The SchoolInternational School Ho Chi Minh City American Academy (ISHCMC American Academy) was founded as an American-curriculum school in 2012. Prior to the 2012-2013 academic year, the school was known as City College Campus and ran an IGCSE curriculum. ISHCMC American Academy is accredited by CIS and NEASC. It is adjacent to its sister school International School Ho Chi Minh City, CEEB code 698010, founded in 1993.

CommunityOur school community comprises of 220 students from grades 6 to 12 and 21 full-time faculty members. 80% of our faculty is from the United States, and we also have faculty from Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Korea, New Zealand, and Vietnam. Over 70% of our full-time faculty members have earned at least one post-graduate degree.

97% of our students are Vietnamese nationals. Our maximum class size is 24, although many of our advanced classes for upper-classmen and intensive EAL courses have much smaller class sizes.

Calendar ISHCMC American Academy runs on a quarterly marking calendar starting in mid-August and running through mid-June. High school credit is granted on a semester system, with two quarters making up each semester. The first semester finishes in late January or early February.

Academic ProgramOur curriculum is based on AERO standards. Students can start earning high-school credit in grades 7 & 8 by taking Algebra 1, Geometry or Mandarin 1 and 2. High school seniors require at least 24 credits to graduate. As many of our students follow an accelerated Mathematics and World Languages program, it is possible for some to graduate after grade 11 if they earn the correct credits in other core subject areas.

Dual Enrollment with Syracuse UniversityOne of the hallmarks of our academic program is our involvement with Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA). We have four faculty members who have trained with SUPA to offer Syracuse University courses for credit to our juniors and seniors. Students register online as non-matriculated students of SU, and upon completion of their dual enrollment courses receive an SU transcript in addition to their high school course credit. We are the only school in Vietnam to offer this program.

Grading PoliciesWe use number grades from 0 to 100, and we calculate both weighted and unweighted GPA. Weighted GPA values are used for class rank and honor roll designation.

By special arrangement with a faculty member, grade 12 students may opt to take part in a Teaching Assistantship or Independent Study. Students are allowed a maximum of three AP courses, and all advanced courses (pre-AP, AP, and dual enrollment) require instructor and counselor permission to enroll.

Transfer Credit PoliciesMany of our students come from different schools, within Vietnam and around the world. It is typical to see a senior transcript reflecting three or four different curricular systems: IB, Vietnamese, IGCSE and American.

We grant a maximum of 8 transfer credits per academic year. For students who are coming from a Vietnamese-medium school, we will count EAL courses toward the English Language Arts graduation requirement. If a student fails a subject at a transfer school, we will not grant credit for that subject unless the student can prove competency in the subject area through external exam results, such as passing scores on an IGCSE certificate.

When a high school student applies to ISHCMC-American Academy, a transfer credit audit is
