The First Sunday of Lent March 9, 2014

In the silence of your heart, listen to His Words Taizé (pronounced “teh-ZAY”) prayer is an ecumenical form of

prayer for Christians of all traditions. It is a unique experience, differ-ent from other liturgies. The church is lit by candles. The service is meditative and uses singing, scripture, and silence.

The music of Taizé prayer generally consists of short, repetitive songs that foster meditation. Using just a few words, these songs ex-press a basic reality of faith. As the words are sung over and over, this reality can penetrate the whole being. Meditative singing becomes a way of listening to God.

Prayer in the Taizé style of worship is quiet and reflective; it can be both peaceful and joyful, It allows everyone to take part in a time of expectant listening and silent, attentive waiting for God. This can draw us into an experience of God’s presence and love in our innermost be-ing.

The focus of Taizé is on Christ and the cross, reconciliation, prayers for the suffering throughout the world, and for peace in our hearts and among all people.

Join Fr. Bill Cao as he leads a multi-lingual Taizé Lenten Prayer Service on Tuesday, March 11, in the church. 6:30 p.m. gathering, 7 p.m. prayer, 8 p.m. fellowship and soup in O’Connor Hall.

At the 8 p.m. gathering in O’Connor Hall, Fr. Ven Amidar will be giving a presentation about the typhoon devastation in his home Diocese of Borongan, Eastern Samar, Philippines. He will be accept-ing donations and sending them to the Borongan Diocese.

Today’s Scripture First Reading -- The man and the woman ate the fruit of

the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7).

Psalm -- Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Ps 51). Second Reading -- Death reigned from Adam to Moses,

but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]).

Gospel -- Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11).

The Way Out Today's readings launch us into Lent with the story

of salvation. How did we humans get where we are? How do we get out? Genesis--through the Adam and Eve narrative--explains that we got separated from God and happiness through greed, selfishness, arrogance.

But, as Paul explained to the Romans, God has not abandoned us, and never will. We get out through the "new Adam," Jesus Christ, through whom the death of sin is conquered by the life of "overflowing grace."

From the start, though, Jesus--like Adam and Eve, like you and me--had to face "the tempter." Shown fame and wealth, he was tempted to grab for it. But Jesus saw through such foolishness. Treasures from our Tradition Today, we know more about the beginnings of

Lent than our ancestors did. We know that Lent is first of all about baptism, and secondly that it is about the desire of all the baptized to renew the power and poten-tial of that sacrament at Easter. For centuries, this deep truth was largely obscured, but today documents have come to light to reshape the Church's thinking and practice.

One source, discovered in the 1880s, is the pilgrim diary of a Spanish nun, Egeria, writing her sisters a detailed travelogue of a fourth-century sojourn in Jeru-salem during Holy Week. She describes in vivid detail her participation in liturgies that are close cousins of our own Holy Week prayer, from a festive procession with palms to a procession to the cross. Her greatest delight is in the huge number of elect: men, women, and children who experience a time of deep retreat and identification with Christ's cross, guided by the bishop and supported by their godparents' constant nurture. The discovery of Egeria's diary proved to be a moment of grace for the Church; after a long period of "ecclesial amnesia," we know at last that baptism is really the work of a whole community of faith, con-vened by God. --Rev. Altar Server Training March 22, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the church.

Altar Servers are adults, girls, and boys who assist the celebrant at the altar throughout the week during ceremonies such as the celebration of Masses, wed-dings, and funerals. teamed up with PBS Waste Solutions to host an e-waste fundraising event. Clear out all those old televisions, laptops, I Pads, desktops, printers, scanners, and PDA's that you no longer use. Please recycle your old cell phones to benefit stu-dents from our St Justin Martyr Youth Ministry who are going to the Steubenville, San Diego retreat in July. Money will be earned for each recycled phone whether working or not. Cell phones are recycled through “Reuse” and “Refining” programs. Hear a representative of Catholic Relief Services speak about his life experience in Ghana

