Welcome to week 5. We have certainly seen an exciting start to the year at Burnett State College.

BYO and eLearn News

Since my arrival at BSC 2 years ago, I have been engaging with students, staff and the community as our school transitions to the BYO Laptop scheme. To enhance the BYO program, BSC has also spent the last 24 months developing staff capacity in the use of online education to give students 24/7 access to learning materials. It is great to see the BYO program being taken up by the community, with well over 100 students now participating. If you ever have any concerns or questions, regarding the scheme, please don’t hesitate to contact me via phone or email.

NAPLAN Online

Later this Term I will be attending a conference on the implementation of NAPLAN Online. The Department is committed to moving NAPLAN to the online environment and BSC successfully made this transition last year. We will be involving our current Year 7 and 9 students in practice activities over the coming months, to familiarise them with NAPLAN Online.

GRIP Leadership

Our student leaders attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Toowoomba this week. This was an excellent opportunity for them to develop their leadership capabilities, as the school body looks to them for guidance in 2020. Thanks to Mrs Leaf for providing this great experience to our student leaders.

Assessment Time

Finally, as we head into the second half of the Term, the assessment schedule for our students is going to pick up. Effective time management and a regular study schedule over the coming weeks will be vital in reducing stress and obtaining the best grades possible for our students.

Tuckshop Volunteers for 2020 are desperately needed!

If you can assist 1 day per week, 1 day per month or even 1 day per Term

please contact the school office. Your assistance will certainly be appreciated.

If we do not get more volunteers for 2020 our Tuckshop opening hours will be

forced to reduce to 3 days per week.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisation Day

Thursday 19th March

Our school is participating in Queensland Health’s Annual School Immunisation Program. All Year 7 and Year 10 students will be offered free vaccinations as recommended on the National Immunisation Program schedule, as shown in the table below.

Vaccines offered in the Queensland School Immunisation Program

School Year Vaccine Dose and administration

Year 7 Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

Two doses of GARDASIL®9 will be offered, providing

protection against 9 types of HPV. The two doses should be given at least 6 months apart.

Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine

One booster dose will be offered.

Year 10 Meningococcal ACWY vaccine One dose will be offered.

Forms for completion where sent home with students at the beginning of last week. Please ensure that this form is returned to the school office as soon as possible so that they can be handed to Queensland Health to prepare for Immunisation Day.

Even if you choose not to have your student immunised we ask that the form be completed with the appropriate tick to indicate that they will not be participating and return this to the school.

Please don’t hesitate to check with the school or more importantly with Angela Slack from Community Health if you have any issues you need to discuss regarding immunisations.

News from the

BSC English Department are very excited to welcome two new teaching staff members for 2020. Both Miss Millie Chapman and Miss Endayha Rohayem are new graduates from the University of Sunshine Coast. Miss Chapman is currently teaching Year 9 and 10 English whilst Miss Rohayem is teaching both classes of Year 7 and Year 8 English. We welcome both to our English BSC family. Below is a little description on what is happening this Term in English:

Subject: 7 English

Teachers: Miss Rohayem

Unit this term: Life Writing

In this unit, students have been developing their understanding of narrative structures and language features through genre of life writing. Students have been viewing a range of biographies, autobiographies and recounts. This is to develop and deepen their understanding of how differing narrative structures can be applied to their own lives. In the concluding phases of this unit, students will be creating their own recount based on a significant life event.

Subject: 8 English

Teachers: Miss Rohayem

Unit this term: Representations of teens in a novel

Throughout Term 1, students have been exploring teen issues in Australia and representations of teens within texts. Their novel of study is Don’t Call me Ishmael! which delves into the life of a teen and the series of events which shape his high school experience. Students will demonstrate their understanding of relevant teen issues by creating a series of narrative journal entries addressing and resolving their issue of choice.

Subject: 9 English

Teachers: Miss Chapman and Miss Geddes

Unit this term: The Poetry of War

In this unit students will be viewing a range of texts including documentaries, the film, “Gallipoli” as well as a range of poetry all centred around World War I. Through this exploration, we hope to explore the emotion as well as develop a deeper understanding of the impact of war on those who served as well as those who remained at home.

Students are required to write a “letter home” from the perspective of a soldier or nurse to a friend or family member in Australia during WW1. As well as the obvious literary skills required, this unit is also a way for our students to develop both their understanding of, and empathy for, others in different times and places.

Assessment Due: Letter Home is due 24th March 2020.

