Hello there, A significant part of our school community will be celebrating this weekend. (No it’s not our teachers going on holiday!) Eid is one of the most important Muslim celebrations of the year. The festival marks the end of Ramadan and signals the start of Shawwal, the ninth month in the Muslim calendar. Our best wishes are with all in our community who are observing this important festival. Mr Don

Physical Education News
The Nadi Tag Rugby competition is currently underway with a number of schools around Nadi including our school participating in the competitions. This is a great opportunity for our students to show their rugby skills as well interacting and creating new friendship with students from other schools. After the 6 weeks competitions we hope to have some of our promising young ISN ruggers represent Nadi District in the Crest Chicken Tag Ruby Competitions in August.
Swim lessons help develop essential social skills in a fun and non-traditional way. They also contribute
to increased confidence and participation in group activities to a healthy respect and appreciation for
the water. The secondary swimming lessons this term have given students an opportunity to learn and
improve on individual swimming skills. We also had the opportunity to learn and play ‘water polo’,
learn the importance of water safety, practice survival swimming and water rescue.

French News for PYP to DP This Semester Uff….! What a busy semester! It seems like yesterday the students were introduced to inquiry questions for Term 1
and Term 2 units, and here we are today, having already finished with our Semester One exams, review of mistakes
and corrections.
This has been the first semester ever for Year 5 to have French as a subject in their PYP curriculum. Year 5 students
learned the French alphabet, rules of reading and pronunciation. They can introduce themselves by speaking about
their name, age, place of residence, birthday, family, likes and dislikes. In the unit ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’
the students memorized new vocabulary for certain places in town and are confident in using it in the structure ‘I go
to’. In the unit ‘How We Organize Ourselves’ the students discovered new words how to say meals of the day and
certain food in French; the song ‘Bon appétit, tout le monde!’ was fun to learn!

Hi! We are Zion and Eden Waqainabete. We love swimming! We have been competing in swimming competitions for over two years. This year we both have been selected to represent Fiji in the Pan Pacific Games in Adelaide, Australia. What an honour, we are so excited!
If we are going to be able to go we will have to fundraise! Can you support us by buying or donating a lovo pack? If you do not like lovo or will be out of the country on July 8th but would still like to support us we will be taking any donated lovo packs to a local charity.
Please tick one or more of the boxes below and return to Ms. Kati by the end of the term. Or email her on [email protected]

