Dear Parents and Carers,

We are approaching the mid-point to the Term already and our thoughts turn to assessments. In preparation for this I urge students and parents to take the time to have a look through their new diaries. This year the College has engaged the Learning Curve company to print our diaries and these are full of positive messages our student s can use throughout the year.

On page 6 our School Expectations are listed:

Be an active learner. To do this I urge students to be “coachable”. That is, enter the classroom ready to learn. They should be prompt and have their equipment needed. Just as athletes train to perform, we can all be ready to perform if we have the right mindset.

Be responsible. The dictionary defines this as, “Adjective. Having an obligation to do something, or having control over or care for someone, as part of one's job or role”. I like the idea that I am responsible for my choices and outcomes. You make choices and your choices make you.

Be respectful. Our students are generally very respectful and I thank all families for helping us to encourage students to be respectful. To speak nicely toward each other, staff and others.

Be safe: Our key priority is that students are safe at school. We provide a safe environment and need our students to take positive safe actions at all times.

The diaries also have a term by term goal setting section on page 11 where students can record their learning goals. Research shows that people who write down their goals are 33% more likely to succeed.

There is a wealth of information and activities that students can use toward their wellbeing and we will help students work through these diaries each week in their SEL (Social Emotional Learning) lesson on a Friday. We want our students to be healthy, happy, safe and grow as learners.

Returning to my introduction, the junior diary (page 137) and the senior diary (page 140) have a range of practical ideas and information about helping students study.

This is a valuable resource to help our students and I am glad our young people have access to this as part of their text and resource hire scheme.

Tuckshop Volunteers for 2020 are desperately needed!

If you can assist 1 day per week, 1 day per month or even 1 day per Term

please contact the school office. Your assistance will certainly be appreciated.

If we do not get more volunteers for 2020 our Tuckshop opening hours will be

forced to reduce to 3 days per week.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisation Day

Thursday 19th March

Our school is participating in Queensland Health’s Annual School Immunisation Program. All Year 7 and Year 10 students will be offered free vaccinations as recommended on the National Immunisation Program schedule, as shown in the table below.

Vaccines offered in the Queensland School Immunisation Program

School Year Vaccine Dose and administration

Year 7 Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

Two doses of GARDASIL®9 will be offered, providing

protection against 9 types of HPV. The two doses should

Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine

One booster dose will be offered.

Year 10 Meningococcal ACWY vaccine One dose will be offered.

Forms for completion where sent home with students at the beginning of last week. Please ensure that this form is returned to the school office as soon as possible so that they can be handed to Queensland Health to prepare for Immunisation Day.

Even if you choose not to have your student immunised we ask that the form be completed with the appropriate tick to indicate that they will not be participating and return this to the school.

Please don’t hesitate to check with the school or more importantly with Angela Slack from Community Health if you have any issues you need to discuss regarding immunisations.

Mission Statement Our mission at Burnett State College is to provide all students with a quality education and opportunities to experience success within a positive learning environment where students are active learners who are responsible, respectful and safe.

In 2020, to further support our Mission Statement, we have implemented the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework which promotes positive behaviour across a school and helps schools to develop a safe and supportive learning environment.

In a whole-school approach, all members of the school community work together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour.

Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

When schools adopt the PBL framework all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours and clear and consistent boundaries are established. Schools take a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school. Student outcomes are monitored so that identified students can receive additional support when needed, and a minority of students can access intensive support to enable them to engage successfully at school.

T.A.R.S.

(TEACHER ACKNOWLEDGEMENT REWARDS SYSTEM)

To support students in our new PBL program, the TARS reward system is being introduced. This is particularly exciting as in 2019, students were surveyed and it is primarily their responses that make up the new rewards that BSC is using this year. The following slides were used to introduce the whole school to the TARS program.

PURPOSE

To acknowledge existing, positive patterns of behaviour

To encourage all students to make positive behaviour choices and so meet school expectations

To develop students who are self-regulating and thus a valued member of the BSC community

EXPLANATION

TARS:

Teacher Acknowledgement Reward System “Loyalty Card” style

Students to store in plastic pocket of diary

Developed from 2019 student feedback—wanted certainty of a prize

Students are only to operate one TARS card at a time

Incremental points system

Week 3 launch

Stamps with staff names to come - staff will sign for the time being

NOTE:

The term “teacher” applies to ALL staff at BSC

Rewards can be earned both in and out of the classroom

HOW DO I EARN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Actions in class that show an individual meets school expectations on a regular, frequent and consistent basis. Their actions add to the productivity and beneficial dynamics of the class as a whole. This can include displaying consistently positive/productive efforts in relation to interpersonal interactions, class work, homework and/or assignments

Changes in student behaviour of a positive nature, especially if it is adding to the individual’s progress and focus; it may also be reflected in an improvement in the productivity and dynamics of the class as a whole

By displaying attitude and actions out of class (this can be grounds, excursions, events etc. ) that are positive, raise the tone of the school and/or improve the public profile of the individual, group or whole school

HOW DO I REDEEM PRIZES?

Redeem prizes every Tuesday at 1.10pm in TAFE with Mr Kemp

25 stamps (or signatures) = minor prize eg. Stationery/Super Dooper

100 stamps (or signatures) = participation in end of term activity (pizza/pool party)

A major prize, once obtained cannot be removed. Guaranteed participation in the end of term event

After 100 is reached, the completed card will be collected and student noted

Student then collects another card and begins working towards next term’s major prize

BYO Laptop Scheme and Windows S Mode

As we have many students joining the BYO Laptop scheme for the first

time this year, I would like to share some information that will make

connecting your student’s laptop to the school network as easy as

possible.

Many manufacturers and retailers are increasingly selling Windows 10

S Mode devices. S Mode is a limited version of Windows 10 that will only run certain software.

Connecting to the school network at BSC requires a full version of Windows, meaning devices in

S Mode are not compatible.

The good news is that upgrading your device out of S Mode and into a full version of Windows is

quick and free! I have included links below to a YouTube video and a written article, both

detailing instructions on how to stop your Windows 10 PC from running in S Mode.

Be aware that unlocking S Mode cannot be done at school, due to Education Queensland filters

on the school’s internet. This is a statewide filter and beyond the school’s control.

I highly encourage you to check if your student’s device is in S Mode and, if so, unlock the

device to full Windows 10 using either of the links below. If your student requires any support in

unlocking your device from S Mode, please have them see me during a lunch break.

HOD Mathematics / Science / Information Technology

Maths and Science Tutoring

Maths and Science tutorials commenced last week and will continue again each Tuesday and

Wednesday afternoons. These sessions run from 3:05 to 4.00pm each week to provide assistance

for students in all Maths and Science subjects from Years 7 to 12. The sessions are entirely optional

and students can attend as many or as few as they wish. Many students found these sessions useful

last year, especially in the lead up to assignments and exams. Other students found it a useful time

to get more focused assistance from their teachers or simply as a time to quietly do their homework.

All students are welcome and can come and see me if they have any further questions.

Mr Stephen Adams

Science Coordinator
