In a low scoring match on the demanding 40-foot PBA Bear lane condition, Rash beat rival and top qualifier Jason Belmonte, 178-161, in the title match of the fourth event of the PBA Fall Swing. The finals aired Wednesday on CBS Sports Network. As the tournament lead- er, Belmonte had his choice of selecting the Wolf, Bear or Badger Fall Swing lane oil patterns and chose the Bear pattern. While neither player could get into a rhythm, Rash was helped by strikes in the first three of four frames. A missed single pin spare by three-time reign- ing PBA Player of the Year Belmonte was a portent of things to come as he left a 3-4-6-7 split in the fourth frame and a 3-4-6-7-10 split in the ninth frame, failing to convert either one. “This (lane condition- ing) pattern will eat you up,” said Rash, who was the No. 2 qualifier for the finals. “It’s probably the toughest condition we bowl on. It can be like an obsta- cle course. “You take a tough con- dition like this and then you throw in the changing envi- ronment of bowling on TV where there are so many variables, from the chang- ing lane conditions frame- to-frame to the different styles of the players in the earlier matches,” Rash con- tinued. “It’s not like bowl- ing on league night, believe me.” Belmonte notched his third top-five finish in four Fall Swing events after finishing third in the Wolf Open and fourth in the Bad- ger Open, but his bid for his first title of 2016 escape him once again. 2016 PBA Detroit Open Champion Sean Rash Bowling news DETROIT — Back-to- back victories in the PBA Fall Swing Badger Open and Detroit Open for his 10th and 11th career titles made Sean Rash the 51st player in PBA history to win at least 10 PBA Tour titles. After winning his 10th career PBA Tour title in the PBA Badger Open last week, former PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash didn’t waste any time start-ing on his next 10 titles by winning the PBA Detroit Open for his second con-secutive win in the final championship event of the 2016 PBA Fall Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes.

SAN BERNARDINO — We are bowlers, we are “Olympians”, we tip our hats to La Keisha Jackson. She is the Senior Olympics Coordinator for the Inland Empire of CALIFORNIA.

La Keisha is an outstanding coordinator, efficient and still accommodating. Because she loves working with and for seniors, she is the heart and soul of our senior games. She attended every senior game and event. She was there as our senior bowlers competed and was the official pre-senting us with our medals: Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Best of all La Keisha is a people person. While attend-ing our competition she greeted every bowler with a huge smile. A smile that said welcome before she said a word. Then she followed with encouraging words. She took in-terest in everyone there and how they were doing. She circulated amongst the bowlers, spoke with everyone and listened to what each had to say.

Every bowlers experience was made special because she Injected her personal touch into every aspect of our competition. We all had a good time, win or lose, because of her.

While the Senior Olympics featured competition in five sports (billiards, bowling, horseshoes, swimming and track) La Keisha made us bowlers feel like our sport was the featured sport of the games. Thank you Ms. Jackson.

Therefore, we “TIP OUR HATS” to La Keisha Jackson in gratitude for her making our experience memorable. We want everyone to know that BOWLERS are apprecia-tive. We appreciate you and your efforts on our behalf.

If a player doesn’t meet the 10 title minimum re-quirement for eligibility, the alternative is five stan-dard PBA Tour titles plus two majors. Mike Scrog-gins (eight titles including two majors) is member-ship-eligible and title-eligi-ble under the alternate cri-teria (for the record, Rash, Barnes, Jones, Koivuni-emi, Allen and Belmonte also have won at least two majors among their total titles).

When a player achieves both title and years of membership requirements, he is automatically put on the PBA Hall of Fame bal-lot. Scroggins, Goebel and Hoskins are currently on the PBA Hall of Fame bal-lot, which requires a can-didate to receive votes on at least two-thirds of bal-lots cast for election to the hall of fame. stepladder final will be used at Bowlium Lanes to determine the champion.

Last year, the Forest Donkeys team nailed down the state title after advanc-ing out of Forest Lanes. The five members were Jessica Diso, Virgil Dunzi-ellas, Robert Leahy, Brent Ilagan and Jon Diso.

The Donkeys breezed to a 207-146 victory in the championship match of the stepladder final, earning the $1,000 top prize. This year, the champion is guaranteed to win at least $1,555.

Last year, the second-place team received $700 and the third-place team claimed $400.

The cost to participate in the tournament is $115 per team, or $23 per person.

In the semifinal match, Rash beat 10-time Tour winner and 2009 Player of the Year Wes Malott, 202-198, striking out in the 10th frame to take the four-pin victory. Rash also had defeated Malott, 259-195, in the title match of the Badger Open.

