Aloha Members, The end of March

and the month of April sure aren’t turning out how I had envisioned them back in January and February. The

world is experiencing one of the greatest challenges it has seen in a very long time. It is times like these that remind us we are all in this together and need each other to get through these tough times.

I want to express to the members of KYC that my primary concern during this challenging time is the safety and well being of all our staff and members. It is imperative that we take our current situation seriously and comply with all the directives put out by the CDC, WHO, State, and City and County of Honolulu.

Currently KYC is following all mandates and therefore has canceled all activities, parties, events, and shut down our bar and galley to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and prevent it from infecting anyone who calls KYC their home away from home.

I ask all members to please follow the directives that have been previously put out by myself in the weeks past. If you don’t have a reason to be at the club, please stay home. If you have traveled recently please self-quarantine. We are all in this together and it takes the efforts of everyone to help stop this Pandemic.

Due to the mandatory lockdown our front office is now closed. If you have a question or need to process something, please email the front office. Our office staff is working remote and will do the best they can to take care of your needs.

Boat movements will be put on hold for the month of April. We want all members to stay safe and at home and not worry about coming down to the club to move your boat.

Please understand that things are fluid during these times, and we all need to be flexible as new directives or mandates are handed down. KYC is a very strong club with amazing staff and members. I am confident if we all do our part during these challenging times that we will come out on the other side stronger and more united. Stay home, stay safe, and stay healthy! Mike Van Woerkom KYC Commodore

Aloha KYC family! The wind has been

really strong most of the month, luring you onto the seas. The sailing season just opened and

got "temporarily" halted almost at once. Not to worry. Your KYC staff know the difficulties you face looking out for your family and finding the essential source for that ‘elusive’ last 4-pack of toilet paper, much less be concerned about usually required boat movements (delayed through April 2020) or the April 15 tax deadline (delayed til July 15). With these constraints lifted, you can focus on you and your family’s continued good health.

You can certainly still take out your boat, catch those fish, play a set or two of tennis or just walk the piers for exercise. But, you must practice social distancing and not congregate with long missed friends. Give ‘em a wave and a challenge for the next regatta. That will keep the next race fresh in their minds. In the future.

Post-Covid-19, eligible boat drivers can check out a club boat from the front office using the new boat logs constructed by Jesse and Amber (showing important boat status info on check out/in).

Meanwhile, if you are "bored out of your tree", quarantined to the house (Bummer!!) or just want to maintain a safe healthy distance, you can use your time to great advantage. Below are some tips: 1) If your boat is 26’ or longer, bring your boat’s registration up to date by renewing online. Yes, you must have already presented adequate proof of insurance in-person at a DOBOR office. Yes, some members have complained about the length of time it takes online. But, if you’ve got time now, use it. Go to: vessel.ehawaii.gov 2)Take a safety course online with the Coast Guard. Come on, you have been putting it off. Do it now. Follow this link for a simple tutorial: Uscgboating.org 3)If you can sew, use this link to view a YouTube tutorial on making a face mask for your use or to donate for others. https://youtu.be/DqlmDf6_hsY 4)You can help others by calling club members who live alone, have mobility limitations, are too frail to take chances outside their home. Logon to your KYC website, go to member central and addresses to touch base with others.

In the meantime, stay healthy and mindful. Practice all those good, cleanliness habits you poo-poo-ed until this month. We want to see you back at the club for dinner, for racing and raising a celebratory glass after this event passes. Aloha! Susie

COMMODORE Mike Van Woerkom

REAR COMMODORE Susie Jannuzzi

March came in like a Lamb and went out like a Lion, at least that is a saying I remember growing up as March is one of those months

that could go either direction, but it always referred to the weather. This year that saying seems to be true given COVID-19. I’m sure everyone is on news overload on that topic and is well informed and compliant on the new way of life through this season.

Let’s talk a bit about the beginning of March, we had a great turnout at the Newcomers' Pupu Party on March 7 and then on the 8th we had another killer IRF day with heavy breeze. I was lucky to get together another top notch crew to help me out on Papio to get the J80 up on a plane and humming. I’ve really enjoyed the start to A series this year with good breeze and great competition. The next weekend on the 15th, while the kids were competing in the Baron’s Cup at Hawaii Kai Boat Club, I was lucky enough to join Raoul Magana to crew on Hana Hou and compete in the Classboat C race. It was my first time crewing a Cal 20, so Raoul had to give a lot of instructions and have a lot of patience but it somehow worked out. The Cal 20 races are a completely different experience from IRF races and it was some fun competition to be part of. I was excited that we ended up first for the day due to consistency in finishing in the top five for all four races.

