ISSUE 48 DECEMBER/JANUARY 2014

As we are preparing for the holiday season, we had the great sadness to lose one of our own. Dr. Mary Lou Ellins left us at the age of 61 after a courageous seven month fight against one of the most devastating forms of cancer. She lost the battle on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013. Dr. Ellins leaves behind her husband Don and three sons, Adam, David and Matthew. An informal get-together was held in October in honour of Dr. Ellins. She seemed in good spirits and impressed all of us by her courage and dignity. A passionate radiologist, and a leader in neuroradiology and cardiac imaging, Dr. Ellins was our site chief at the Hamilton General Hospital. She was always ready to fight for her department, her staff and the radiologists. But more importantly, she was an exceptional role model showing dedication to our patients, going above and beyond, day or night, to provide the best quality of care. Dr. Ellins received her Bachelor Degree in Microbiology and Master’s Degree in Microbiology and Virology from the University of Toronto. She received her Medical Degree from McMaster University, followed by a residency in surgery and then radiology, also at McMaster University. Dr. Ellins was a staff member at the General site since 1994. Mary Lou will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

AMALGAMATION - HHS and WLMH

M E D I C A L I M A G I N G B U L L E T I N

“Beginning a new future, together”

On June 25th Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) and West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) announced an

amalgamation plan that will further strengthen the continuum of care to ensure that all patients receive the right

care, in the right place. Coming together will create a combined system that builds on the strengths of both

organizations. For staff, amalgamation will provide a broader range of career opportunities as well as a single

organizational structure that encourages and supports collaboration and innovation.

In order to accomplish the process of integration, several Functional Integration Teams (FITs) have been created.

These teams will utilize a facilitated framework to work through the details of integrating the operations at WLMH

and HHS. The DI Functional Integration Team (FIT) will be co-led by Dr. David Koff, Vikki Metler, Dr. John Rawlinson

and myself. Subsequently, a kick off meeting was held on November 18th with management, technical and clerical

representation from both WLMH and HHS. To that end, the following objectives will be used to guide our team

members in the work to integrate Diagnostic Services clinical, administrative and support services, and medical

staff.

Maintain and improve the quality, access and comprehensiveness of care

Improve and sustain access to services offered by WLMH and HHS

Improve the efficiency of service delivery

Allow for fulfillment of a strategic vision

Improve research/education and opportunities for innovation

Optimize overhead costs to further invest in clinical programs

It is expected that the work of our team will proceed over the next several months. As such, our intent is to

communicate and provide you with monthly updates on our progress.

MEDIA RELEASE - D. Wormald

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release

November 26, 2013

Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and London Health Sciences

Centre to issue RFQ for Managed Equipment Services Partnership

(HAMILTON & LONDON, Ontario) Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and London Health Sciences Centre are announcing today that a Request for Qualifications for a Managed Equipment Services (MES) Partnership is to be issued on December 3, 2013. Diagnostic Services and Medical Diagnostic Unit departments at the hospitals are implementing a novel and leading best practice to support their medical and molecular imaging clinical, academic and research programs by seeking a partner to implement a MES. The hospitals believe that this MES partnership will be an exemplar of their shared project vision “Living Healthcare –Transformation & Innovation Supported by Progressive Technology and Leading Research” in the following ways: 1. Demonstrate organizational and program commitment to the patient experience. The MES will ensure that our equipment is maintained and meets/exceeds industry and legislative safety standards e.g. radiation protection and dose. From a quality and safety experience, our patients (adult and pediatric) and families will have confidence that they have received the highest quality of diagnostic care/treatment and service by compassionate staff utilizing reliable/safe medical imaging equipment; 2. Enable the use of data to inform our management practices and evidence-based decision-making as it relates to medical equipment maintenance, equipment replacement, decommissioning, and utilization as well as radiation dose management practices; 3. Support the notion of Seamless Healthcare in so much as it is aligned with a strategic industry partner that supports the hospitals’ ability to achieve service delivery processes that ensure patient imaging examinations are efficiently stored and made available in real time to referring physicians and other authorized community users; 4. Facilitate operational excellence, effective asset management, annual financial savings, fiscal stewardship, transparency and accountability resulting in both direct monetary savings and indirect value to the hospitals over the term of the agreement; 5. Draw upon the partner’s core competencies, innovation and global reach to support and provide Diagnostic Imaging staff (management, physicians, technologists, nurses, clerical/support staff) with leading best practices and knowledge transfer in support of the hospitals’ academic and research evolutions; and 6. Incorporate unique features that will further enhance academic and research initiatives which in turn will enable the hospitals to focus on the delivery of transformational patient care and pioneering research instead of the administration of equipment procurement. The Request for Qualifications is the first step in the procurement process to select a partner for this project. The RFQ will be posted on Biddingo on December 3, 2013. The hospitals will hold an RFQ market briefing and question and answer session on December 10, 2013, in Toronto at 10 am. Further details regarding the market briefing will be provided in the RFQ.

MIIRC@M’s vision is to foster seamless integration of medical images in the daily world of healthcare professionals with appropriate delivery of relevant content and decision support and educate the new world of imaging/EHR professionals. To learn more about the work and research projects that MIIRC@M is involved in, please visit www.miircam.ca or email Jane Castelli at [email protected].

Did you know an innovative, exciting initiative at McMaster exists bringing Medical Imaging together with a range of disciplines such as Medicine, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, e-Health, Nuclear Medicine, Statistics, and Psychology?

The Medical Imaging Informatics Research Centre at McMaster University (MIIRC@M) is the result of efforts of the radiologists at Hamilton Health Sciences, and the researchers and scientists at McMaster University and the University of Waterloo, along with other prestigious Canadian and International universities.

PROTOCOL STANDARDIZATION - HHS & St. Joe’s

HHS and SJHH have teamed up to improve Diagnostic Imaging quality by standardizing CT adult and pediatric imaging protocols across all sites at HHS and SJHH. This is an exciting undertaking as membership on this committee is from all sites. Members have come together to review protocols, identify differences and leverage their expertise to make recommendations for change to improve patient care. It is also an opportunity to network with other staff members and physicians and open the channels of communication. The panel consists of Radiologists, CT Technologists, Managers and a Medical Physicist. One of the key hallmarks of this project is to review radiation dose for the more common exams across all sites and promote best practice. Phase 1 consists of CT protocol standardization and phase 2 will consist of a review of all MRI protocols across all sites. The Sponsor for this CT and MRI Protocol Standardization Committee is Dr. Julian Dobranowski. It is chaired by Dr. Mehran Midia as the Physician Co-Chair and myself, Shairoz Kherani, as the Administrative Co-Chair.

The committee had its inaugural meeting in October 2013 and has already made recommendations regarding CT radiation dose for the head. We hope to continue the momentum and welcome comments and feedback from our readers.
