International Womens Day 2016 A Pledge for Parity 2 Pledge for Parity International Womens Day International Womens Day 2016 Globally, women continue to contribute to the social, economic, cultural and political success of the society. Each year, the International Womens Day is celebrated to reflect on their achievements, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by women who have played an extraordinary role in making a difference in the society. While there is a lot to celebrate, there is a lot more to be done. The World Economic Forum in its Global Gender Gap Report 2015 estimates it will take until 117 years to achieve global gender parity in the workplace. In essence, the global empowerment of women cannot happen overnight. It will require persistence and a dedicated commitment to realize change on a global scale. We are on a journey, and it will take time to embrace the full potential of women at workforce. However, together, we can help accelerate that change by working together to strengthen the institutional arrangements, to reorganize norms and provide equal opportunities for all. Doing our bit by pledging for parity The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. The Constitution of India not only grants equality to women but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women for neutralizing the cumulative socio economic, education and political disadvantages faced by them. In commemorating this years International Womens Day, every man and women, can pledge and commit to make concentrated efforts in accelerating gender party. This can be a pledge for women at your workplace to: Help achieve their ambition Promote gender balanced leadership Respect and value differences Stand up equality of rights Call for diversity and inclusiveness at workplace 3 On the day of International Womens Day i.e. Tuesday, 8 March 2016, let us revisit some of our binding commitments and join forces to collectively help women advance and realise their true potential. On this day, I pledge... To not discriminate against any men and women on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth, and promote equality of opportunity to all in matters relating to employment. To encourage development of womens growth, education and career, without compromising on their rights and self-respect. To pay equal remuneration to men and women workers, as an employer, for same work or work of similar nature and to not discriminate while recruiting men and women workers (as enlisted in Equal Remuneration Act, 1976). To include women in Board of Directors of companies and encourage them to assume leadership roles on the Board. (As required by the provisions of Section 149 of the Companies Act, 2013, that mandates the appointment of at least one woman Director for any listed and public company with a paid up capital and turnover of more than INR 100 crores). To provide protection against sexual harassment at workplace and the right to work with dignity and the right to practice any profession or to carry any occupation, trade or business which includes a right to safe environment free from sexual harassment. (As enlisted in the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace [Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal] Act, 2013). To prevent or deter the commission of any act of sexual harassment at the work place and address the grievances in respect of sexual harassment at workplace in a time bound manner. (As enlisted in the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace [Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal] Act, 2013.) In spirit undertake corporate social responsibility and undertake appropriate activities for the promotion gender equality and empowerment of women (As provided for in provisions of the Companies [Corporate Social Responsibility Policy] Rules, 2014) that promotes the education, employment and enhancement of vocation skills for the welfare of SC, ST, OBCs, minorities and women. Let us also make efforts to promote gender equality by pledging to some of these non-binding commitments in the spirit of diversity and inclusiveness at workplace. 4 I also pledge... To focus on development of women at workplace by providing the high potential women with access to key experiences and opportunities that help them fully develop their potential. To foster the development of a supportive work environment including challenging seniors and colleagues to ensure men and women are treated equally. To promote diversity of women at workplace and provide skills training and other tools for overall development. To introduce progressive corporate policies that promotes a culture of change that includes encouraging men to take paternity leaves. To create awareness on the importance of gender parity and endeavour to provide gender sensitivity trainings to people. To close the pay gap within my organization and aim towards reaching a representation of 50-50 male female workforce ratio.