After a great start to the month our luck ran out before we could hold the IRF Wahine race on the 22nd. We did get a start to the Thursday Night Bulkhead races for a few weeks which is always a great time. We also had the chance to get our new club Waszp’s out on the water for a foiling clinic. Coach Jesse had several kids out in the bay learning how to foil and getting hooked on the new class of boats at the club. You may have seen them in the new rack in the "Back Forty" storage area.

Now our the new life in quarantine we will need to hibernate as long as it takes to get through the COVID-19 situation. Stay positive, get some exercise and develop a routine for your day. You may even want to check out something like Virtual Regatta for your racing fix during the downtime. We hope to see things back to normal sooner rather than later, but for the unforeseeable future all activities at KYC are suspended until further notice. Thanks, Pete

VICE COMMODORE Pete Stokka

In accordance with Emergency Order Number 2020-02, the Kaneohe Yacht Club Office will

remain closed through April 30, 2020. Emails to the office staff and to [email protected] will be monitored remotely.

We will reply to your Emails as time permits.

We started out the month with a busy schedule

with kids participating in the first HYSA of the year

run by the Hickam "Wet Hens" out of Rainbow Bay

Marina. With winds forecast in the high 20's the El

Toros all took smaller training sails and most Lasers

used Radial and 4.7 sails. The wind mostly cooperated

and KYC was represented well!

The WASZP and Laser rack is complete! Just needs a coat of paint. It can

fit 7 WASZPS on top and 6 Lasers underneath. A great space saver and income

generator located along the fence in the “back 40”. Thanks to Junior sailors JP

Lattanzi, Gavin Ball, Charlie Parsons, Zach Severson, Pearl Lattanzi, Kylie Olson

and Sage Andrews for the help! Maintenance Mike also got us started in the right

direction with Mike Pacholski’s plans, Patrick Tara, Andy Bates support! Work

parties are alive and well at KYC! The finished product is impressive!

There are now 8 of these boats that will be at KYC. We have gotten many

new junior members and more juniors inspired by these boats! We had 6-7 kids

in the morning introduction class and 6-8 kids in the afternoon racing class. Big

smiles all around and they all were able to get foiling and improved dramatically

even though we had to cut the clinic short.

WASZP’s & wind foilers rigging up for one last day of sailing before the home stay.

Now for the not so good news. Our spring sailing classes, WASZP clinic and

Adult Sailing classes have all been postponed until further notice. We hope the

home stay gives families time together and that we will be able to resume some

recreational sailing with social distancing in the future. Long term we will have

to see what is best for everyone. Please stay home for this time and I’m looking

forward to hearing stories about what projects and different creative things your

families did together. One neat thing our family is doing is a daily online live

geography “Where in the world” virtual online meeting for school kids. Hawai’i

is going to be first with hard clues such as we have 10 of the world's 14 climate

zones in our state. It’s also hosted by Brad Dellenbaugh so I’m sure there will be

some cool sailing locations and facts. I’ve heard of many other creative learning

opportunities and we should use this time to stay connected with friends and learn

from all the creative technology out there! Stay safe everyone and remember

keep 6’ of space and no touch da face!!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Planning for the Pacific Cup is well underway! Committees are working hard preparing and planning for the arrival of the racers and their families. In anticipation of over 60 boats, many hands will be needed to make it successful. The first start is June 29, 2020. We could see boats finishing as early as Friday July 9th with the heaviest activity July 11-13. Committees are looking for volunteers. If you are available and would like to help, look for the sign-up sheet on KYC’s main notice board near the Bar in Ma Shultz Lounge, or you may contact the Chair of the committee listed below. This is a great opportunity for members to get to know others at the club as well as experience all the excitement of greeting the boats with their crews and enjoying the various entertainment events during the week. This is sure to be a lot of fun and a very memorable Pacific Cup.

STAFF DUTY OFFICER (SDO) This committee receives, records and posts racing yacht check-ins, ETAs, and disseminates information to other committees. SDO is the first to board the yachts after they are moored to ensure that they are in compliance with certain racing rules and Hawaii State Agriculture Regulations—training will be provided. Chairs: Beau Lani Barker and Lauren Faulkner.

COMMUNICATIONS As the official race radio operators, shifts for this committee are manned in the back room on the Upper Deck. They begin communication with the racers long before they reach the finish line. Shifts for watch standers are scheduled until all racers are safely finished. There will be training, so no radio experience is required. Chairs: Ellis Abram and Walt Neimczura.

ESCORT BOATS Escort boats shifts are available to bring racing yachts from the finish line to mooring at KYC. This job requires knowledge of the obstacles in Kaneohe Bay and the ability to escort yachts through both the Main Ship Channel and the Sampan Channel at any time, day or night. until they’re all here. Captains use their own boats and normally gather their own crew to assist them; however, some volunteer crew is always needed. Chair: Tony Hoff.

