Thank you to all of the parents who spent time and effort putting together costumes for the day. Our book fair also proved to be really popular. We have raised £1667.22 at our it, which not only means our children have added wonderful new books to their collection at home, but also that – as a result – the book fair company have given the school £940.20 to spend on books for the school! This would not have happened without the support of our parents, so thank you. I would also like to inform you about an exciting new project we are getting involved in with the England Cricket Board. Mums are invited to be trained as cricket coaches – you’ll receive a full kit, training (not only cricket but also other skills too), a DBS check, a reference from the England Cricket Board and more. Mums who have been trained will then run cricket clubs for our girls this summer term. Want to find out more? Come along to our taster session at 3:30pm on Tuesday 17 th March. Message from the Head Teacher

World Book Day was a huge success: we had a wonderful day delving into new worlds through

exciting, enchanting and adventurous texts. Thank you to all of the parents who spent time and effort

putting together costumes for the day. Our book fair also proved to be really popular. We have raised

£1667.22 at our it, which not only means our children have added wonderful new books to their

collection at home, but also that – as a result – the book fair company have given the school £940.20

to spend on books for the school! This would not have happened without the support of our parents,

so thank you.

I would also like to inform you about an exciting new project we are getting involved in with the

England Cricket Board. Mums are invited to be trained as cricket coaches – you’ll receive a full kit,

training (not only cricket but also other skills too), a DBS check, a reference from the England Cricket

Board and more. Mums who have been trained will then run cricket clubs for our girls this summer

term. Want to find out more? Come along to our taster session at 3:30pm on Tuesday 17th March.

More information will also be sent out soon.

Coronavirus is continuing to dominate the news. I’d like to reassure all parents that we are following the advice of Public Health England and will keep you updated if there is any news that will impact you or your child. Best wishes, Miss Prince

What’s been happening at Leigh?

Nursery

Reception

Year 1

Year 2

Year 3

The Reception children have really enjoyed reading the traditional tale ‘Jack and

the Beanstalk’ in their classes this half term. They have even been growing their

own beanstalks!

For writing, Year 2's focus text this half term has been 'The Flower' by John Light. The children have read the story and written it by splitting it into the beginning, middle and ending. In Maths, Year 2 are looking at statistics and data collecting. They have been introduced to tally charts, pictograms and bar charts. For Science. Year 2 have been looking at plants and flowers. They have planted their own sunflowers and bulbs and it is very exciting to watch them grow. For Cornerstones the children made their own models of a lighthouse as they have been learning about Grace Darling who lived in one.

Nursery children have been focusing on the story of the ‘Three Little Pigs’. They have been imaginative in the role play area and are beginning to join in with phrases from the book. We looked at different buildings from around the world, how they are made and how they stay up and have compared them to our own homes. This led to lots of children talking about what building they live in, where and who lives with them. We also had a special visit from two parakeets: we looked at their home and made bird houses in Forest School.

On World Book Day the children had lots of fun dressing up and being

creative. The children read the book called ‘Wild’ and then created lots of

pieces of artwork. We used various art techniques such as oil pastels,

collages, drawing and painting.

In English, we are teaching the children how to write using figurative language in

order to interest the reader. We have been reading different fairy tales to

compare the events that occur.

In Maths, the children have been learning how to measure using different units of

measurements.

We would love to see any of the children’s ‘scrumdiddlyumptious’ projects so

please encourage your child to be as creative as they wish!

SCHOOL LIBRARY SESSIONS

World Book Day Pictures

Year 5 have been travelling back in time to Ancient Egypt! This term, they have been learning all about the pharaohs, the pyramids, mummification and the River Nile. As you can see, they have also been inspired to design their own Egyptian style necklaces, adorned with scarab beetles and bright patterns. They are also carrying out an experiment: mummifying tomatoes! Keep an eye on the school Twitter page to keep updated on their progress. A special well done to those children in Year 5 who have been completing their home challenges. We have been really amazed by the hard work and effort that a lot of our children are putting into their homework, so keep it up!

All the children in Year 6 are working hard in their English and Maths lessons to get ready for their next set of Mock SATs test. Wellbeing and yoga sessions are also taking place which provide children an opportunity to relax and learn strategies to look after their mental health. On World Book Day all the pupils dressed up as their favourite book character. By using their art skills, all the children designed and produced a book cover for the class reading book ‘Skellig’.

Year 4 have had a very busy couple of weeks! In English, the children looked at all the different features of Quest stories and have started to write their own! In Maths, the children have been developing their understanding of multiplication and division. Furthermore, in science the children have started to learn all about the water cycle and will continue to develop their scientific knowledge of the water cycle over the coming weeks as part of their topic ‘States of Matter’. Last week, the children had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day. Children came dressed up in their favourite book characters and took part in various fun activities on the day.

Thank you to all staff and children who dressed up for World Book Day! Everyone looked absolutely amazing! Please have a look at some of the photos taken of staff and students below:
