Career overview

Rob is a Safety Coach and Consultant helping

organisations develop their leadership teams and

safety professionals. Prior to that, over a 17 year

period he worked in operational and safety

positions with a global organisation involved in

mining and manufacturing.

Simon runs his own executive coaching practice.

Prior to that, over a 28 year career, he has held

Managing Director positions in mining, quarrying,

manufacturing and engineering both in the UK and

internationally.

Why we have put together this course

The Safety Professional’s perspective – We

spend much of our lives thinking about and

working on competence; whether that’s our own,

our colleagues’ or line managers’. Everybody

remembers that; ‘Competence is the combination

of knowledge, skills, experience… ‘ but forget the

fourth bit ‘…and other qualities’.

Where I see most progress on safety is where

those other qualities are well represented. They

include the abilities to influence line management,

to see the bigger business picture, and to be able

to reflect and adapt in different situations.

All the business leaders I have supported, from

highly positive to highly negative, were a challenge

in their own way. The key to success was being

able to adapt my approach to support and

challenge each of them.

The Managing Director’s perspective – The mix

of characters I met around boardroom tables

and in executive meetings, all had different

approaches to safety. At best, when everybody

was engaged with safety, you still had to find

agreement on the way forward. At worst, when

there wasn’t engagement from everybody,

progress slowed and it was frustrating for me and

for the safety team supporting us.

I found that the key to overcoming these

challenges was to properly understand the peo-

ple involved, by digging deeper to find what really

made them tick. Having an ability to challenge and

support colleagues with well judged coaching and

mentoring underpinned this.

Continuing to rely on telling and instructing only

won’t get you to your goal of zero harm. If you

carry on doing the same things you will get the

same result.

Sound Familiar?

All of our safety systems and procedures are in place and working well,

But we are still experiencing incidents and are not sure what to do differently

None of our line managers is actively negative about safety. But with so much

else going on in the business they are not doing what they need to do on safety

My team of safety advisors is good. In fact they were integral in the business’s

safety improvement over the last 5 years. It’s just that their interpersonal skills

are not up to the current challenges we face

I know what we need to do to bridge the final gap from good safety to great

safety management. It’s just that I can’t find a way to get all the business leaders

to consistently work with me on it

All of our line managers have different characters. They all have their own

particular ways of avoiding what they need to do on safety

We have now done so much ’telling and ‘instructing’ on safety that it is having a

negative effect. We now need the management and workforce to find their own

motivation to keep the momentum on safety

Because middle and senior management’s behaviour towards safety seems

unengaged and inconsistent, so is the rest of the workforce

Competent

Person?

The competence that health and safety

professionals should possess when

advising organisations is clearly defined.

The Health and Safety Executive in the

UK states that this is made up of 4

elements (see opposite).

Many safety professionals have the

knowledge and skill from training

programmes. Experience is developed

throughout their working career.

The difficult element is ‘other qualities’.

In our experience this is the most critical,

but elusive, factor in reaching safety

excellence and then staying there.

How do you influence key decision

makers to engage and make

commitments on safety?

Specific training has never really

addressed this issue, until now.

How this

translates into

better safety

We believe that safety should be led by

the people who lead the business.

If the interaction with these individuals

is regular, planned and also includes

those other qualities, you will see a

dramatic change in safety performance

We have experienced how this

relationship can really work to deliver

results.

Through this course we share

our experiences and set challenging

exercises in relation to what you will

experience in your efforts to reduce

workplace injuries.