“I didn’t get off to a great start in the match (against Malott), so I was grateful to be in a position where I could win,” said Rash, who won PBA Player of the Year hon-ors for the 2011-12 season. “I just stayed with the game plan of playing straighter, keep the ball in play and fill the frames. I could have probably done better but I did good enough to win.”

Rash was the first player to win back-to-back in 2016, joining Jesper Svensson (three titles) and fellow two-time winners E.J. Tackett and Ryan Ciminelli as the year’s only multiple title winners.

The Detroit Open finalists earned their berths in the stepladder finals by finishing in the top five after a com-bined total of 36 games in the Wolf, Bear and Badger Open qualifying rounds. Belmonte led finalists with a combined 229.9 average on the three vastly different lane conditions.

In the first match of the finals, Tackett, the Bear Open winner and No. 5 qualifier, defeated Wolf Open winner and No. 4 qualifier Tom Daugherty, 231-159. In the sec-ond match, No. 3 qualifier Malott eliminated Tackett, 201-195, to advance to the semifinal against Rash.

All five Detroit Open finalists also qualified for the fi-nals of the King of the Swing special event which will air Oct. 19 at 9 p.m. ET on the CBS Sports Network. Daugh-erty, Tackett and Rash earned their spots in the final event as Wolf, Bear and Badger Open titlists, respectively. Be-cause Rash won two events, Malott and Belmonte also earned spots as the top players in Fall Swing points.

Five Divisions traveling to five different centers - - - with a grand roll-off at season’s end.• PIONEER BOWL rounded up the bowlers for a “Shoot Out” and a “BAR-B-Q.” Early birds catch the worms!• COSTA MESA had an older center named VAN’S BOWLING ALLEY. 2 guys bought it, put in 18 new pinsetters and called it MESA LANES. Did it have the highest control desk desk on record?• TROPICANA LANES came up with a thing called “Boom-erang”. The format was simple. Pay $1.10 en-try fee. Roll 5 balls across 5 lanes, twice. Total pin fall is your score.• CONNIE MARCHIONE started writing his column about deaf bowlers. And, still writing today 53 years later. Connie is known world wide for his coverage of the deaf news, organizing tournaments, being a squad organizer, bowler, Hall of Famer, league Presi-dent, and Champion. Connie — I love you. • Spook Berry, a Lancaster roller, nailed a six gamer with scores of 279, 279, 200, 279, 279 and 259.• STEVE and EILEEN NAGY were at BANNING BOWL at the helm of their 18th Washington Birthday Singles. • For Sale — Snack Bar inside AVALON LANES on Catalina Island.• For Sale — 16 Lane Alley, with bar and cafe in West L.A. $15,000.00 gets you in. • Dan Chovan, the great San Diego star really started to shine by winning all of the events in their city tournament. Dan continued to burn up the lanes for over 20 years. Speaking of the San Diego area, where was COMANCHE BOWL located? I moved to La Mesa in 1963, and don’t remember a COMAN-CHE BOWL — but I do remember BOWLERO in Mission Valley. Huge and way ahead of its time. Just a lousy location and didn’t last long.• Joe Parra opened his first supply shop. 30 years later he was still drillling and handing out advice.• Billy Myers Senior, was known as the “Southpaw Flame Thrower”. Wonder if he ever teamed up with Norm Myers? What a combo that would have been!• The California Bowling News was named the #1 Publication in the U.S.A. (76 years have gone by and now we are one of 6 remaining.)• CLARK CENTER gave all their league bowlers a card which entitled them to open play at 2 cents a frame all summer. That’s about five games for a dollar.• Braasch Bowling Supply became a sponsor for many great teams. Some were even captained by Dick himself. He’s got a lot of good stories!• “Bowl Down Cancer” programs were run weekly in hundreds of centers in the U.S. Fifty-three years later (and billions of dollars later) we are still losing family and friends AND still chasing the cure.• Joe Kirkwood (Joe Palooka) scored a knockout when he bought KIRKWOOD BOWL. It was very popular. So was Joe. Even in his over-alls and red socks! He even predicted adding 32 lanes!• Top women bowlers in 1963? Robbie Frey, Wilma Anderson, D.D. Jacobson, Merle Matthews, Betty Phillips, Helen Duval, Hope Riccilli, Esther Woods, Judy Lee, Juanita Rich, Doris Rudell, Rose Butcher, Marge Fox — Just to name a few. Lots of press space but no $ $ $.• The beautiful Barbara Eden was pictured in VERY short shorts and high heels standing at the foul line ready to deliver a ball. The Bowling News was noted for picturing leggy women in shorts. No one was ever given credit for the pictures?? Who WAS the photog-rapher? • Lake Forest College had a bowling program which included lessons, leagues and even pinsetter main-tenance.• Bart Starr (Packer Quarterback) was appointed di-rector of youth activities of a corporation that owned 40 centers. That was in his spare time. • 5 winners of the Herald-Examiner Men’s Singles would receive a Buick Sports Coupe. Entry fee $3.25. 21 centers were running qualifiers.• The Bowling Writers named Betty Phillips and Andy Marzich top “Bowlers of the Year”. That’s it for the first six months of 1963. Watch for Part II.

