St. Patrick’s of Tekamah:

“…whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” ~ MATTHEW 10:38 ~

Pope Benedict XVI said “The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort, you were made for greatness”. “Comfort” puts me first. “Picking up your cross and following Jesus” puts God and others first. Why settle for comfort when you can achieve greatness! Pick up your cross, ask Jesus for guidance on using your gifts and live the life God intended for you!

Children’s good deed: “I went to bed without complaining; I watered flowers; I pulled weeds in the garden.”

From Fr. Kevin…

In this Sunday’s second reading from the Letter

of Saint Paul to the Romans, St. Paul explains

the Sacrament of Christian Baptism. Through

Baptism one becomes a new creation; so, one is

called to live in newness of life--one must live

for God in Christ Jesus. Through Baptism one

belongs to Jesus: My life is not my own. In this

Sunday’s Gospel of St. Matthew, Jesus explains

the implications of Baptism: One must

reprioritize one’s life in the way of values and

choices. For example, I am to love Jesus more

than I love my family and more than I love

myself. The call to the Kingdom of God is an

urgent summons that requires a total re-ordering

of one’s priorities. There is a need for

renunciation--this is why each of us needs the

cross in our lives. The cross helps me to “die to

my ways, my preferences, my selfish values”,

and begin to experience life through Jesus’

perspective: “Whoever loses his life for my sake

will find it” (Mt. 10:39). May our love of Jesus

always be the motivating force in our lives. Peace, Fr. Kevin

FAITH FACTS Christ Jesus (Romans 6:5)

The Christ (Greek, christos), the messiah or anointed one, identified the agent of salvation (savior) whom God would send to deliver the people and create god’s kingdom on earth. In Israel, the primary anointed figures were the priests and the kings. In the time of Jesus, the development of a messianic hope was anything but clear or well-defined. Many longed for a messiah who would be a great king who would powerfully or supernaturally rescue God’s chosen people from Roman oppression, end suffering and death, and set up a kingdom that would see no end. Peter recognizes Jesus as the Messiah, but then Jesus reveals that he is not a political messiah but one who will save us through his suffering-a picture of a messiah that no one anticipated.

The Lighter Side

Q. Why were the first Americans like ants? A: They lived in colonies.

Q. Why did Paul Revere ride his horse from Boston to Lexington? A. Because the horse was too heavy to carry. Q. What did one flag say to the other flag? A. Nothing. It just waved.

“Some people have forgotten what the 4th of July is really all about. This day commemorates the freedoms we use every day. It’s not fireworks and parties. That’s just what makes it fun. Let’s remember as we fall asleep this Independence Day those who fight and the many that have died to protect our freedom.”
