 3-6-10, stand one board left of your nor-mal 3 pin position. The ball hits the right side of the key pin (the 3)and deflects into the 6, also taking out the 10. For a 3-5 (or a rare 3-5-8) however, you would stand one board right, because now youwant the ball to deflect off the left side of the 3 and into the 5 andthe 8. For a 2-4-5-7, stand one board right of your normal 2 pin footposition, thus making the ball hit the left side of the 2 pin whichdeflects into the 5, while the ball takes out the 4-7. (Left handersreverse this for the 3-5-6-10 There are many others, of course. Theobvious purpose of this tactic is to always make the ball deflect offthe key pin into the greatest possible number of accompanyingpins. The vast majority of such attempts should be straight ballshots, because lane condition variances on various parts of the lanesurface will have no effect on a truly straight ball, thus increasingyour conversion rate.

One of the rare exceptions to this straight ball rule would be the2-8 spare, where a Brooklyn strike ball is best for right handers; butfor the 3-9 the usual straight ball nose shot to the 3 is best (lefthanders reverse this; throw a Brooklyn hook shot to the 3-9, but astraight shot to the 2 to convert the 2-8).

For bucket spares, it’s a mistake throw Brooklyn strike shots. Why? Because Brooklyn shots are supposed to miss the 5. So hereI also suggest a straight shot to the nose of the front (key) pin. Evenon the pro tour I see right handers sometimes miss a simple 4 pin, because even a slight hook ball hits middle oil and slides by on theinside of the pin. So for most off center spare shots the straight ballhas been proven more successful. After all, a really straight ball willgo straight no matter what the lane condition! Remember, the onlyreason you have to live with the constantly changing variables ofthrowing a hook on a strike shot is to gain entry angle, which isn’tneeded on simple spares. Obviously, the more variables you caneliminate on spare shots, the less open frames!

This is a “cheap trick” with an excellent scoring payoff.THE EYES HAVE IT

Talking about cheap tricks, this next one can answer two ques-tions for bowlers concerning the “dominant eye” situation, which isa part of every human being’s legacy, yet often creates accuracyproblems. There is much excellent material available on this subjectin scientific journals and we’ve covered it before, so we won’t do itagain.

But here’s what’s important to you right now: A) Is there aneasier way to determine your dominant eye and, b) How can anyeffects it may have on your bowling be quickly identified? Theseitems are important because the degree of eye dominance can varyfrom person to person. This often causes an optical illusion, whichprevents many bowlers from being able to accurately hit the markthey’re looking at. Worse, they may not even know which boardthey actually hit after the shot.

Right or left eye dominance has no relation whatever to beingright or left handed. A vast majority of the population is right eyepredominant, including most left handers.

THE ‘CHEAP TRICK’ EYE PREDOMINANCE TEST ONTHE LANES

As far as I know, the following “cheap trick” has never beenmentioned, so you’re reading it here first (though I’ve taught it foryears):1- Stand in the center of the approach, center dot between your feet.2- Look at the fourth (center) arrow.3- Note that arrow appears to be off center.4- If the arrow appears to be left of center, you are right eye pre-dominant; if it appears to be right of center, you are left eye pre-dominant. This is because the dominant eye seems to “push” thatarrow toward the opposite side, creating that off center illusion.Eye doctors have different tests by which you can determine whicheye is dominant, but if you’re in a bowling center, why bother?Once you know which eye is dominant, vision experts agree itvirtually never changes. So for those of you who don’t yet knowwhich eye is dominant, this is the “cheap trick” that’ll instantly tellyou. (If you already know your dominant eye, read onanyway…there’s more.)5-Next, to determine the degree of dominance of that eye, try tojudge approximately how many boards off center that arrow ap-pears to be. Some report as little as a board or two, while to othersit looks to be as many as five boards away from center. This vari-ance is one possible reason why some bowlers consistently missshots on the same side. There are, as you know, numbers of otherpossible reasons for missing the mark. But if you consistently seeyour ball hitting your mark, while your coach or other onlookersdisagree, that difference in “spotting” can nearly always be attrib-uted to dominant eye causes. The person watching the bowler canvirtually always correctly see which board has been hit. Tests have

shown that even a bowler who can’t identify his/her own shotsaccurately, seems to have no problem spotting it correctly whenwatching another bowler.

FURTHER EXPERIMENTSAnother thing I’ve never heard mentioned is the fact that the

same bowlers who “see” the fourth arrow as being off center by 3 ormore boards, can look at the pins and easily see that the head pin (orthe 5 pin) is indeed in the center of the lane. It seems that somehow,at a lesser or greater distance from the eyes than the arrows, sightlines seem more accurate. This is more than just an idle observation, and here’s what was done to check it out

Several high average bowlers who consistently see their marks 3to 5 boards off , due to exaggerated left or right eye dominance, weretested. They were asked to throw strike shots, not to their mark, butto their break point target…then to say whether the ball hit ormissed that break point after each shot and if it missed, by howmuch and in which direction. This was done on lane 40 of a 40 lanehouse, with a spotter down lane to check the accuracy of the bowlers’calls. So far, the bowlers tested were all able to accurately see andcall their balls’ hits and misses at the break point after nearly everyshot, even though unable to do it even once at the arrows!

One of these bowlers, for example, is a former PWBA championwho has won several pro tournaments. Her sight to the arrow tar-gets has always been off by about 4 boards, forcing her to look 3 to4 boards right of her intended target board to be able to hit it. Yet hersight line to her break point tested “dead on”.

THE BOTTOM LINEIncidentally, CATS machine analysis shows that over half the

bowlers tested can neither hit a mark at the arrows consistently, noraccurately identify which board they have hit after the shot. If suchbowlers can be more accurate to a selected break point, that obvi-ously provides an additional reason for break point techniques tobecome an important goal for all serious bowlers.

When I started reaching Sam Baca’s break point techniques nearly30 years ago, nobody wanted to hear it. Today, virtually everyprofessional shoots for the break point! Baca has made the conceptuser friendly, not only to you league and tournament bowlers, but tous the teachers and coaches as well. Certainly, if inaccuracies causedby eye dominance can be overcome by break point targeting, aver-ages must go up. I wonder…is that really a cheap trick?

FOUNTAIN VALLY – Thispast Sunday, the JAT Farm Clubtook to the lanes at FountainBowl with 32 bowlers in atten-dance. The scoring started out alittle slow, but really picked upduring the later rounds. We thankthe center management and stafffor hospitality on the day.

The qualifying round startedoff with DeeRonn Bookershowing us that high scores werepossible by putting up a 268game in his mix of five. DeeRonnwas followed by Rafael Ceja246, Justin Foster 244, MarkCurtis 226-223-224, Brent Shern234-225, Albert Fernandez 234,Darren Pascual 224, Charlie Hair222, Eddie Sayles 222, DarrinChoi 221, Victor Hilvano 221,and Deanna Carrillo 221. Mr.Booker led the group after fivegames at plus 66, while the 16th

spot to advance came in at mi-nus 100.

In match play it was AaronSteinberg making his move withgames including 247-269-242and the claim to tournament highgame. Booker kept pace withhighs of 232-220-257 and oth-ers were Curtis 255, Fernandez222-220-246, Teddie Carter 244,Hair 238, Ceja 236-235-235,Choi 236, Kevin Jones 235, andShern 224. Steinberg andFernandez made movement of 7positions to get into the finalround, but Ceja jumped 10 po-sitions to become the alternate.
