Presidents Report It was good to see so many Rotarians at the service to cele-brate the life of Roger “Roddy” Frewen last Wednesday after-noon. I am sure Shirley appreciated the support.
Our speaker last Thursday evening was our newest member Jan Cooper. She provided some real insights into the world of elite rowing and we had the opportunity to hold an Olympic Gold Medal awarded to her son Andrew at the Barcelona Games. Martin Fothergill provided an outline of our “Lightbulb Moment” initiative. Please remember to feed him possible contacts, it will be interesting to see where this initiative takes us.
I attended the quarterly District 9810 president’s meeting on Friday evening. The meeting had an ambitious and wide rang-ing agenda. Points of particular note were:
The District grants pool is $65K for 2017 – 18. It is already oversubscribed based on indications given by clubs in June. Our wish list was included.
The global grants pool for 9810 has $78K available.
District membership has increased and is currently 1,116.
There was a request for submissions from clubs for changes they want considered for presenting at the next council of leg-islation. If anyone has anything they want considered, I have the paperwork.
We have been asked to look again at collecting hours worked by Rotarians on Rotary projects. Previous methods of doing this were considered too onerous but District is developing some spreadsheet options that might make this feasible. When available I will try out and assess. Please be patient if I ask you for some input.
There was an update on child protection requirements includ-ing changes that came into force on 1st July (reportable con-duct) and 1st August (WWC changes). I have already circulat-ed a Justice Connect fact sheet to board members that covers both these areas. If you would like a copy please let me know.
Donations to the Rotary Foundation by District 9810 are declin-ing so the amount of money available for District grants will also decline in coming years. If you are not a Centurion mem-

ber please give it serious consideration. See John Manks for information.
The District Indigenous Committee provided an update on MITS (David Hone) and Trachoma 2020 (Keith Cham-berlain).
We have the Farmers Market this Saturday 12th August, now Heather is back we can expect good weather. The Cancer Council Daffodil Day (25th & 26th August) and Concourse Classic Car Show (10th September) are com-ing up soon at the Beaumaris Concourse. Please look out for the signup sheets and help where you can. These events are important for the visibility of the club in our local community and are also good fun.
The Art of Kakadu exhibition moved location over the weekend and is now at the facelifted Brighton Library. The month at Sandringham library produced some addi-tional sales, he have similar hopes for Brighton. I have asked both Sandringham and Hampton Rotary Clubs to include details in their newsletters.
Thirty three members have now replied to our member-ship survey, thank you. The results will be presented at our club night on 14th September. Please let me or any board member know of anything that you would like cov-ered that evening.
We still need a volunteer to look after our social media posts and additional volunteers for the AV role at our meetings. Many of the original AV people now have oth-er roles and the duty keeps falling on the same few, so this is becoming critical. If you can help please contact David Lea or myself.
Our meeting on Thursday will be at Victoria Golf Club. Our speaker is Bruce Corben from the Grace Heart Com-munity Church in Highett. A number of us heard Bruce speak earlier in the year at a community forum on home-lessness in Bayside promoted by Murray Thompson.

Bruce gives a realistic no nonsense assessment of the situation and what strategies will help in this area.
Have good week, I look forward to seeing you on Thurs-day.

MITS Gala Dinner
Thursday 19 October
Please save the date! On our annual fundraising event – the MITS Gala Dinner – will be held at Carousel on Albert Park Lake. Join our students for a delicious banquet feast by food&desire and entertainment by Yirrmal Marika – a new genera-tion artist from Yirrkala in North East Arnhem Land. Yirrmal is the grandson of Dr Yunupingu, former lead singer of Yothu Yindi. He is an inspir-ing songwriter and guitarist who performs with feeling and depth well beyond his years. He also undertook schooling away from home, so has walked the path our students are travelling. He wowed the crowds at the Port Fairy Festival this year and we know he’ll do the same at the Gala Dinner. Please join us if you can.
