Update on Juanita Blocker by Phyl Knoll LOS ANGELES—Juanita has continued to struggle to re- gain her health since having emer- gency major surgery last year for a blockage in her intestinal track. Seniors Share Memory Laneby Betty L. Derry

ARCADIA—As a slightly-gullible and innocent growing up inthe corn belt state of Iowa during the Depression Days, I heardoften a phrase from adult lips that held admonishment and fervor ofa quality that grabbed my short adolescent attention span, mostlybecause the words bespoke of a “forbidden fruit” existence thatwould, one day, entice post-puberty persons and that was.... “Nicepeople do not frequent pool halls, beer joints, gambling houses and, lastly, bowling alleys!”

And so it wasn’t until I was the co-titular head of my ownhousehold that I took up one of the four named above - bowling -and discovered that “some of my best friends are bowlers!” Sixtyyears later (and I am counting!) bowling with some 120 Seniorsevery Tuesday and Thursday at Action Lanes in El Monte, is a full-blown adventure the minute I hit the front door of this beautifullyremodeled Alley. Truly, I am delighted when the key to my lockerworks the first time and the smell of coffee permeates the desig-nated area which has become my comfort zone two days a week.Perfection would be served if homestyle buttermilk donuts framesreplaced the traditional “beer” frames, but that isn’t going to hap-pen anytime soon, now is it?

Seniors who have traveled every journeyed path congregate on adaily basis at Alleys across the nation; and there is no doubt thebowler in Des Moines suffers the same confliction as the bowlerwho obsesses on properly knotted shoestrings on properly pow-dered bowling shoes two thousand miles away in sunny SouthernCalifornia. It is not “misery” that loves company as we have beenled to believe for lo these many years. It is the “bowler” who knowsdeep down that the next game will be The 300 Game, and loves/needs the company of a League of Bowlers to witness this definitepossibility. This expectation is not to be underestimated... .it couldhappen! Most days, the final scores of these seniors who come forexercise, fellowship, constructive criticism and kudos, of whichthere are plenty to go around, reflect an attitude of “nothing to it!”

Knocking down 300 pins in No Tap play can be child’s play forsome of the more experienced bowlers while neophytes are ap-plauded and appreciated for their handsome handicaps. It’s the pinaction as the most modest of all bowlers would say.

Senior bowling has enhanced the lives and the health of these“young at heart” that ignore, for the most part, the aches and painsthat are alleviated by an early-morning full-body rub-down withAsperçreme or Blue Emu. Magnetic wraps are good, too, but havebeen known to wipe out credit cards which could prove to be em-barrassing when treating the gang at the nearest Krispy Kreme hang-out. Revered, along with the day’s high game, is the socializing thatgoes on amongst the citizenry. Latest remedies, including the highlypopular VicksVapoRub treatment for most every condition exceptlabor pains and the newest, Castiva, made out of castor oil and otherby-products purchased at better drugstores everywhere, are dis-cretely discussed.

Still experiencing a deeply ingrained sense of post-adolescentcuriosity, I recently conducted a spontaneous survey pertaining tothe “earning quarters” years of my fellow guy-and-doll bowlers.Small talk is permitted when bowling, of course, but “What did youdo before you retired?” hooked the interest of some who eagerlyresponded. Impressive, outstanding, you’re kidding! Wow! .. .alldescriptive of vocations held during those pre-Social Security yearsby some of”my new best friends.” I did not know until I asked thattwo bowlers celebrate their 90th birthday this year and improvingwith age which gives me hope. One of these two is a former orches-tra leader (in the manner of Woody Herman) and a member of LosAngeles symphony orchestra in his salad days. Ballroom dancing, preceded by a career with Pacific Bell, still scores big for the other, the widow of a major league baseball player out of Chicago whoplayed against the likes of Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio ascenterfielder for the Cleveland Indians and the Milwaukee Brewersin the early 1930’s. Even President Dwight Eisenhower did notknow that his cousin, two times removed, personally installed thehand sewn carpet fit for a president in Ike’s personal cabin space onAir Force One; and as his cousin was telling me... “When one lookedat the carpet at floor level, it appeared that the carpet “actuallymoved.” Still taking pride in his craftsmanship, my bowling buddy

spoke the names of Gene Kelly,Dorothy Dandridge, AnneFrancis, and Dolly Parton and“The Rifleman” - ChuckConnors as carpet clients, prom-ising stories of sometimes con-trary celebrities as league seasonprogressed.

