We have been researching about the Wahine disaster and these were our key questions.

1.When and where did the Wahine sink? 2.How did the Wahine sink? 3.What caused the Wahine to sink?

The Wahine sailed from Littleton harbour in the savage weather and sank on Barrett’s reef in the

Wellington harbour . The Wahine was at the entrance of Wellington harbour, a few hundred yards off shore when it sunk. The Wahine sailed in crashing rain, massive waves and high seas when it entered the Cooks Strait. The Wahine sunk on the 10th of April 1968 at 6:40am when it hit Barretts reef.

Before the Wahine sunk it was clearly visible from the shore. When the Wahine approached Wellington harbour winds were gale force .There were massive waves at the entrance of Wellington habour. 610 passengers were on the Wahine and 52 passengers died on the Wahine’s dramatic journey. Spray and sleet whipped off the sea when the Wahine sunk. The Wahine was uncontrollable when it sunk. When the Cyclone Gieselle hit the Wahine crashed into the jagged rocks of Barretts reef .The Wahine was off course when it sank. The Wahine’s radar failed an hour before it sunk. Alarm bells were ringing 2 hours before it sunk. Cries of despair were heard by the passengers as the Wahine sunk. The Wahine’s engines shuddered to a stop just before it sunk. The Wahine was a few hundred yards off shore when it sunk.

Rescuers in rescue boats battled the violent storm to save the Wahine’s passengers. The Wahine seemed to be moving slowly backwards towards the rocks from the view from the shore. The Wahine was drifting helplessly up the Wellington harbour. There was a huge Cyclone Gieselle that struck caused violent weather before the Wahine sunk. The Wahine was drifting towards the Wellington Harbour lighthouse and Barretts reef.
