Lynn Miller, School Library System Director June 2015

Our mission is to be instructional partners in preparing life-long learners for the 21st century.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES: (ex. new initiatives, status of program, updates on older efforts, student achievements, etc.)

The New York State Library contacted each School Library System for assistance with the Microsoft settlement. Our schools that qualified for

the settlement funds are Fallsburg, Monticello and Liberty. Our understanding is that given the settlement size, Microsoft is looking to purchase

multi-year contracts of several databases for these schools. To date, we have not heard the results on this yet.

The SLS Council invited Jeffrey Urbin from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum to present to the group. He provided a

very informative program that will help our schools with the new Social Studies frameworks being rolled out.

At our last SLS Council has been discussing strategies to encourage our students to read over the summer. I have contacted my colleague at the

Ramapo Catskill Library System, Randy Enos, for the summer reading lists of favorite titles for kids; we have added as many of the titles that

are available in eBook form to OverDrive. During the month we have made bookmarks promoting summer reading and have begun distributing

them to the schools.

For July 8th

& 9th

, we have planned two mornings of hands-on workshops to learn about all the different digital services we provide. This is free

to our schools and an excellent way for teachers to broaden their skills and teaching resources.
