Introduction
Instruction manual SmartRadar Verification pin compensation Page 5
1 Introduction
When a radar level gauge is installed on a pressurized tank, both ISO1) and API
2) suggest to use so called
verification pins to verify the radar level measurement. Prime reason to use said verification pins is the
impossibility of doing a manual reference dip. With verification pins it is possible to verify the correct reading of
the radar measurement at specific heights while the tank is in operation.
The Enraf SmartRadar gauges support the use of verification pins via embedded software. The SmartRadar can
be switched to measure the pin positions. The reading can then be compared with the known position of the
pins.
It is advised to have three verification pins:
• Pin 1 at approximately 80 - 90 % of tank height
• Pin 2 at approximately 50 % of tank height
• Pin 3 at approximately 10 - 20 % of tank height
Pin 1 should be above maximum safe fill (so, it can always be measured), however there must be at least
0.6 m (2') free space from pin 1 to cone end. All pin positions should be measured with 1 mm (1/
32“) uncertainty
with reference to the ball valve.
Compensation principle
The SmartRadar can measure the position of the three pins when the Antenna Unit (for 873 SmartRadar) or the
973 SmartRadar LT housing is rotated 90°. The verification pins are then ‘visible’ to the SmartRadar.
1) Refer to ISO document 4266 part 3
2) Refer to API document Chapter 3.3
Introduction
Instruction manual SmartRadar Verification pin compensation Page 6
This can be done without closing the 1" (or 4") ball valve, as the Antenna Unit (for 873 SmartRadar) or the 973
SmartRadar LT housing is located above the tank separator.
After the command “verification pin measuring mode” is given to the SmartRadar, the measured positions of the
three pins can be requested. The “real” position of the pins (from tank drawing) and the “measured” position of
the pins are programmed in the SmartRadar.
After the SmartRadar is placed in the normal (product measuring) mode, the measurement is automatically
corrected for the found verification pin positions.
Figure 1.2 illustrates the correction method
for verification pins.
Once the position of the verification pins is
determined, the SmartRadar can be
switched into verification mode to verify the
measured (and corrected) distances with the
real pin positions.
If the correction is properly made, both
values of each of the three pins should be
equal to each other.
Determining ullage position of verification pins
Instruction manual SmartRadar Verification pin compensation Page 7
2 Determining ullage position of verification pins
At installation of the verification pins, the
distances of the pins towards the flange of
the stilling well (L1, L2 and L3) are noted.
The SmartRadar measures ullage from the
radar zero point.
Note: The radar zero point from the
SmartRadar with an H04 Antenna
is located at the flange of the tank
separator.
Step 1)
The distance from the flange of the stilling
well to the flange of the tank separator
(offset) must be determined accurately.
To have an indication that this distance
is measured accurate enough, repeat
this measurement three times.
The difference between each of the measurements may not differ more than 1 mm (1/
32"). If there is a too
large discrepancy, repeat the measurement until a set of three consecutive measurements is obtained with the
appropriate accuracy.
Step 2)
Calculate the ullage position of the three verification pins by adding the measured distance of step 1.
Ullpin1
= L1 + offset
Ullpin2
= L2 + offset
Ullpin3
= L3 + offset
These three ullage values are the real
ullages of the verification pins and have
to be programmed in item PC (refer to
section 3.1).
Verification pin measuring mode

3 Verification pin measuring mode
The verification can be done prior to filling the tank with product in order to check correct alignment of the pins.
After the tank is filled, the verification should be repeated.
Due to vapour influence, causing a change of the propagation speed of the radar signal, small deviations may
be observed.
3.1 Preparations for verification pin measuring mode
Assumed is an already installed and pre-commissioned SmartRadar.
If possible, it is recommended to make a reflection diagram (use the Ensite service tool). Check on the reflection
diagram for peaks of the 3 pins. Its amplitude should be below the thresholds.
If the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing is turned in verification pin position mode, the
signals of the 3 pins will be approximately 25 to 30 dB higher. Make sure that then the peaks are above the
thresholds, else they are not detected. If required, lower the threshold in one or more of the zones.
Item Name Description
W2= Protection level 2 Enter protection level 2.
PC.0.1= Ullage verification pin 1 Format according to item LD. Physical ullage of verification pin 1
with respect to radar zero (refer to section 2).
PC.1.1= Ullage verification pin 2 Format according to item LD. Physical ullage of verification pin 2
with respect to radar zero (refer to section 2).
PC.2.1= Ullage verification pin 3 Format according to item LD. Physical ullage of verification pin 3
with respect to radar zero (refer to section 2).
PR= Position radar Format according to item LD. The position radar item can now be
given better as the offset is known. PR is the distances:
tank zero - flange stilling well added with the measured offset.
CS= Compensation switch This item has ten positions. When the fourth position is set on:
· R enables verification pin correction
· - disables the verification pin correction
Check whether the verification pin correction is disabled. If not,
set the fourth position of item CS at ‘ - ’.
EX Exit Exit protection level 2. After the exit command, the above items
become active.
An exit command had to be given to activate the entered settings.
Execute the verification pin measurement procedure:
Item Name Description
W2= Protection level 2 Enter protection level 2.
PP Pin measuring mode This command sets the SmartRadar in the verification pin
measuring mode. The level is stored as last valid level with a
“block” status.