Please come to the SJM Parish Hall on Tuesday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. to hear Thomas Awiapo of Catholic Relief Services in Ghana share his truly inspiring personal story of survival and success. Orphaned before the age of ten, Thomas survived bleak poverty and hunger in Africa. His search for food led him to school, where he won scholarships and later earned a Master’s degree. Thomas will share stories of how your participation in CRS Rice Bowl makes a real difference in the lives of the poor.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Dios tiene un plan para nosotros

Génesis 2:7-9 El verbo plantar expresa una acción de Dios. Dios planta un huerto para colocar al hombre en el. Ya entonces el énfasis esta puesto en el funcionamiento de las leyes naturales, donde Dios crea a partir de ellas, pero haciendo su propio plan. Tiene una intención explícita de colocar en el huerto al ser humano. En el huerto el hombre disfruta de lo que produce y el trabajo no es una carga tediosa ni amarga porque es el medio de crear las condiciones de vida que Dios le ha dado. Esta situa-ción es clave para entender el sentido del relato, porque es contradictoria con la ex-periencia de Israel, siempre sometido a imperios y obligado a trabajar para el bienes-tar de otros.

Romanos 5:12-19 Hay aquí una referencia al pecado original. La expresión griega no se traduce solo referido a Adán y se podría referir a los pecados personales de todos. Así, sin negar una influencia del pecado de la primera persona, puede enten-derse que ese pecado radical de la naturaleza herida se confirma por la actuación de la persona y el pecado personal. No es solo que la persona nace inclinada al pecado, sino que nace con necesidad de redención.

Mateo 4:1-11 Jesús fue llevado al desierto para ser tentado. El desierto es con fre-cuencia el lugar de la prueba. El relato establece un paralelismo entre Jesús y el pue-blo de Israel. El texto evoca claramente las experiencias vividas por Moisés y por el pueblo de Israel en el desierto. Jesús revive ahora unas pruebas comparables a las que el pueblo vivió durante la travesía del desierto, pero sin claudicar como lo había hecho Israel. Donde Israel había fracasado, Jesús sale triunfante. Antes de presentar-se en público, Jesús afronto la prueba de la soledad del desierto y tomo decisiones definitivas. Una opción posible era seguir el camino de la violencia y tratar de libe-rar a su pueblo mediante la rebelión contra los romanos. Otro camino era cautivar a la multitud con prodigios. Pero Jesús rechazo estas opciones e inicio su misión sin esas ataduras.

Nuestra cultura: Muchos de nosotros hemos tenido la experiencia del desierto; muchos del desierto físico que tuvieron que cruzar para llegar al Norte y la mayoría del desierto de la soledad, de la duda y de la tentación de abandonar, de dejar cosas y compromisos, de romper relaciones…

Reflexiones para la homilía

Había un plan precioso de felicidad eterna en el huerto donde Dios había colocado al ser humano. Además, era bien sencillo: el ser humano seria obe-diente a Dios y sabría bien cuál era su enorme digni-dad y belleza como creado a imagen y semejanza de Él. También sabría bien quien era Dios y quien era él y no pretendería cambiar los papeles. Lo demás seria todo abundancia y felicidad. Pero esos planes se trun-caron por la negativa del ser humano a hacer algo tan sencillo como mantener la recta relación con Dios. Cayó en la tentación de la mentira: de querer ser dios y no solo hijo. Allí no había soledad, ni hambre, ni nece-sidad. Y sin embargo, se desvía del plan. Al hacerlo, queda vacio en medio de toda aquella abundancia.

Cristo, el segundo Adán, no es colocado en un jardín precioso, sino en un desierto, pero con el mismo plan, aunque esta vez bastante más difícil. La tentación de mostrar poder, de no seguir el plan de salvación de Dios, de adorar a otros dioses se presenta, como se le presento a Adán. Pero Jesús la rechaza. Conoce bien su identidad de Hijo de Dios y conoce bien su misión. Ni la soledad, ni el hambre, ni la necesidad, le hacen desviarse de ese plan. Al hacerlo, llena de vida a todos, en medio de aquel desierto.

