In order to learn chemistry we need to learn to talk chemistry.

Lots of words have vague meaning in “real life” but mean specific things in chemistry. Let’s see what is going on. The soon we can talk to each other, the more we will learn.

That’s Demetri Mendeleev, one of my chemistry heroes.

This is the man responsible for the creation of the original Periodic Table of the Elements.

Symbol, capital letters are very important!

Electron configuration, later again, but note: 2 + 8 + 1 = 11 works every time!

On back side of the Periodic Table is table S, which lists the names of the elements. Let’s go through them in order, note the funny sounding names. We’ll do the first 40 only.

H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Br, Kr, Rb, Sr, Y, and Zr.All have a capital letter symbol, or a capital letter with a small letter. NO elements have a single lower case, or two upper case letters.
