Los Dodgers de Brooklyn by Claire Daniel

Build BackgroundHelp children use their knowledge of baseball to visualize the story. Build interest by asking a question such as the following: ¿Sobre qué equipos de béisbol has oído hablar? ¿Qué equipo te gusta más? Read the title and author and talk about the cover photo. Explain that Los Dodgers de Brooklyn were a famous team that played at Ebbets Field, a ball park in Brooklyn, New York.

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and nonfi ction features. Help with unfamiliar language so they can read the text successfully. Give special attention to target vocabulary. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that Brooklyn is part of New York City. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2 de este libro. La leyenda nos dice que esta es una foto de los Dodgers de Brooklyn. ¿En qué se diferencia esta foto de fotos de equipos actuales?

Page 3: Explain that the events in this book are organized by their dates. Vayan a la página 3. La leyenda dice que este es Ebbets Field. Leamos la primera oración: Los Dodgers comenzaron a jugar béisbol en 1890. ¿Qué otra fecha encuentran en esta página? Muy bien: EN 1912, los Dodgers se mudaron a un nuevo parque llamado campo Ebbets.

Page 4: Read the caption. Point out that the Dodgers had many cheering fans who hurried to see them play. Have children fi nd the words apresuraban and aclamaban. ¿Por qué equipo se apresurarían por ver?

Pages 5-6: Point out that captions can give clues about information in the text. ¿Qué les dicen las leyendas de estas páginas?

Page 7: ¿Qué les dice esta leyenda? ¿Alguna vez han tenido que quedarse en una posición por mucho tiempo? ¿Por qué?

Pages 8-9: Lean las leyendas. ¿Sobre qué creen que tratarán las páginas fi nales del libro?

Ahora, vuelvan al comienzo del libro y lean para descubrir por qué los Dodgers de Brooklyn eran tan famosos.

ReadAs the children read Los Dodgers de Brooklyn, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem-solving ability.

Remind children to use the Visualize Strategy and to picture what is happening as they read.

Discuss and Revisit the TextPersonal ResponseInvite children to share their personal responses to the text. Suggested language: ¿Qué información hallaron más interesante? ¿Qué más les gustaría saber sobre los Dodgers de Brooklyn?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, help children understand these points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Los Dodgers de Brooklyn were an old, famous team.

• Jackie Robinson was one of their best players.

• The Dodgers are now in Los Angeles.

• Baseball fans have always cheered their favorite teams.

• Baseball teams change over time.

• Captions help to explain the photos.

• The photos contain a lot of visual information.

• The last color photo contrasts with the others.

Choices for Further Support• Fluency Invite children to choose a passage from the text to read aloud. Suggest that

they try reading a couple of pages as if they were narrating a movie about the Dodgers de Brooklyn

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the children’s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas.

• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children that to form the past tense of verbs we add –aba and –aban. Provide examples from the text, such as llenaba (p. 3), apresuraban (p. 4), jugaba (p. 6) and esperaban (p. 7), Have children fi nd other examples in the selection.

Writing about ReadingVocabulary PracticeHave children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible 17.1.

RespondingHave children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11. Remind them to answer the Word Teaser on p. 12. (Answer: practicar)

Reading Nonfi ctionNonfiction Features: Captions and Photos Remind children that nonfi ction has many features to help readers fi nd and understand important information. Captions and photos are two of these features. Explain that captions can be short phrases, as in this book, or longer sentences. Captions tell what a photo or map or diagram is about. Reading the captions in a nonfi ction book is a good way to preview the book before reading the main text.

Photos are another important source of information. They often add information that is not in the text. Have children look again at the photo on page 7. Ask what information they can learn from the photo (the price of tickets, the clothes people wore). Then have children choose a photo in the book and write a longer caption for the photograph, based on what they see in the picture.

Writing Prompt: Thinking Beyond the TextHave children write a response to the prompt on page 6.

Assessment Prompts• Which words on page 9 help the reader understand the meaning of adicional?

• What does the word gritaban mean in this sentence?

Nueva York hace mucho tiempo.

Los Dodgers comenzaron a jugar béisbol en 1890.

Cuando ellos jugaban en casa, el parque de béisbol se llenaba.

Muy pronto, el equipo necesitó más espacio para sus

aficionados.

En el año 1912, los Dodgers se mudaron a un nuevo parque

llamado Ebbets Field.

Cada vez más aficionados se apresuraban para llegar a Ebbets

Field a ver jugar a los Dodgers.
