The smallest unit of living organisms. “Building blocks” for organisms. Have many functions. Are necessary for life. Are classified as 1) Plant or 2) Animal. Plant and animal cells have the same

parts.

Animal cells are typical eukaryotic cells, enclosed by a plasma membrane and containing a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles.

Unlike the eukaryotic cells of plants and fungi, animal cells do not have a cell wall. This feature was lost in the distant past by the single-celled organisms, which gave rise to the kingdom Animalia.

Most animal cells are diploid, meaning that their chromosomes exist in homologous pairs.

Plant cells are also eukaryotic cells that differ in several key respects from the cells of other eukaryotic organisms.

Plants are unique. They are organisms whose cells have membrane-enclosed nuclei and organelles, because they can manufacture their own food. Chlorophyll, which gives plants their green color, enables them to use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars and carbohydrates, which are chemicals the cell uses for fuel.

Plants can be broadly categorized into two basic types: vascular and nonvascular.

Page 7: Intro To Cells Final

Large oval body near the center of the cell.

The control center for all activity.

Surrounded by a nuclear membrane.

Page 8: Intro To Cells Final

Are clear fluid sacs that act as storage areas for food, minerals, and waste.

In plant cells the vacuoles are large and mostly filled with water. This gives the plant support.

In animal cells the vacuoles are much smaller.

Power house of the cell.

Center of respiration for the cell.

They release energy for cell functions.

Page 10: Intro To Cells Final

Tube like structures that have tiny sacs on their ends.

They help package protein.

Page 11: Intro To Cells Final

Tiny spherical bodies that help make proteins.

Found in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum.

Located in all cells.

Page 12: Intro To Cells Final

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum has functions in several metabolic processes.

Consists of tubules and vesicles that branch out.

Known for its storage of calcium ions in muscle cells.

Page 13: Intro To Cells Final

The surface has protein-manufacturing ribosomes giving it a "rough" appearance.

Has systems of membranes throughout the cytoplasm.

Passageway for material moving though the cell.

Page 14: Intro To Cells Final

The main microtubule organizing center.

The centrosome is duplicated only once per cell cycle.

RNA-based rather than DNA-based.

Page 15: Intro To Cells Final

The outer boundary of the cell.

It separates the cell from other cells.

It is porous, therefore allowing molecules to pass through.

Page 16: Intro To Cells Final

" Suicide Sacs " Small structures

that contain enzymes used in digestion.

If a lysosome were to burst it could destroy the cell.

Only in the animal cell.

Page 17: Intro To Cells Final

Non living structure that surrounds the plant cell.

Protects and supports the cell.

Made up of a tough fiber called cellulose.

Only in the plant cell.

Page 18: Intro To Cells Final

Contains a green pigment known as chlorophyll which is important for photosynthesis.

Absorbs light and use it in conjunction with water and carbon dioxide to produce sugars.

Capture light energy to conserve free energy.