Year 6 have expanded their vocabulary in the unit ‘How We Organize Ourselves’ having learned more about how to
describe people. Listening activities and lesson discussions helped to stabilize expressions. Year 6 students are
confident in describing people’s appearance, and very much enjoyed the task when they were asked to describe the
physical appearance and a character of a person for the rest of the class to guess who that person was. Year 6
students demonstrated great thinking skills by participating in tasks on ‘Environment’ topic, and shone their talents
through role play on the topic ‘Professions’ and putting the words of the poem ‘La Famille Fantôme’ into different
music styles.
Year 7 students started the semester with the topic ‘You and I’ and concluded it with the theme ‘My Family’.
Though the vocabulary, appropriate articles and related pronouns were easy to remember, the presentation of a
family tree was rather a challenging task. The beginners of MYP have acquired a wide range of first group regular
verbs, practised the rules of conjugation through text-handling exercises and communication, and also managed to
memorize the most usable irregular verbs. Even with the limited vocabulary, Year 7s like to discuss things and to
express their opinion in French. Sometimes discussion might go at a slow pace but with good sounds for sure!
Combined class of Year 8 and 9 students has mastered the techniques of giving instructions. The sentences in
imperative mood reflected advice on what we should do to save our planet in Term 1 and shifted to giving directions
in town in Term 2. With the topic ‘In Town’ the rules how to use structures of prepositions and articles with places
and rules how to conjugate irregular verb ‘aller’ were also introduced. By learning the nouns in combinations with
articles, Year 8 and 9 students seem to grasp the idea how the gender for some nouns can be guessed. What a
discovery!
Year 10’s have practised new phrases in the topics ‘My house’ and ‘My life’ with the latter ranging from school
subjects and daily routine to hobbies in our everyday life. The students were managing to apply several grammatical
rules simultaneously in their communication in speaking and writing. Negative sentences, question structures, time
phrases, regular verb conjugation and irregular verbs seemed to create an area of difficulties for delivering the
contents of the topics. Nevertheless, there is a place for achievements for French Year 10 this semester – some
talents in writing essays have been spotted. The girls in class were always the first to solve crosswords or put the
jumbled sentences in order but the boys never gave up holding steady positions in guessing new words in unfamiliar
texts.
It has been a joy to teach Year 11 this semester. Term 1 was started with expanding the general information to
present ourselves in new structures, and Term 2 witnessed bright multicultural stories on the topic ‘Celebrations’.
Students were speaking about different holiday customs and traditions of various nations, and even managed to
compare celebrations in several countries during Communication Test. Kevin was very excited to learn the
phylosophical approach towards birthdays celebrations, as this subtopic was learned exactly on the day when he
turned 16, thus, the whole class was creating sentences about Kevin. There is much more work to come for Year 11 –
we are currently getting ready for the next busy term in which MOCKs and eAssessments will take place.
Year 12 French students have experienced new tasks from IB DP Programme. All the girls were real risk-takers by
approaching the unfamiliar tasks steadily and with certainty. At the end of last term, ab initio and Language B
students had a chance to do their Community Service for their Subject CAS at a local school; the girls taught basic
vocabulary and structures in French in Meigunyah Muslim Primary School. The girls were confident in delivering the
information on numbers, colours, animals and simple phrases, and felt very positive in a teaching role. In Term 2
speaking techniques were tackled to coap with Interactive and Individual Orals, and whole systems of vocabulary
and grammar were learned to be able to demonstrate successful writing. Ab initio students have participated in
interesting discussions on the topic ‘Relationships’, and have expressed valuable opinions on the problem of healthy
eating in Term 2 unit ‘Food’. Language B students have tried their best in presenting group tasks during Interactive
Orals based on core ‘Communications and Media’. The exams have revealed another side of reading comprehension
tasks; translation is not as easy as it seems, there is much more to these text-handling exercises!
All MYP French students also undertook challenges in Service Learning in Semester One for developing new skills in
the target language. Year 7-11 French students were giving lessons to Years 5 and 6 on a variety of topics. Year 7
demonstrated how to form possessive case, Year 8 and 9 were performing a role play on the topic ‘Environment’,
Year 10 shared expressions about school subjects, and Year 11 introduced sentence structures on how to describe
appearances and speak about family members. Primary students were engaged and were rushing to raise hands for
responding the questions. MYP students have become more aware of their strengths and areas for growth.
All French students showed great commitment in decorating the French stall at Languages Day. Our active Year 7’s
French chef, mime and musketeers, Year 8,9 and 10 ‘s ability to draw and design posters, Year 11’s guides and Year
12’s catherinettes made our booth successful!
Chers étudiants français, vous êtes félicités pour ce semestre !

Silver Anniversary Ball
Thank you PTA The school has just received the generous donation of a rechargeable Bluetooth
connected portable sound system from the PTA. This will greatly improve our
communication with small and large groups as well as our Music programme. We
thank the PTA for sourcing and donating this to the school.
Where’s HPM? No relax, he hasn’t disappeared again, but he is away on holiday! He will be posting to the school’s facebook page regularly so make sure you keep checking the ISN facebook page to see if you can work out where he is.
Can You Help? The school has entered an exciting relationship with Notre Dame University in Australia who offer an I.B. Teacher Training Degree. Next term we will be hosting one of their trainee teachers to do her practicum for 10 weeks. Kathryn Archer is looking for a safe, relatively low cost place to stay. If it was near the school, that would be good too. She’s happy to flatshare or rent a room. If you have any suggestions please contact Ms Aniva or email her on [email protected]
Holiday School Office Opening Hours.
During the holiday period the school office will be open from 8am to 3pm. If you need help or information, please call in during this time.
Old Photos and other Documents from the School’s Past.
As part of the 25th Anniversary Celebrations, we are looking to create an archive of scanned documents that record the history of the school. Due to the floods that the school has experienced in the past, the school has very few documents that show the history of ISN. We are especially looking for pictures of “the old school”, but if you have any old photos, reports, yearbooks, concert or graduation programmes or other documents we would be happy to receive them and to store them safely. Alternatively we can scan them and return them to you. It’s also possible that you know of somebody who has been part of the school in the past who may be able to help, please ask them. Please send them to the office so we can start this important work. Thanks
Enjoy your holiday break!
Please give serious consideration to serving on the School Committee. A nomination form is on the next page. Please fill it in and return it to Ms Venice. You can also get copies of the nomination form from Ms Ledua in the school office.