MOORING This team is responsible for mooring the finished yachts at the bulkhead, in a slip, or anchored outside the coral patch. Easier said than done. Chairs: Ralph Foulger and Mike Barker.

LEIS & TRAYS With lots of aloha, this committee prepares mai-tais and fresh pineapple. They deliver them, along with cold beer, water and a fresh lei, to all crew members on board the finishing yacht once they are cleared by the SDO. Chair: Dana Knight and Jean Fernie.

BOAT LEI/DECORATIONS A boat lei for all finishing boats began several races ago. With over 60 boats arriving we need many hands to make these beautiful cherished leis. In addition, we want our special place to be kept beautiful throughout the week. After lei making the extra foliage will be used to decorate the club. Chairs: Jane Sawyer and Terry Beuret.

INFORMATION DESK Knowledge is power. This is where the racers and their families come for information. A table is manned daily to assist racers and their families with any questions they may have. Chairs: Becky Dodini and Fran Tannen.

On March 7 the Deckhands had a great time assisting the Commodores by

hosting the Newcomers Pupu Party. Thanks to Sherri Phillips for organizing the

event with the help of the rest of the Deckhands gang. This year the club

welcomed 22 new members, a combination of returnees, families, singles and

couples. As the Newcomers arrived they were greeted with a beautiful white lei

and then given an “opportunity” to volunteer for various fleets and upcoming

events. Following a brief introduction by each of the fleets, we were all treated

to a little vignette from each newcomer. They are a great group and will be

wonderful participating additions to our club. And then there was the fabulous

food!! There’s no doubt that the Newcomers must be thrilled to have joined a

group with so many gourmet cooks. Thank you to all contributors.

Regrettably the Keiki Easter Party has had to be cancelled, to the

disappointment of both the kids and the Deckhands.

Sadly too, the Locker is closed until ??

The April Deckhand of the Month is Wayne

Jackson because he helps with just about everything

we do. Thank you, Wayne, and remember to come by

the locker and use your 25% discount up to $100.

IRF A-2

Photos: Ken Fitzgerald-Case

IRF A2 regatta was one of the windiest regattas in the last

five years with gusts over 25mph; enough to blow the snot off

your nose! There were plenty of wipeouts, but fortunately no

injuries or major breakdowns.

In Race 1, the wind was slightly to the right with planing

conditions for the Melges. Rick Osborne and his team put on a

good show leading around the first downwind mark, but the

Backbreaker team eked ahead of them in the second upwind leg.

Shaman, with Victor Lozano and his team, were a close third

for a Melges 24 sweep.

Race 2 showed a big shift to the left and heavily favored

left end of the starting line. As a result, there was a pile up at

the start of the pin end. Restraining Order with Maddy Kennedy

and crew got their act together for a close second; it was

amazing to see them get that overpowered boat around the

course. This race was pivotal for Papio with Pete Stokka and

crew who lost to Shaman by 7 seconds on corrected which

resulted in a well-deserved 2nd overall for Shaman, and 3rd

place overall for Papio.

Race 3 had the wind progressively shifting to the left with

the "B" buoy as our upwind mark. Papio had their best finish on

corrected with a 2nd place. Shaman was 3rd place with a one

second delta to fourth place Crusader.

A big mahalo to the race committee, Jeff and Katie Cruise,

and others for running a great regatta. A big thanks to all of the

crews for a job well done in trying conditions; remember sailing

is a team sport. Also, thanks to the mark gods for not having an

"A" mark so Backbreaker would not get confused as to which

mark to round. And lastly, thanks to Team Backbreaker, Ian

Towill, Mike Price, Kara Leary, and Matt Grimsly for their near

flawless boat handling which resulted in our picket fence.

Every year, the Pacific Yacht Club loves hosting the Wahine

series. We enjoy showing off the turquoise waters of Hickam Harbor

and sharing our small fleet of dinghies with some of the best sailors

this island has to offer. We watched the predicted winds creep higher

and higher as the race day quickly approached. And as Guy Hagi

predicted, the morning of February 29, we had winds blowing in the

mid to high 20's with gusts well into the 30's. BUT, we also had 24

excited racers signing in, filling all eight boats in our RS Quest fleet.

There was no way we were canceling this race!

The Race Committee set our course and the safety boat was

ready for anything. With all eight Quests now out on the water and

ready to race, a squall hit hard soaking everyone. The skies were

dark and the winds were howling but we started Race One anyway.

These ladies were amazing...the winds began to blow harder and now

gusts were clocking in the 40's. The small boats capsized easily, even

with small sails and rockstar sailors on tiller. The safety boat had

their hands full making sure everyone was safe but all we saw from

the eight boats was ear to ear smiles. Everyone had a blast keeping

that boat upright and they did an amazing job!

