James Earl Carter Jr.

Born October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia

First president born in a hospital Oldest of four children to James and

Lillian Carter In 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith

and raised four child together

Naval Career

After high school and attending Georgia Southwestern College, he later applied to the United States Naval Academy

Admitted in 1943, he graduated 59th out of 820 midshipmen

During this time, he served on surface ships and on diesel electric submarines in the Atlantic and pacific fleets.

Early Political Career

Became the Senator of Georgia in 1961 and was reelected in 1963.

After losing his first battle in the run for the state Government, he gained respect and eventually won his second election and was named the Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1976.

Took Office: 1976 Left Office: 1980 Party: Democratic Served as the 39th President

During his Presidency

Carter spent much of his time dealing with inflation and recession, along with dealing with an energy crisis during his Presidency run.

He also decided to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics. Making this one of Carter’s most controversial decisions while in the White House.

After his presidency

In 2002, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work “to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development” through the Carter Center.