3.2 Rotating the Antenna in verification pin measuring position
In normal (product measuring) position, the E-field (electrical field of the microwave) is located perpendicular to
the direction of the verification pins. In this position, the verification pins are less visible to the SmartRadar.
In verification pin measuring position, the E-field should be in parallel with the verification pin direction (refer to
figure 3.1). Then the reflections from the verification pins are stronger and recognized by the SmartRadar.
1) Release the coupling nut of the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing.
2) Lift the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing from tank separator.
3) Rotate the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing for 90°. This can only be done in
one direction because of the locking pin.
4) Place 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing on tank separator; mind locking pin.
5) Secure the coupling nut of the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing.

3.3 Verification pin position measurement
After the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT is rotated in the verification pin measuring
position, the peaks of the three (or less if the product level covers one or more pins) verification pins are now
above the thresholds. The ullage values (distance from the radar zero point) of all peaks above the threshold
are stored in item 5D.
Item 5D is an indexed item with ten elements. Request at least four elements, as the peak from the product is
also one of the measured peaks. Check which of the ullage values are close to the already given pin positions
of item PC.
The measured pin positions from item 5D are to be copied in item PB:
Item Name Description
FC Freeze RSP data This command stores (freezes) a complete set of radar signal
processing data. This ensures a contiguous set of data for the
next item (5D).
Wait 5 seconds, before issuing the next items.
5D.0.4 Position of detected peaks This item is to request the measured ullages from the three
verification pins.
PB.0.1= Measured pin position 1 Format according to item LD. Copy the contents of one of the
elements from item 5D, whose ullage corresponds with pin
position 1, into this item (i.e. from 5D.0.1).
PB.1.1= Measured pin position 2 Format according to item LD. Copy the contents of one of the
elements from item 5D , whose ullage corresponds with pin
position 2, into this item (i.e. from 5D.1.1).
PB.2.1= Measured pin position 3 Format according to item LD. Copy the contents of one of the
elements from item 5D , whose ullage corresponds with pin
position 3, into this item (i.e. from 5D.2.1).
CS= Compensation switch This item has ten positions. When the fourth position is set on:
· R enables verification pin correction
· - disables the verification pin correction
Enable the verification pin correction by setting the fourth position
of item CS on ‘ R ‘.
EX Exit Exit protection level 2. With this command, also the pin
measuring mode is left.
If the product level of the tank is above pin position 1 and/or below pin position 3, then the correction is
extended by the following estimation:
· above pin 1: there is an interpolation from the radar zero point (no correction) to the position of pin 1 (with
its correction)
· below pin 3: the correction found at pin 3 is is valid for the range below pin position 3.

An example of given and measured verification pin positions is listed in the table above. From this data figure
3.2 can be made. Figure 3.2 includes the extrapolated corrections for the levels above pin 1 and below pin 3.
Figure 3.3 gives an example of a reflection diagram in verification pin measurement mode.
3.4 Rotate Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing in product measuring position
After the procedures have been followed in section 3.3, the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT
housing has to be orientated for (normal) product measurement.
Follow the same procedure as described in section 3.2, but now the 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973
SmartRadar LT housing is orientated in the original position.
Verifying the verification pin correction
Instruction manual SmartRadar Verification pin compensation Page 12
4 Verifying the verification pin correction
Once the procedures for the correction by means of verification pins as described in the previous sections are
performed, the correction can be verified.
1) Enter protection level 1;
2) Give command PP (verification pin measuring mode) to the SmartRadar;
3) The 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing is “rotated” into verification pin
measurement mode (refer to section 3.2);
4) Give command FC and wait for 5 seconds;
5) Read the measured and corrected pin positions in item 4Z (indexed item, read first three elements);
6) Compare these values with the physical pin positions, given in item PC (indexed item; read first three
elements);
7) “Rotate” 873 SmartRadar Antenna Unit / 973 SmartRadar LT housing into product measuring mode;
8) Give EX (exit) command to the SmartRadar.
The differences between the measured pin positions and the real pin positions should not exceed more than ±3
mm. This is only valid if vapour compensation is used. Else, the tolerated differences should be taken larger (i.e.
±10 mm).