We only managed to get two races in before we called it a day.

Once all 24 racers and the fleet made it back to the dock safe and

sound, everyone was ready for the gala (and dry clothes!) The ladies

laughed and shared stories of their various adventures on the water

over yummy food and cold drinks. (The PYC even had some Sailor

Jerry Rum and put on coffee and hot tea for those racers really

needing to warm up).

Even though we didn't get but two races in, everyone had a

fabulous time meeting each other and enjoying the company of the

Pacific Yacht Club and all the Wahine racers.

Congratulations go out to the top 3 finishers:

1st: PHYC Jrs Elly, Faith, & Jarah

2nd: WYC FireFly crew Anj, Kerri & Amanda

3rd: PYC Wet Hens Brantly, Cassie & Katie

Unfortunately, the KYC IRF scheduled for March 22 has been

cancelled due to COVID 19 precautionary measures so we look

forward to getting together as soon as we get through this trying time.

TENNIS FLEET by Donlei Darnell

March was a very rainy month so I hear sacrifices and prayers were offered

for a dry March 14 for the tournament. It worked and although the courts needed

drying off, it was a wonderful day for tennis. There were 24 players !! and some

great games!! We also had a new fleet member join in……….WELCOME Dave

Marabella…………and we hope it was an awesome time for him.

Winners for the Women were:

1st Margaret Peebles

2nd Wendy Jackson

3rd Jan Bodinus and Sime Gross

For the Men:

1st Bob Babyack

2nd Chuck Joy

3rd Rob Rietow

Other players were: Kit and Terry Beuret, Linnea and Steve Brooks, Betsy

Denzer, Wayne Jackson, Susie Jannuzzi, Kathy Joy, Richard Leclerc, Bob and Liz

Meierdiercks, Harvey Minsky, Dana Nottage, Lynn Pease, Aaron Phillips, and

Cindy Siok.

Because of the ‘World Gone Mad’ the tournament and Pot Luck in April have

been cancelled. Let’s hope that May brings flowers, showers, and getting our lives

back……!

The Tennis Fleet celebrated the

day’s tournament with a last Hurrah

before the cancellations of activities

through April. Susie Jannuzzi even

greeted guests as they arrived with a

small amulet to ward off viruses!!

Fleet Captain Lynn Pease introduced

the evening’s potluck dinner,

thanking all who participated in the

tournament and potluck.

The theme of the potluck was ‘

Green’ and most members wore

something green. Decorations were

green and some salads and desserts

too. Rennie Faith created labor

intensive table decorations with tennis balls cut in half and filled with succulents

surrounding candles. “ There are lots of uses for tennis balls,” she said. She also

wrapped Hersey’s chocolates with small banners reading, ‘You Are Being Served”.

Thanks to Rennie who was assisted by Sherri Phillips and John and Sime Gross.

Barbra Green decorated the dessert table with a tempting green cake.

Lynn introduced new members: Beth Grainger and David Marabella. Dave,

who recently returned to the islands, watched the whole tournament, sizing up the

competition. We will look forward to seeing him in the next event. Lynn also

congratulated Wendy Jackson, who entered a tournament for the first time.

The March New Comer’s Party saw more new members signing up with the

Fleet. Mill and Katie Brown, Tony and Susan Hoff, Nick Rich and his wife Ellie

Cole, and Sara Miller.

The Fleet also has a new banner thanks to the efforts of Lynn Pease. The

banner first appeared at the New Comers’ Party. It reads “Kaneohe Yacht Club

Tennis Fleet”, embellished with the club burgee, tennis balls and our new motto,

‘Playing with Aloha Since 1956”. It will hang at all Fleet events.

Joann Goebert, Treasurer, will appreciate a flow of checks until the last

member has paid. Don’t hesitate…..it is already April. You can mail your check

to her at 684 Kaimalino Street, Kailua, Hawaii, 96734.

Thanks to all who support the Fleet. Let’s all follow mandated rules during this

time of crisis. Let’s help to get our world up and running as quickly as we can!!

A Message to Members

KYC’s youth sailing program has given my son a community. As his mom, I’ve driven into and out of the

parking lot so many times that I’ve had the chance to meet and talk to many members, people that are at the club just

as much as my son. With the Coronavirus, social distancing, and a forced closure of such an important

community center, I miss seeing so many familiar faces. I’d like to reach out and offer my time to anyone in this

community. If you need groceries or prescriptions or a ride to the doctors office or bank or help of any kind, if I can’t do it, I can help find someone who can. Please give me a call.

808-782-5271. I’m Jennifer, Mani Pahuatini’s mom.
