ISU Current Situation
Pork industry has changed dramatically – need for
more education and human capital
From 2001 to 2006, twelve 4-year ag schools in 11
states dropped swine education from their
curriculum
Fall 2010 – Sum. 2011 --- 17 of 33 had < 25
students enrolled (6 canceled for low enrollment)
At several universities, swine science is only taught
every other year
Some universities now teach swine science as part
of a general livestock course
Fewer opportunities for students

First ever online undergraduate program in swine
Funded by USDA Higher Education Challenge
Grant: $460K in a matching grant to USPCE
Vision
• Ensure that the pork industry of the future is led and
managed by individuals who have broad educational
and production experiences which have prepared them
for these roles.

of pork industry professionals.

Target Audience
• Students working toward a 4-year degree
• Individuals currently working in the pork industry
Who should enroll?
• Individuals seeking to be managers of units
• Individuals seeking employment in allied industry
• Future leaders in the pork industry
Goal – teach students problem-solving and
analytical skills that will be needed to be
successful in the pork industry
ISU Program Structure
Basic Swine Science – 2 credits
All other courses are 1 credit
1-credit courses will contain 15 learning
modules
Courses delivered over a 12-week period via
distance education
Lab courses are 1-week courses on-site
Courses will be offered Fall, Spring, Summer
Schedule will be dependent on level of
participation

ISU Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Swine Science Online program, students will be able to:
• Integrate disciplines and concepts in order to facilitate problem solving, creating a more efficient and sustainable production system
• Combine scientific principles and management skills involved in pork production
• Recognize available career opportunities within the pork industry
• Apply personnel, facility, fiscal, and livestock management
• Understand the impact of societal and industry issues on production management systems
• Explain the pork structure and trends, including production, packing, and integration
