Wwhat’s on

It would be easier to say what isn’t on in andaround Ipswich: the 2012 Ipswich calendar isgetting so full. Perhaps the jewel in the crown isthe Ipswich Arts Festival (Ip-art), two weeks ofmusic, opera, literature, theatre, cinema anddance.

Much of Ip-art is free, including the region’sbiggest outdoor music event with seven stagesof fun in the park at Ipswich Music Day.

But there’s so much more. We have beautifuland peaceful parks and for an even morerelaxed pace, the annual Pin Mill Barge Matchsees graceful sailing barges competing on theRiver Orwell.

The Suffolk Show, in early June, shows off thevery best of the county for two of the mostpopular days of the year in Suffolk.

It doesn’t end with the summer. Ipswich hoststhe biggest and best firework display in theEast of England in Christchurch Park inNovember and people visit from miles around.

If you have any time or energy left, you canhead out to the Aldeburgh Festival at Snape, sample delicious local produce at the SuffolkFood & Drink Festival or join in the SuffolkTown and Country Walking Festival. More than40 walks are organised with experiencedleaders, ranging from short leisurely rambles

to a walk over several days from one side ofthe county to another.

And we cannot look to 2012 withoutmentioning how close Ipswich is to London -less than an hour to the Olympic Stadium.

You can visit some of the UK’s most beautifulcoast and countryside and still be closeenough for a day trip to the London Games.Better still, make Ipswich your base for theGames – you will be in good company. TheOlympic Torch Relay is rolling into town forSuffolk’s only overnight celebration in July.

Speaking of sport, Ipswich Town FC is steepedin history with two former England managers(Ramsey and Robson) among its legends.

You can enjoy top speedway, too, along withthe thrills and spills of stock car racing.

Look out for the special Love Ipswich 2012what’s on brochure for a full listing of events.

Ipswich has a long and proud history datingback more than 1,500 years. The town wasawarded its Royal Charter by King John in1200 and for centuries Ipswich was a majorport and built fighting ships for the Crown.

Local adventurers and merchants traded allover the world, settled in North America(founding Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, some13 years before the Pilgrim Fathers) andcircumnavigated the globe.

In fact, we (quietly) boast that Ipswich is theoldest English town and we are proud of ourillustrious inhabitants.

Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII’s right-hand man,was born in Ipswich. Chaucer’s family wereinn-keepers here, Dickens used Ipswich as asetting for his Pickwick Papers, and cartoonistCarl Giles worked in the town centre. HisGrandma statue takes pride of place in GilesCircus. One of England’s greatest heroes, LordNelson, was High Steward of Ipswich, Thomas

Gainsborough lived and painted in Ipswich, while actor David Garrick made hisprofessional debut in the town. PrinceObolensky, England’s dashing rugby winger, isburied here and commemorated by a stunningstatue in the town centre.

We have fantastic historic buildings such asthe Friends’ Meeting House, ChristchurchMansion, the Ancient House and Wolsey’sGate, while the oldest bells in Christendomcan still be heard on occasion at St Lawrence’sChurch in the town centre. These are just afew of the 600 listed buildings in town givingIpswich architectural bragging rights.

And did we mention the newest university inEngland on the Waterfront? In Ipswich we’restill making history!