Smiles broadened as tidbitswere shared around the anchoredtables. Past achievements weremet with “ooohs” and “ahhhhs”.The willowy grandmother toldof her employment as a matron/guard at the famous Taycheedah,Wisconsin Women’s StatePrison from which the infamous“Bambi” escaped some yearsago... but not on her watch! TheExplorer was sent into orbit viaJPL and the General Dynamics’Red Eye Project completed un-der the watchflul eye of yet an-other of our “Grams,” a researchengineer. The Industrial Artsschool teacher and cosmetologisteach an owner of a local restau-rant, the secretary to a concertpianist, the insurance salesman, the used car dealer, the militaryveterans, the gateman at SantaAnita Race Track, financial con-sultants and business CEO’S arebut a few of the many who com-prise compatible groups of threeor four, determined to cross offthe day’s little annoyances butnot cross over the foul line atany of the 32 lanes at ActionLane.

Culled from those designingand installing carpets to explor-ing outer space, from those driv-ing big rigs, Greyhounds andschool buses to typing churchbulletins, from those milkingcows to composing advertisingto sell the milk, from those head-ing up port security to profes-sional boxing, from those pio-neering in the computer/geek cat-egory to medical technicians, from those shepherding actorsand actresses during perfor-mances at the San Gabriel Com-munity Playhouse to roundingup bowlers for the semi-annualVegas jaunts, from those in thenews media to beer brewers, themost-senior population at Ac-tion Lanes has regenerated a zestand enthusiasm for a once-dwin-dling participatory sport. Theunparalleled joy of seeing astring of strikes on the animatedelectronic scoreboard lives onlong after the dinner dishes aredone, the garbage can lids re-settled, and the lights turned offat the end of one fine day, andthat same unrelenting joy re-mains strong harboring the un-spoken thought that the nexttime the 7-10 split happens hey, anything’s possible,. And as weare pointedly admonished to doso by that young whipper-snap-per 60-ish Dennis Hopper ontelevision, this truly-experi-enced generation takes unbridleddelight in agreeing that one isnever too old to dream... caneven make it happen!

Memories...by Joy McGregor

Many of you bowlers out there know Hall of Famer ChuckTuma. Chuck’s dear wife Marian contacted me a few weeks ago tolet me know that he, unfortunately, is in the first stages of Alzheimer’sdisease and can no longer compete in his beloved sport of bowling.

She thought his many, many friends would like to know and thatit would please him to no end if they could send a card.

Just a few tidbits of Chuck’s life….His family settled in OrangeCounty when he was only 7 years of age. His father was CityTreasurer until his untimely death at age 45 then he lived with hismother, aunt and sister. Chuck attended Anaheim High and gradu-ated in 1929.

His illustrious bowling career began shortly after graduation whenhe joined a league at Santa Ana Recreation Center and bowled withJohnny Johnson. He also bowled at Kona Lanes with the late, greatDick Stoeffler. Chuck knew ALL the “stars” and bowled with themtoo: Glenn Allison, Rocky Marsh, Fred Riccilli and even the “Great-est”, Earl “The Pearl” Anthony. He truly enjoyed those years andlearned much about the sport of bowling; not only technique butalso etiquette on the lanes which, he felt, was SO very important. He never forgot the “simple” rules of the game and lived by themthroughout his bowling career. As the 1946 season got into fullswing, so did Chuck. He scored the very first 300 game to be bowledin league play at the Santa Ana Recreation Center and holds thedistinction of being the 3rd bowler to roll a 300 ever recorded inOrange County history at that time. He was also a member of thechampionship team of the very first Orange County Bowling Asso-ciation Tournament.