Para los cristianos, el camino está bastante claro: Dios tiene un plan, un sueno para nosotros. Y tal plan incluye felicidad, abundancia de vida, salvación. Pero siempre nos vamos a enfrentar a tentaciones: tener más y más y convertir a las cosas en nuestros dioses. Tener más poder que los demás y quizá demostrarlo pisándo-los o abusando de fuerza; demostrar valía. Y lo que eso consigue, por no estar en el plan de Dios, es alejar-nos cada vez más de nuestra propia imagen, sacarnos del jardín y hacernos entrar cada vez más en un desier-to de aridez y sequia.

Cristo entro en el desierto para que nosotros pu-diéramos entrar en el jardín. Jesús siguió el plan de Dios, incluso con todas sus dificultades, para que no-sotros también sepamos seguirlo. Para que de nuestros desiertos crezca la abundancia y la vida. Para que po-damos, como Jesús, sabernos hijos amados de Dios. El plan de Dios para nosotros incluye felicidad, abun-dancia de vida y salvación.

En el silencio de tu corazón, escucha sus Palabras

La oracion Taizé es una forma ecuménica de oración para los cristianos de todas las tradiciones. Es una experiencia única, diferente a otras litur-gias. La iglesia está encendida de velas. El servicio es meditativo y usa can-tos, las escrituras y el silencio.

La música de la oración Taizé generalmente consiste de cortas, repetiti-vos cantos que cultivan la meditación. Permite a todos de tomar parte de un tiempo expectante escuchando y en silencio, esperando atentamente a Dios. Esto nos puede atraer a una experiencia de la presencia de Dios y el amor en nuestro mas intimo ser.

El centro de atención del Taizé es en Cristo y la cruz, reconciliación, oraciones por el sufrimiento en todo el mundo, y por la paz en nuestros corazones y entre todas las personas.

Acompañe al P. Bill Cao en dirigir un Servicio Cuaresmal de Oración Taizé el martes, 11 de marzo, en la iglesia. Reunión en la iglesia a las 6:30 p.m., oración a las 7 p.m., compañerismo y sopa a las 8 p.m. en el salón parroquial O’Connor.

Un asunto de justicia El año pasado, cuando los consumidores llegaban a

las tiendas por todo el país, muchos de los trabajadores del sector privado más grande de empleados protestaban por sus salarios injustos. Dos semanas más tarde, los me-dios informaban sobre empleados de banco que apenas pueden sobrevivir con un salario mínimo mientras que los propietarios de los bancos estaban declarando ganancias multimillonarias.

El salario mínimo federal, que se estableció en 1938 bajo la Ley de Standars de Trabajo Justo, está en la actua-lidad en $7.25 la hora. En su discurso sobre el estado de la nación de 2013, el Presidente Obama pidió aumentar tal salario mínimo a $9.00 la hora, lo cual provoco que muchas personas en el Congreso y en el sector empresa-rial llamaran a tal aumento un “asesino de empleos” y citaran estudios que dicen que un salario mínimo más alto tendría poco impacto en la reducción de los niveles de pobreza del país. Lo más probable, sin embargo, es que quienes se oponen al aumento del salario mínimo no vi-van o apoyen a sus familias con salarios tan bajos, y pare-ce que ignoran los temas sobre si los trabajadores que ganan lo mínimo pueden o no afrontar las necesidades básicas de hogar, salud, comida, cuidado de niños y edu-cación con dignidad.

Según la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Esta-dos Unidos (USCCB), “millones de Americanos sufren los resultados de una economía que no produce los sufi-cientes trabajos que paguen un salario justo. Hay tres trabajadores desempleados buscando trabajo para cada empleo disponible. Así que la tasa de pobreza continúa siendo inaceptablemente alta y las familias luchan con el peso de precios más altos y salarios congelados o en baja. Muchas familias se encuentran sin cuentas bancarias o acceso a créditos…además del estrés y la ansiedad, una situación así crea peligros de abuso y explotación”.