Teachers: Mr Bahnisch and Miss Chapman

Unit this term: Novel Study – “Tomorrow When the War Began”

In this unit, students are using the Australian novel, Tomorrow When the War Began, to explore the way in which authors use language, characters and events to position their readers to think, feel, or react in a certain way. Students will enjoy a skilfully written contemporary novel while developing their understanding of the abstract concept of positioning. This form of critical thinking is a highly useful skill, both in and outside of the English classroom. Through it, students will be able to ‘see through’ other attempts at author positioning, such as persuasive texts and advertisements. The assessment for this task is an analytical essay. Students will use notes they are currently compiling to examine the way in which John Marsden (the novel’s author) has positioned the reader positively and negatively throughout the novel.

Unit this term: Texts and Perspectives

Semester One of General English begins with a study of Texts And Perspectives. During this semester, we will examine the different types of media influence and focus on the way social media constructs are formed and positioned. The initial task for this new course of study will be a persuasive presentation that examines a current social issue and its ramifications on contemporary society.

Subject: 11 Essential English

Teacher: Mr Bahnisch

Unit this term: Language that works

In this unit, students are viewing a broad variety of print and film texts associated with the workplace. Through these, students will consider how effective workplace communication is conducted. Moreover, students will use these texts to identify and explain common workplace issues, showing their understanding of the impacts of these issues. Students will also develop their written and spoken communication for both the workplace and their day-to-day lives. The assessment for this Term is a persuasive speech. Students will identify a common workplace issue of their choice, and present a point of view on this issue. Rather than presenting these live, students will have an opportunity to practise their digital skills through recording, editing and publishing their presentations. Assessment Due: Recorded Persuasive Speech (3-5 minutes) is due 26-03-20.

Subject: 12 General English

Teacher: Mrs Leaf

In Year 12 General English, we are studying the features and history of Gothic literature. Throughout this term, students will examine both a contemporary Gothic novel and a film, to determine the essential workings of what is now known as ‘the Gothic’.

The unit will culminate in the delivery of a multi – modal literary essay that discusses in depth a relevant concept.

Subject: 12 Essential English

Teacher: Miss Geddes and Mr Bahnisch Unit this Term: Language that Influences In this unit, students are experiencing a variety of different texts relating to the representation of global and local issues. They are learning to apply different language features and text structures appropriate for a specific role or purpose, as well as using spoken presentation techniques. Students are also developing their knowledge of different techniques which are used for persuading an audience to a point of view. The assessment for this Term is a persuasive speech. Students will take the role of a youth development officer in the North Burnett who is seeking to persuade local senior students to take action in addressing an identified ‘local issue’. Students will utilise their oral presentation skills, as well as their skills in recording, editing and publishing a presentation. This skillset will aid them both in school and in their future endeavours. Assessment Due: Persuasive Speech Recording (4-6 minutes) is due 5-03-20.

College Swimming

Carnival

This year’s “Ocean” themed swimming

carnival was a blast!

The carnival saw the students putting in

their best efforts and the participation

swims from each house saw parents,

students and teachers gaining more points for their teams. A huge congratulations to all

competitors throughout the day, for putting in their mighty efforts and swimming their hardest.

But at the end of all the hard efforts there had to be one winner. Allindara came on top as the

winners of the day, with Tarumbal coming in at second and Wandarang coming in at third.

A huge thank you to all who helped in the running of the day, including the staff and students

being there early for set up, staff time keeping every race, students cheering on their fellow

team members and student helpers throughout the day. This all plays a vital role in the

running of the day and we are very grateful.

Lunch time saw an intense challenge race between Mr Eskdale, Blake Bechley, Tayleigh Fry,

Sophie Zipf and Mrs Lisa Baker, who took the challenge and competed to prove who the

fastest swimmer was. The 50m freestyle race was close between all competitors, but Blake

came out on top and stole the win with a quick time of 26.9 seconds.

The following students were awarded age champions on the day, with many of them claiming

maximum points for their house.

A massive thank you to all of those who participated in some way to make the 2020 Burnett

State College swimming carnival a huge success. A very special thank you to Ben and Amy

Golchert for providing a terrific venue in excellent condition for all of our students and

patrons on the day, as well as running the canteen non-stop throughout our time at the pool

keeping everyone well fed and hydrated.

We look forward to our other carnivals throughout the year and hope to get the same level of

participation if not more. Don’t forget to keep an ear out for our next exciting theme!