When the 1950’s rolled around, we saw Chuck continue his com-petition in Orange County, Long Beach and Los Angeles classicleagues where he was beginning to be known as “That tough shooterfrom Orange County”. In 1956 Chuck won the singles and all eventsdivision of the OCBA Tournament, and also took second place in theprestigious Examiner Classic.

Chuck met and married his one true love Marian, in 1956 andthey just celebrated 51 years of wedded bliss this past April 1st. Shenever indicated that they met in a bowling center but, chancesare…They have three fine children and are a close knit family.

The 1960’s continued to see Chuck carry the Orange Countybanner to the lanes and Fashion Lanes in Santa Ana was the settingof his 297 game in 1967. Starting into his sixth decade of his associa-tion with the game of bowling, Chuck still hadn’t shown any signs ofslowing down and saw him capture numerous other awards.

Even after retiring in 1972, Chuck still stayed active in his gameof bowling. The records show he has been active in starting thingsfor bowling all of his life. 1981 was no exception as he became acharter member of the first Senior Scratch Travel League in the UnitedStates. Then bowling in league at Carter Bowl in 1982 at age 72,Chuck showed them all that he could still “string ‘em when it counts”by rolling a 737 series. He was a proud member of the OrangeEmpire Travel League which he loved and where he met many, manyfriends and formed lasting friendships.

Not only has Chuck been a devoted participating bowler over theyears, he has also worked behind the scenes too. Starting from 1948,when he worked as a lane maintenance man in Santa Ana, he also heldvarious positions behind the approaches. He was Bowling Com-missioner for Northrop Aviation Anaheim (1950-52); a deskman, league coordinator and a manager at Futurama Lanes (1956-60) anda pro-shop owner. Both he and Marian bowled together and heldoffice in the Regal Lanes Bowling Club, traveling to many centersaway from Orange County. Chuck was also a director on the OCBAboard for several years. He also bowled in eight ABC nationaltournaments and was active in the National 700 Club of America.

I first met Chuck at College Bowl. Do you all remember thatreally neat bowling center on State College Blvd.?? Well, that wasmy first league experience and Chuck owned and operated the ProShop. He was such a personable man and very informative. He surehelped my bowling! He would very often come out and watch usand could tell at a glance, what we were doing wrong. Thanks forthat, Chuck; you were a great teacher!

Many years after College Bowl closed, I remember seeing himwhen my Orange County Travel Trio league would cross with hisleague at good ol’ Orange Bowl (also now closed.) One day he wasjust coming in the door (thank goodness they were automatic) pull-ing his bowling equipment with one hand and balancing a very largebox of donuts in the other. I jokingly asked if I could relieve his loadby taking a donut; know what he replied? “Sure, but you could helpmore if you’d just pull my bowling equipment!” What a guy and,oh yes, I DID get a yummy donut. That was Chuck!!

Chuck was installed into the Orange County Hall of Fame in1991 in the Superior Performance category and Marian says it wasone of the most memorable days of his life, knowing the purpose isto honor, pay tribute to, and to perpetuate the names of thosebowlers who have contributed to the growth and welfare of the greatsport of bowling by their ability and/or through meritorious service. For his eight decades of bowling prowess we feel Chuck certainlydeserves his place and his smiling face adds grace to the wonderfulHall of Fame wall. I hope everyone has been able to view this “wall”of Fame featuring the best of the best in the Orange County bowlingworld, located inside La Habra “300” Bowl; if not, you’d bettertoddle on down and take a look – you won’t be disappointed!

Marian asks if y’all would be so kind to send cards in care of:Marian Tuma, Tuscany Village, 525 West La Palma Ave., Anaheim,92801. She says she knows he would really, really enjoy hearingfrom anyone. His eyes and ears are still good. She faithfully readshis mail to him EVERY single day; he still has that twinkle in hiseyes and still smiles and, remembers…..for now!