DOWNEY — The Brunswick Invitational headed into the home stretch of Round 1 as teams fought for position with one week to go. Parkin’s Bowling Supply had a chance to further distance themselves from the pack with just five more available points after this week.

In the “A” match, Parkin’s Bowling Supply looked to extend their 3 game lead over Century 21 – My Real Estate. Parkin’s Bowling Supply kept up their win streak with a sweep though this week they actually put up some real numbers to win the games. Buddy Lucas led Parkin’s Bowling Supply and the league with a huge 856 set while Joe Jimenez posted 706 for Century 21. Parkin’s Bowling Supply will be in the “A” match next week needing only one point against Linder’s to take the round.

In the “B” match, Linder’s Insurance and Team 20 battled to stay relevant in the round. Linder’s kept their chances at the round alive with a 4-1 win over Team 20. Linder’s sits at 22 wins and will need a sweep just to tie and force a rolloff next week. Jello Grey paced Linder’s with a 680 set while Matt Mosley led Team 20 at 631.

Team 10 and Team 12 matched up to try and remain relevant in the hunt for the round. Team 12 swept right past Team 10 but their 20 wins will not put them close enough for a shot next week. Kevin Gagnon went big for Team 12 with a nice 783 set while Mikey Villarreal was the only man to crack six at 622 for Team 10.

Sysco and Threadworks were battling for season-wins as both teams were nearly mathematically eliminated from the round. Sysco got back to their striking ways putting up a big 2733 set to sweep through Threadworks. Paul Barraco once again paced Sysco with a nice 735 set while Butch Jackson led Threadworks with a 650 series.

Keystone Lanes and Team 16 battled in the 9 vs. 10 matchup. Keystone came out big and took 4 from Team 16 paced by the one-two punch of Herbert Jones’ 731 and Eddie VanDaniker’s 724. Gary Duran’s 706 helped Team 16 take their one game.

DV8 and Cal Bowl put their near .500 records on the line in the 11 vs. 12 matchup. DV8 edged out game one by 4 sticks but it was all Cal Bowl from there taking 4 wins. Ramon Torres struck big for Cal Bowl with a 706 series while Michelle Tran went huge for DV8 with a nice 758 set.

Forest Lanes and J.A.T. met up for the second time this round. Once again it was Forest Lanes getting the best of J.A.T. with 4 wins after dropping the first game. Mike Mellick went big for Forest with a 712 capping off their 1018 last game locking up total pins. Larry Campbell led J.A.T. with a solid 707 set.

Professional Approach and Team 9 matched up in the battle of the 15 vs. 16. Professional Approach cruised to the sweep behind Ramiro Garcia’s 720 set. Sub Dan Gartin paced Team 9 with a nice 649 series.

Team 3, Smirnoff, Gym W.R.A.T.T. Fitness and Crown Roy-al rounded out Monday’s matches. Both matches ended up 4-1 with Team 3 and Gym W.R.A.T.T. pocketing the wins. Lindsey Wong super-subbed his way to lead the Gym boys at 657, Matt Schermerhorn was perfect 300-743 to pace Team 3, Dave Schiada led Crown Royal at 637 and Vernon Adams went big for Smirnoff at 774.

Honor scores tonight for Matt Schermerhorn with a perfect 300 and Buddy Lucas with a huge 279-288-289-856 series. Sidepots went to Jello Gray (290) and Ramiro Garcia/Bobby Campagnale (279) for $75 each. Super pot was Kevin Gagnon (269) for $225. Financial Advisor’s pot paid to Buddy Lucas (289) for $200 and second to Ramiro Garcia/Bobby Campagnale (279) for $50 each. Come on out and watch the round wrap up next Monday night and catch the action of Southern California’s best scratch league!

DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!
