HP ScanJet 5550c, connected to the Server

HP LaserJet 2300n, directly connected to the Network

The Server has a dedicated Internet Line, (DSL, 64k downstream, 32K

upstream). Access is provided by Grameen Internet. The settings are:

IP: 203.191.32.86

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Def. gateway: 203.191.32.3

DNS 1: 203.191.33.5

DNS 2: 203.191.33.8

The internet access is by default fire walled with the standard Win XP firewall.

Phone access is provided by a “Panasonic 308 EASA Phone” appliance. Right

now, there are 9 phones attached, three more are needed. A problem is that

there are only three outside lines, which cannot be expanded easily.

IT support and maintenance is handled by Technics Computers.

General suggestions:

• All of the PC’s need to have the recent Windows and Office updates

installed.

• The network switch is a 8-port model, which should be switched to one

with 16, maybe even 24 ports to accommodate visitors and future

workstations

Page 23: INTEGRATION OF MERCHANDISING MANAGEMENT

22

• The Internet Firewall (currently the one which is build-in with Windows

XP) is not very secure, nor configurable. I highly recommend buying a

hardware firewall and router that also provides a VPN connection to the

Germany office.

• Further the bandwidth should be upgraded to at least 128k downstream,

better would be 256k.

• The LAN port at the “visitor desk” (Currently with no desk. The port is at

the wall of one of the sample rooms) is inactive. It seems to be connected

to the switch but either the cable is faulty, or it is not connected properly.

• The internet connection via Grameen Internet is not reliable. I’ve been

assured by Mr. Sarkar of Technics Computers that we will regrettably

have to live with this, as Grameen is at the moment the most reliable

provider in Dhaka at all. Thus the bandwidth is not secure, and the

connection can fail at any moment. A solution would be to use a slightly

more stable dial-in access as backup. The suggested hardware router

should incorporate this functionality. Still I recommend to always

keeping in mind for future workflows that internet access may not work

at any given time.

• Email is currently handled by Grameen Internet too. Their email server is

not fire walled, and also a so-called “open relay” server, which means

that it will blocked by other email servers.

• More telephones can apparently be added easily. Technics Computer

should be asked if they can provide the service to connect them.

• Currently there is no backup implemented. There is a CD-writer in the

server, which could be used for this. As the documents folder alone

exceeds 1 GB of data, a tape backup would be more convenient.

Support and Maintenance: Currently handled by Technics Computers. They

should continue with this, but in the long run, hiring an employee who is

A SPECIFIC (MERCHANDISING MANAGEMEN) DEPARTMENT THAT

ASSIGNED TO ME FOR STUDY

INTRODUCTION:

The “Merchandising” is known to the persons specially involved in

garments trade. The term merchandising has been derived from the

‘merchandise”. Merchandise means buying and selling huge amounts of goods.

The term “MERCHANDISING” may be define as Person who

merchandises the goods, specifically for export purposes. Garments

merchandising means buying raw materials & accessories, producing garments,

maintaining required quality level and exporting the garments within scheduled

time.

I am working as a merchandiser in the organization. Here five

merchandisers working with different Buyer. At first the Buyer gives them a

inquiry sheet with measurement chart sketch of sample. Then they make a

development sample & send it to the Buyer. Buyer makes comments on it, it is

OK/ NOT. Then the question of price the merchandiser going to negotiate.

Sometimes they successful, sometimes they being fail. If they success they

order Yarn, Trims, & accessories. In front of their shipment time they are trying

to arrange everything as early as possible. When all items are in store then Yarn

is given for 2/3 pcs of garments sample send for make size set. When size set

made then they measure it. If it is OK the Yarn provide for 100% production. In

Summary and Recommendation

5.1 SOME PROBLEMS OF MERCHANDISING DEPARTMENT OF

ELEGANT TEAM DEVELOPMENT LIMITED:

It appears that merchandising management is one of the key areas of garment

sectors. But unfortunately, in Bangladesh merchandising management planning

and controlling is reported to be unsound I indicates that merchandising

management planning and controlling is extremely poor in the entire garments

buying house sectors in Bangladesh, which in turns, has adversely affected the

getting order from abroad.. In practice, I see some problems when I investigate

merchandising management system at Elegant Team development limited.

A. Lack of proper communication of different level of department

B. Failed to follow merchandising management technique like buyer attention

techniques, sampling techniques, order delivery techniques etc. For that

reason it failed sometime to determine target order quantity.

C. All the people are very helpful at Elegant team. Again some people use find

they are agree to help me but did not agree to teach. . But company

honorable Country Manager orders every one to help me. He is really

helpful to me

D. There is no specific Training and Research department in Elegant Team

Though the garments sector plays a very important role to earn foreign

exchange to our country, so buying house importance is very high. A large

amount of foreign money comes from the exporting of garments product.

Elegant Team development limited is very established garments exporting

buying house. Though a large number of workers maintain their live on this

sector. So, government should take special nursing in garments sector. Some

points are given to overcome the problems of inventory management of this

sector:

A. The authority should improve their knowledge about merchandising

management.

B. They should follow appropriate merchandising management technique.

C. Most of the officer has to motive to teach every employee and researcher of

their own inspiration

.

D. Every department will communicate their problem with other department of

the company.

E. A specific department for training and research, which will provide adequate

training and research facilities for personnel for development.

F. Elegant Team development limited should follow a specific inventory

costing method, in the context of rising trend in raw materials price.