MAIL BAGTo Whom It May Concern:

My age is 85 and I bowl three days a week in league bowling atMatador Bowl in Northridge.

I had a strange experience the other morning in practice that mayhave been the first time it has ever happened in the history of bowl-ing.

I am right handed and where many people have trouble with the10-pin in spares, I don’t. What gives me heart aches is the left side ofthe lane. My nemesis are the 4 and 7-pins. I was practicing one gameprior to league play and half way through my game I went for the 4/7 corner. I hit it flush and for some miracle they all fell for a strike. Icouldn’t believe it and neither did the persons watching me.

Sincerely,Bill Fleishman

Middle-Men “Carry” Forest Lanes 615 Scratch Trios To Loop Victory

by Frank KietzLAKE FOREST — In the Scratch Trios at Forest Lanes, middle-

men (low average) are usually surrounded by plus 200 average play-ers. They sweat, hope he can carry a few pins over — we’ll win!

That’s what happened last Thursday. Team 2 started the summerseason with a trio national second place record of 2319 then driftingto a 1713 (16-1 point loss) their middle man, Jeff Copeland, sparkedMike Belair and Mario Marquez to produce a big 600 and a 708enough wood to garner a season-first 17-0 sweep, 699/2043 bring-ing them up to fourth place.

John Sowell is lucky his middle-men, Jason Kubanis and TimHall, carry 220 averages while he totes a 231. Yup, his Team 6 is infirst place, 22 points over Team 9 and 10.

Team 9 has Frank Patton carrying a fair load with brothers Michaeland Francisco Trejo covering them with nifty 200s.

Team 10, Ashkan Tahvildara, Sam Hitchcock and Paul Danforth, got whacked by the leaders, 14-3.

Teams 6 and 9 will play tonight’s position round on lanes 33-34while Teams 10 and 2 battle on lanes 35-36.

Can the national high scorers continue last Thursday’s perfectsweep? They are giving Team Ten 11 pins, 670 to 659.

Handicappers think it isn’t the average; it’s the spirit, team spirit.Who can carry? Team 6’s Tim or 10’s Frank, or on 35-36, Sam orJeff.

Center Manager Allan Mac Duffee says I think we have OrangeCounty’s finest bowlers in our 9:00 p.m. Thursday scratch league.Another group of Southland pin-stars will be here 1:00 p.m. Satur-day, June 23rd competing in our $300 guaranteed first place SixGamer.

Bowling VictimOf “Blue” Laws?

by Frank KietzLAKE FOREST — Bowling,

tenpin, ninepin, skittles, boccie,lawn, etc.

On the surface the games seemto be welcome world wide. Ifyou look closely some folks, groups, institutions, so forthdon’t feel comfortable if theycome close to them.

Law books are full of laws, hints, prohibiting the games tobe played near their homes, schools, churches, etc.

It wasn’t too long ago peopleof color, females suffered bans.It wasn’t until the 40s PresidentTruman allowed AMF to installa pair of lanes in the WhiteHouse.

That’s ancient stuff — theydon’t do it today?

Baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, soccer stadiums, fields, rinks, get subsidized, bowling doesn’t.

It could be the bowling publicdoesn’t care, lack of politicalpressure.

We do know of a few privatein-home undercover lanes hereand major U.S. cities.

This writer thought since heloved tenpin bowling, he coulduse a few pins and bowling ballsto make a lane — “yard art” — a30-inch wide lane, balls placedabout 5-feet apart and at the end,a pin. Regulation balls and pin.

The principle neighbor didn’tlike the “art”. Complained to ourgracious, worthy (good people)managers and the bottom linethey wrote: ITEMS TO COR-RECT: Remove the bowling ballsand pins located between yourdriveway and the property line.

Now a few art lovers likeTruman thought the lane hadmerit, was arty, want me to putthe balls and pin back up.

What should I do?
