Tips for a Thinner ThanksgivingGaining weight during the

holiday season is a nationalpastime. Did you know that mostpeople gain at least a poundduring the holiday? Most keep theweight on permanently, too.

The good news is with a littleknowledge you can indulgeyourself in traditional holiday farewithout guilt.

Get Active: Eat less and exercisemore during the holidays toprevent weight gain. Boost thefrequency of your fitness routinethe weeks ahead of the feast. Takea walk early Thanksgiving Dayand then again after dinner.

Eat Breakfast: Eating a smallmeal in the morning may give youmore control over your hunger.Start your day with a healthybreakfast, preferably one with

protein and fiber, which may helptake the edge off your cravingsand allow you to be more sensibleduring the “big feast.”

Watch your Portions: Beforefilling up your plate, evaluate thebuffet table and decide whatyou’re going to choose. Don’tsquander your calories on foodsthat you can have all year long.Indulge with small portions ofholiday favorites so you can enjoyyour traditional favorites.

Best Bets on the Table: Whiteturkey meat, plain vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashedpotatoes and defatted gravy tend tobe lower in fat and calories.

Skip the Seconds andLeftovers: Try to resist thetemptation to go back for seconds. You are less likely to overeat andhave more room for a delectabledessert. But only one slice of thatpumpkin pie!!!

  • Thanks for theMemories

For some reason that even thedoctors couldn’t figure out, DonBodow went into a two-monthcoma about four years ago. The11-month rehab included gettingback the memory he had lost. Noone can explain how he recovered—he wasn’t supposed to. Donjokes, “It’s because I heard aboutBelmont Village Sabre Springs!!”

Don lived in Syracuse, N.Y.,where he owned a marketing/advertising agency. He and hisfamily came to SoCal in 1989,where he became a VP at UpperDeck Company (a new licenseefor sports trading cards). Donhandled everything from publicrelations to negotiating licenseswith the four major sports, as wellas signing superstars to becompany spokespeople. What ajob for a fan! Don got to spendtime with Mickey Mantle, TedWilliams, Joe Montana, and manyothers. And he got to throw outthe first pitches in a number ofbaseball stadiums like Fenway

    Park in Boston and YankeeStadium.

Don readily admits that he hasbeen gifted with a second life. Heand his business partner, YolandaArana, create activity programs forindependent/assisted livingresidents as well as for the Circleof Friends. He says he has never,in any of his endeavors, receivedsuch satisfaction as he does nowwith programs that stimulate andmake people happy.

Of course, Don is proudest ofbeing Michael’s father. “He’s agood, caring man. What morecould I ask?”

Don says, “A good life is allabout a positive attitude andlooking forward to tomorrow.” Heloves instilling that in as manypeople as he can. Don, thanks forthe memories!
